May half term or September?

Of course, nobody can say for sure, but if you had to hedge your bets, based on what other countries are doing, do you think schools will be re-opening and the end of May or September?

I have always (total gut feeling) said 1 June for schools, but it may be on a rota system (there may be a limit on numbers allowed in each classroom). Private schools will have the advantage on this, because they have smaller numbers in classes.

But I now wonder know if from mid May Primary schools and nurseries will be allowed to open (some smaller schools being able to work out rota systems sooner) and then all schools from 1 June.
Again with limits of children in each room.

OneForMeToo · 15/04/2020 19:08

If they do only some years or some years some days mine won’t be going I’m not going to drag them all out for just one to be in school. I’m happy to have them home till September if I need too. I’d rather a September opening but if it is after half them then it needs to be all or nothing.

Itisasecret · 15/04/2020 19:10

I think 1 June after the half term and bank holidays. It will then give staff who have been teaching and in school since Feb half term a week off before summer term. I believe they should have a break before an 8 week, busy term 6.

BG2015 · 15/04/2020 19:11

Hoping for after May half term.I teach Y1 and desperately want to get back into school with my fab class.

wendz86 · 15/04/2020 19:13

June 1st I reckon .

CallmeAngelina · 15/04/2020 19:15

I've just had a (minor) spat with dh, as I'd read that there are calls for schools to open for May 11th. I was wondering out loud about the May half term being quite close to that and his view was that "of course" that would be cancelled, as it would be terrible "PR" for teachers!
I'm still cross with him!

JesmondDene · 15/04/2020 19:16

Peak in my county not expected until the end of May, early June - so we won't have the staff to open.
September.

EducatingArti · 15/04/2020 19:17

Also, I don't think we have passed the peak yet. I think we may be at the peak ( although I think there will be a big jump in numbers tomorrow as less recording and updating will have happened the bank holiday weekend) but we will spend some weeks ( at least two but probably more) at the peak before things really start to slow down.

www.google.com/amp/s/www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/school-opening-wales-coronavirus-education-18095062.amp

This article gives seems to say Welsh schools are not opening imminently and will only do so when CMO says it is safe and most likely a phased return.

Seems to have a different take on it from earlier article posted...........

Nanalisa60 · 15/04/2020 19:20

Monday 1st June

Random18 · 15/04/2020 19:21

why would the peak be different in different parts of the country if we all locked down at same time.

I can understand some small variations per region but I don't get home it would be so different.

Ilikefresias · 15/04/2020 19:21

I hope after half term, so June 1 but heard a lot today that says May 11 which I think is too soon

uhoh2020 · 15/04/2020 19:21

I'm hoping for June but prepared for September.

FlamingoAndJohn · 15/04/2020 19:22

Well i don't care what the rest of you's are doing, mine won't be going back before September. Summer term is bloody pointless at the best of times

So you have happy for them to miss meeting their new teacher? Miss all the new learning that should have already taken place? Sports day? Leavers services?
Ok then.

Underhisi · 15/04/2020 19:24

I think some children may be back in part time at least, before September but I think the beginning of June may be too soon.

FlamingoAndJohn · 15/04/2020 19:25

why would the peak be different in different parts of the country if we all locked down at same time.

Because some parts of the country, mainly a London, have much higher rates of infection.

CallmeAngelina · 15/04/2020 19:26

Sports Day? Leavers Service?

I highly doubt events like those will be happening.

uhoh2020 · 15/04/2020 19:29

If they do open them in June it will be because it's safe to do so, so why would you keep them off until September unless you plan on isolating throughout the summer too and never having any contact with the outside world

refraction · 15/04/2020 19:29

From TES live feed

16:14
We aren’t reopening schools in Wales, says minister
The Welsh education minister has said there are no plans to reopen schools in Wales before the end of the summer term.
Kirsty Williams added that when schools did reopen, social distancing measures meant that it still would not be “business as usual” in schools.
She said: "Schools in Wales will not open for statutory education next week, and a change to that is not imminent.
"It will only happen when the science and medical evidence say it is safe to do so."

Random18 · 15/04/2020 19:30

I would actually be more concerned for my child going back in September than June.

Essentially not mixing with other children for such a long time, not getting exposed to all the germs that actually does their immune system so much good.

Potentially less outside time during the summer holidays.

No real chance to build it back up again before we are in a 2nd wave of CV and flu too.

OK I know they can get the flu vaccine. Mine got it in December I think. So a fair few months to catch it 1st.

Random18 · 15/04/2020 19:31

Refraction what was the actual quote? Article in BBC also didn't mention September.

Even in the article you posted it was not quoted.

blue25 · 15/04/2020 19:32

June but half the staff and children won’t actually turn up!

namechangenumber2 · 15/04/2020 19:32

Ideally I'd like schools to reopen this side of the summer, to allow my yr 6 DS chance to have some sort of transition to secondary school

refraction · 15/04/2020 19:34

Refraction what was the actual quote? Article in BBC also didn't mention September.

I don't know I think it was said at different times and some were responses to questions. I keep trying to find a recording of the media briefing to tell what was actually said.

Did anyone in Wales see it?
