Numbers have not increased today?

Rosalie49 · 15/04/2020 16:57

I was expecting a massive increase in total deaths today. I thought we were still lagging behind from the weekend still and that today we were going to have a total jump in figures but no?

I’m really happy, of course! This is amazing news and I hope it stays this way. I’ve always been very optimistic anyway but this really had got my hopes up.

Is this a good sign? Number of cases has decreased too but they were flattening anyway.

I was also expecting that increase, but I think it might arrive tomorrow instead. Fingers crossed though that the increase just doesn't happen 🤞

iVampire · 15/04/2020 17:02

There have been hopes for some time that London might peak this week, other regions following over the next couple of weeks

Fingers crossed

Rosalie49 · 15/04/2020 17:32

Well, Prof Chris Whitty has announced that we are approaching the peak I believe. He also mentioned that we could potentially see a large increase in deaths tomorrow. He said there is a two day delay so we’ll see what happens tomorrowSad

They'll likely be a frightening jump tomorrow and Friday as the reporting has lagged so much over the weekend. I'm mentally preparing for an in excess of 1000 day.

Shmithecat2 · 15/04/2020 18:18

Whilst the number of deaths rising is awful, of course, it's not really the marker now. Infection rates are the important figure.

AnneLovesGilbert · 15/04/2020 18:19

The weekend lasted until Monday. Whitty says it’ll get worse.

MigGril · 15/04/2020 18:25

Infection rates have no bearing at all, that only shows how much testing it's being done. In some respects so does death rates as it depends on how they have been recorded ie have those who died in cafe homes been taken into account. But it's more accurate then infection rates.

Shmithecat2 · 15/04/2020 18:36

But death rates are, for want of a better word, pointless and indicate nothing other than the number of deaths 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ciwirocks · 15/04/2020 18:43

The update today shows that hospital admissions are starting to level out and they believe that we are approaching the peak, they expect the peak to occur at the same time throughout the country as we all locked down at the same time. The levelling and decreasing death rate should follow.

turnthebiglightoff · 15/04/2020 19:07

Probably wouldn't be "really happy" that over 700 people died in one day, OP. Not the best choice of words. Biscuit

DaphneFanshaw · 15/04/2020 19:09

Don't worry op, I knew what you meant.
Do did most other people I suspect.

turnthebiglightoff · 15/04/2020 19:10

I knew what she meant too; that doesn't mean it wasn't an incredibly poor choice of words!!

PickAChew · 15/04/2020 19:11

It's all relative, isn't it? It's fine to be happy that a few hundred people less than expected are known to have died.

There's a Nightingale hospital been set up in the NE and it's been said that it may not actually need to come into service.

SteeperThanHell · 15/04/2020 19:11

You're really happy and optimistic - not sure I see much to celebrate.

DryHeave · 15/04/2020 19:13

Whitty said because it was a 4 day weekend we could realistically expect reported deaths to increase tomorrow & Friday.

Sennetti · 15/04/2020 19:13

Frances death rate numbers for today.......wow!

ACertainSupermarket · 15/04/2020 19:21

Deaths are the important figure to me. After all, if you don't die you recover. In any case, we really have no idea how many are or have been infected as the testing has been so patchy. The infection figures are only a % of those tested, and that is going to be certain sectors not a general population.
Even if they are slowing down, it's going to be a slow ride.

FreddieFlintstone · 15/04/2020 19:23

I heard they were doing an average of 10,000 tests per day. It sounds like a lot but it's nowhere near as many as other countries. I'm sceptical about all the numbers - the number of cases has stayed roughly the same because of a lack of testing, so why do we assume that this would not impact on the number of deaths caused by covid? Also, I've heard that not all residential/nursing homes have testing kits for residents. I would be curious to know how wide spread it is in nursing homes and how many deaths passed of as "natural causes" are covid.

Ciwirocks · 15/04/2020 19:25

Hospital admissions are accurate though and are a good indicator that the number of people infected is stabilising. I agree the testing needs to be much better to be able to use that as an indicator

Itisasecret · 15/04/2020 19:27

France is actually less than ours, their figure included nearly 1k deaths from care homes, hospital deaths are only ‘500’ ish.

Rosalie49 · 15/04/2020 19:28

Oh fgs there’s always someone isn’t there. Obviously I’m not “happy” that over 700 people have died today, its devastating and by the way - I’ve nearly lost someone in the family due to covid-19 so definitely not what I meant. I’m glad most people understood. @SteeperThanHell are you actually for real? I’m not celebrating at all - you’re putting words in my mouth. Apologies for trying to be an optimistic and looking for the positives in these horrible, miserable days. We’ve got to have a little hope for everyone and everything!

@DryHeave yes, I heard. We’ll have to wait and see for tomorrow’s figures but by the sounds of it, it’s going to be frightening as there really has been a lag this week.

Anecdotally, my friend's who are nurses, paramedics etc have all said that they feel a bit more in control of the situation now, that they can see a glimmer of hope.
I lost a family member to this, it's been horrible. We couldn't go to the funeral, although it was live streamed.
I will be happy when the death rate slows because less people will be going through the hell that my family and over 12,000 families have gone through.

Derbygerbil · 15/04/2020 19:34

It’s good when numbers don’t rise as much as expected, and might be an indicator that things aren’t quite as bad as feared. But some people read too much into them... They’ve generally had their fingers burnt. I am expecting a nasty rise tomorrow, but hopeful it won’t be. If Chris Whitty suggested there would be (when was that?) that’s a bad sign.

Derbygerbil · 15/04/2020 19:35
