Why aren't we disinfecting our streets?

Like in China, Iran and other countries affected by the virus

I've seen lots of footage of the streets, buildings, cars, doorways, shops, roads etc - being sprayed and disinfected

Why isn't the UK doing any of this?

thats why we are in lockdown.....you wouldn't be sitting on public benches and surely its your own responsibility to ensure your kid doesn't lick anything if you have to take him out

I wouldn't be surprised if we see this soon enough. The Chinese knew plenty they didn't tell us and many of the "crazier" things we saw from China have now happened in the west (clinical staff having nervous breakdowns, people dropping dead in the street). Perhaps we'll find out soon that transmission cannot be acceptably reduced without street disinfecting. Who knows.🤷‍♀️

I’ve mostly wondered if our hospitals are going to step up their cleaning regime. I’ve spent many a night in my local children’s ward with my toddler and I have seen how the wards cleaning staff lack enthusiasm regarding cleaning. I’m sorry but they really do .

Good lord no, it’s bad enough when the council zap everything with weed killer.

I think it's a fair question OP. Dubai do this and, like you, I simply wondered why others do and we don't.

No, I just let him do it Hmm

I mentioned that that in response to somebody implying people licking lamp posts is the reason something like street disinfecting would happen.

Because the need and the
effectiveness hasn't been established. Better to target our efforts on goals that have been proven to work.

some of these chemicals that are used are harmful especially if inhaled or gotten in the eyes or the water courses - years ago in the 60's when people arrived by plane in Australia they use to spray them in the plane with ddt (I kid you not!) Also a lot of this spray would get washed off or diluted by rain - I think sometimes its more about (as pp said) being seen to do something - & to be frank aerosol sprays in the open air are more likely to miss than hit what they are being sprayed at -

I have also wondered why we aren't disinfecting our streets and public places. In countries where they do it, they seem to be on top of their crisis much quicker, they don't just disinfect streets but also shopping centres, trains, public transport etc.

I know there is no hard evidence of effectiveness - just as there is debate over wearing masks - but to my mind the extra precautions can't harm and may well do some good. Some of our towns are particularly filthy anyway, some disinfectant spray on an industrial scale is probably needed even without a virus....!

@wanderingmilly....which countries are those?

It would cause a false sense of reassurance. People would touch things and then touch their face or not wash their hands when they return home and the disinfecting is only in place until the area is reinfected by the next Unknownly infected person shedding the virus.

They should absolutely do it for outdoor playgrounds. Children lick those all the time Smile
