Lockdown - was I in the wrong?

JigsawGirl11 · 11/04/2020 16:19

So today me and DH went out for a bike ride (I will admit straight away that we didn't ride at all before lockdown and bought bikes so we can take advantage of the daily exercise a little better)

We took a bottle of water and a little packet of 6 mini sausage rolls we had in the fridge. After around 45 mins we sat down at a bench had a drink and ate the sausage rolls, police drove past once, went about 200 yards to the next roundabout and came back and told us off.

The policeman was pretty polite and apologetic, he said that we need to move on as if his Sargent saw he would fine us on the spot.

Obviously we moved on, there's no point trying to push the boundaries and I know health and the general stay at home advice is important. Personally I am a bit put out by such an infringement of what's usually a basic human right and the common sense that it we didn't have sausage rolls we prob would have been able to have a break/drink of water whilst on the bike ride.

I hope no-one is going to jump on about scold me like a child, obviously I thought what we did was okay or we wouldn't have done it but I'm interested to hear other people's opinions.

Elderly or less mobile people can exercise at home. Joe Wicks has a simple 10 minute work out for seniors which is very good.

HopelessLayout · 11/04/2020 18:33

What is frustrating about this is that I think our government have not been prescriptive about exercise because they see us as adults who can use common sense.

… And they used the word "minimise" to quantify the time that should be spent outside one's own home. That seems to have completely flummoxed a large number of people.

Choice4567 · 11/04/2020 18:34

You being berated @JigsawGirl11 because this is exactly the kind of thing that’s annoying everyone, and you haven’t explained or answered- why did you think it was ok? Which part of going for exercise did you think this came under?

Amymayapple · 11/04/2020 18:35

Did everyone miss where the OP says that she is pregant?

This is absolutely unbelievable. I can't believe that they are expecting to people to go out and exercise, but they are not able to stop at all for a snack or a break. What if someone is diabetic? What about other pregnant ladies like the OP.

It is horrendous. A total infeingement on human rights

FOTTFSOFTFOASM · 11/04/2020 18:38

@inmylifeIlovedthemall Why cant you just stay at home as requested, or go for a walk like other people

A bit off topic, but I can't walk. However, I can cycle. So that's why I don't walk "like other people".

Just saying.

OP, there is a lot of nastiness on here at the moment. Unfortunately it's being directed at you on this thread.

I'm also sick of people saying "stay the fuck at home". It doesn't make the message any more or less compelling if you stick "the fuck" in it. It just makes you sound a bit unpleasant.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 11/04/2020 18:41

It is horrendous. A total infeingement on human rights

Oh it is. However, I reckon if op catches COVID19 from her little bench picnic then I doubt she'll be relieved that she at least got to exercise her human rights in the process.

FlaskMaster · 11/04/2020 18:41

Jesus fucking Christ. Don't go to the park, don't sit on the bench, only be outside in public for ESSENTIAL shit.
Here are some FAQs on this:
"Does this even apply to me?" YES
"But can't I just sit on the bench briefly?" NO
"What if we have/don't have sausage rolls" NOBODY GIVES A FUCK ABOUT YOUR SAUSAGE ROLLS. STAY THE FUCK AT HOME.
Hth.

timetest · 11/04/2020 18:42

As the rules stand, you were wrong.

HairyDog · 11/04/2020 18:42

What I find odd is you had to stop after 45 mins cycling for food 😂

Most cyclists do not need to do this. Its exercise not a day out.

If you cannot manage then perhaps you need to do 25 min cycle one way then 25 min home then have a picnic at home.

Amymayapple · 11/04/2020 18:43

@Hearhoovesthinkzebras she is fucking pregnant! She needs a rest, when she needs a rest!

SarahInAccounts · 11/04/2020 18:43

They were overly officious. Of course you can sit down for a rest while exercising. It was sausage rolls not a Fortnum and Mason Hamper FFS.

Amymayapple · 11/04/2020 18:43

@HairyDog again, did you miss that she is pregnant?

What is going on, on this thread

breakingbetter · 11/04/2020 18:45

So you couldn't wait 15 minutes until you got home for a snack? Given that you have 60 minutes a day for exercise, you were obviously heading home at this point.

meditrina · 11/04/2020 18:45

Human rights can be legally suspended in the face of a pandemic and that it what the Act is all about.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 11/04/2020 18:45

Did everyone miss where the OP says that she is pregant?

Oh youre right! Covid deliberately doesnt infect pregnant women nor can they pass it on - covid is very considerate like that isn't it?

IDGAF if she's pregnant- the law applies to her just as much as it applies to non pregnant people and yes, I have been pregnant myself so I do realise what its like.
Covid doesnt care about pregnancy- OP can pass it on to someone more vulnerable and we dont know what the effects really are long term for pregnant women. It was a dumb thing to do.

Amymayapple · 11/04/2020 18:46

@AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter I think if a pregnant woman needs to sit down, she needs to sit down. That is a basic human right.

breakingbetter · 11/04/2020 18:47

You'd think with OP being pregnant, she'd be even more vigilant about the rules. Being pregnant isn't an excuse at the best of times, it definitely isn't for this scenario.

If she 'needs to rest when she needs to rest' then she should have stayed at home or had a shorter cycle or walk.

Amymayapple · 11/04/2020 18:48

It sounds all the more awful to me because I am in Ireland and we are allowed to sit on benches.

You all have been brainwashed into accepting this level of control, that is not being done everywhere

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 11/04/2020 18:48

If she cant go far without sitting down then she should:

  1. reduce the amount of time she's out
  2. stay closer to home.

Really, really not difficult to do!

PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock · 11/04/2020 18:48

Essential shit like... exercising maybe? Needing a break doesn't suddenly change out for exercising into non essential travel.

And while it doesn't apply to OP, some people (with certain conditions) are actually allowed out even more than once a day, they can even travel there.

The government are not speaking in absolutes. The law definitely doesn't. Not even the guidelines as they may be. So why do so many posters take it upon themselves to decide what the law is in such absolute terms? And then use that to attack and abuse others.

Choice4567 · 11/04/2020 18:48

@Amymayapple but planning a snack to take with her because she knew she wouldn’t be able to exercise that long is an odd plan in current circumstances. If OP knows she can only manage a 20 minute walk before needing a sit down and snack then a 20 minute walk and back home again is all she should have done

MamaBearLockdown · 11/04/2020 18:48

I love MN and the fact that eating sausage rolls is a human right.
Classic.

Shitsgettingcrazy · 11/04/2020 18:49

This is absolutely unbelievable. I can't believe that they are expecting to people to go out and exercise, but they are not able to stop at all for a snack or a break. What if someone is diabetic? What about other pregnant ladies like the OP.*

Op knew she had done this sort of exercise before.

Op also knew she couldnt go more than 30 mins. I would hope a diabetic in the same situation would think twice about what they were doing, if they knew it would involved a new exercise, for quite a long period and stopping off to eat.

A diabetic purposely putting themselves in that situation, during a pandemic, would be acting unreasonably as well. What if they ended up needing an ambulance.

Amymayapple · 11/04/2020 18:49

@breakingbetter wow, just wow. Really I am astounded.

She is allowed to go out for exercise, if she feels sick from morning sickness, then she is allowed to sit down for a few minutes.

nether · 11/04/2020 18:49

"Did everyone miss where the OP says that she is pregant?"

Pregnant women should
a) refrain from taking up new forms of exercise
b) recognise that they are vulnerable themselves
c) refrain from touching (including by sitting on) potentially contaminated surfaces such as communal benches, but also

d) keep it it proportion - there is no evidence of CV being teatrogenic, but not many babies have yet been born to mothers who cause it in the earlier stages of pregnancy (simply becuase the disease has nit been around for that long). But the best guess is that it will be no more danfpgerous than any other fever profpducing infection
