Probably an odd question to ask, but I think my odds are slightly in my favour to survive it.
Just wondering whether a lot of you actually fear death from it or not?
I'm aware obviously that it seems somewhat indiscriminate in who it takes out in some exceptional cases.
I've survived something similar, but I hope I'm healthy enough to beat it. If it's my time to go, then so be, we choose not the day nor the hour...
What do you think your odds are?
For reference I'm 39 and a smoker Blush

I think I would likely survive it. The only negative factors are BMI of 39 and psoriasis, which I guess could cause a cytokine storm. But I have no health conditions I am aware of apart from psoriasis, rarely get colds, have never had a chest infection. I'm 37. But who knows...

Pleasedontdothat · 11/04/2020 14:13

@milkcartoncat but a death rate of 10% for T1 diabetics mean 90% survive - why assume you’d be in the 10% rather than the 90%?

Ninkanink · 11/04/2020 14:15

Stats aren’t such a comfort when one in ten people will die.

whoami24 · 11/04/2020 14:18

Not sure, wasn't worried about catching it but am now terrified. I'm nearly 50, about 3 stone overweight, high cholesterol. In the last 18 months not looked after myself due to losing both parents, ate junk put on the weight. Used to be able to run 10k.

Was quite ill in February but I don't think it was corna virus, a cough but was flemmy, no high temperature but knocked me out fatigue wise for about 3 weeks. But DP slept in same bed and didn't catch it so don't think it was the dreaded virus.

ladypete · 11/04/2020 14:26

I think the odds are in my favour.
Under 30, non smoker, B+ blood group, very active lifestyle and good fitness levels.

But I’m also BAME and had a bad chest infection earlier this year, so I don’t know if my lungs are fully back to their peak condition yet?

You never know. I saw a video of a 28 year old athlete who came down with it and she went from doing 10Ks one week to struggling to talk the next.

HoobleDooble · 11/04/2020 14:26

I'm genuinely scared, I'm late 40s, unfit and obese. Whenever I get a cold it goes straight to my chest (always has since having whooping cough as a child). I don't rate my chances but, as a key worker and the wife of another key worker, the chances are one of us is going to get it.

Barbararara · 11/04/2020 14:27

@Pulpfiction1 thank you

Ifonlywecouldwishuponastar · 11/04/2020 14:29

I've survived quite a few major surgeries in life but I don't think I'd survive this.

BentNeckLady · 11/04/2020 14:32

I’m sure I’d be fine, and if I’m not I won’t be here to post otherwise.

There

SlimGin · 11/04/2020 14:37

I feel confident I would but who knows. I'm 27, relatively fit, strong immune system as far as I'm aware (fight off illnesses quickly and don't suffer from them badly).
The one thing concerning me is I have an undiagnosed joint issue at the moment which I was meant to have a specialist appt for last week (cancelled), so not sure if that would make a difference to my chances or not.

milkcartoncat · 11/04/2020 14:51

1 in 10 is quite high.
I’m mid 30s and I’m not usually more ill with anything than anyone else - but the stats show the truth.
Only 0.8% of those dying don’t have a previous underlying condition. If you are healthy your risk is very small. I’m not saying it would be fun, but it’s very small.
Diabetes is one of the highest death rates because this virus can attack the pancreas and kidneys as well as the lungs.
We all have to die of something.

Makinganewthinghappen · 11/04/2020 14:52

I don’t know - I am 36, non smoker generally healthy. But I am obese (bmi is 38) I am currently losing weight and have lost 20 pounds so far but I have a long way to go.
After seeing how much more serious it is with obesity I am finding it he’s not to think I am “certain” to die .

aWeaponCalledtheWord · 11/04/2020 14:53

nope.

i’m immunosuppressed and shielding, so there’s that.

but. if i were to get it and require ventilation i would die. i have a massive substernal thyroid goitre and my trachea is all squished over and bent into a curve. they tried to take
my thyroid out in january and couldn’t keep
me oxygenated under intubation, and abandoned the surgery.

it will almost certainly need to be re-done by splitting my sternum as all sorts of things are tangled up in my neck.

so with my risk factors and this exciting new physical malformation i’m pretty much fucked.

what larks!

Randomschoolworker19 · 11/04/2020 15:27

It depends really.

I'm 29, don't smoke, don't drink, healthy BMI, no underlying health conditions and I've always taken Vit D suppliments in winter.

From that prospective I should be okay.

However, I do work at a school with the children of NHS workers so if I do get the virus I suspect it will be a higher than average viral load which is worrying.

janeskettle · 11/04/2020 15:32

I have moderately severe lung disease, so getting it would likely not be a walk in the park for me.

I'm concerned about long term lung damage, and how that would progress my underlying disease, as well as death.

I neither feel I would die or not die, because that's unknowable and depends on factors outside my control. I'm unlikely to, even with increased risk, but it's possible.

ViciousJackdaw · 11/04/2020 15:39

Can't say I'm particularly concerned about dying. Dying is easy, you just lie there. It's living that's the hard part at the moment.

Puddlesplasher · 11/04/2020 15:49

I've had a terrible sense of foreboding about this ever since we first had reports from China. I have a strong feeling that if I get it I won't survive. I've emailed DH a list of all our insurance policies (DH doesn't have a clue what we have) as well as a list of who to notify if I die. My additional risk factors are:
Obesity
High blood pressure.
Asthma
Have previously been hospitalised with pneumonia.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 11/04/2020 16:43

I do think I'd survive it, I'm early 40s but have diabetes so who knows. I'm not going to worry about it or get paranoid. If it happens it happens. Not gonna live my life in fear.

FairfaxHigh · 11/04/2020 17:31

I'm fairly confident:
in my 30s (just)
healthy BMI (just)
Non smoker
No known health issues
Female
O+blood group
Never been really ill with anything chest related/rarely ill at all in fact
so I think the odds are probably in my favour. As others have said though there is always that random element. I'm taking sensible steps to reduce risk of getting it and more importantly to avoid spreading it to someone who may be more vulnerable.

SpeedofaSloth · 11/04/2020 17:33

Yes.

pucelleauxblanchesmains · 11/04/2020 19:33

I hope so - early 20s, not overweight, no immune or respiratory problems, but I have very bad health anxiety after a cancer scare a couple of years ago so I've been worrying a lot about it.

pucelleauxblanchesmains · 11/04/2020 19:38

I don't know what my blood group is though except my mother's is AB so I think it can't be O?

Newgirls · 11/04/2020 19:40

I know about 7-8 people who’ve had it locally and all ok now so that reassures me

I’m more worried about kids and husband - he has asthma

AnyFucker · 11/04/2020 19:40

It's just a matter of time for me

I am NHS, working in critical care. I expect my viral load is high. I should fall into the low risk group so I almost wish it would hurry up and show itself so I can get it over with.

Glaceon · 11/04/2020 19:48

Yes. The only concern with me is my smoking really. Which I am trying to cut back.

My partner has blood clots which worries me.

My step mum I'm certain wouldnt survive it and I'm fully expecting not to see her or my mum until a vaccine is available.
