Why are people covidiots? What’s the psychology?

I’m struggling to understand how families can watch the news, scroll Facebookand so on and not fail to see, over and over again, ‘stay home, save lives, protect the NHS.’

Really, what are they actually thinking? What goes on in their minds?

I am really worried even about my daily short walk or having to go to the supermarket. But I’m risk averse.

I wonder if there should be a new strategy to appeal to people who are more gung-ho and on the opposite end of the risk taking spectrum from me?

Cary, I know this controversial but my dad would say it’s lives vs lives. We’re cutting back on treatment that we know helps people, to prioritise a disease we can’t control.

He’s have volunteered at the Nightingale at over 80 but he was always more realistic about death. It’s lives vs lives here.

And it’s a pandemic. One of mum’s friends has already been turned away, and died at home. But that’s the way it is. There is a strange lack of acceptance about this.

My main concern is if we have enough sedation but all dad’s friends are retired so no one knows. I’m not There are mostly a bit “fuck it, I’m x age, I’ve got a DNR, I’m going to do as I please”.

I’d imagine even if a partner calls for an ambulance, years of having a doctor in the house would mean they’d make the call but say “this person has a DNR”.

I don’t care what my bloody doctor says about my age, after this I’m getting a DNR. Luckily I live alone so no one will call the ambulance for me.

Re masks, Dad would say bepanthol as barrier, then when off shift, sudocreme and keep it in, even it looks bonkers! It helps with red rawness.

No one has ever mentioned sedative drugs at the press conference I think? Or the general cocktail you give to the dying? We must have enough of that.

“ She did reference the petition to the government to revoke the Coronavirus bill that disappeared”

I’d be interested to hear more about this. I’m not an anti vaxxer, just concerned about the lack of free speech going on.

@LilacTree1
Yes, you make very valid points.
Food for thought. Thank you.
And she's using sudocreme.
And I've already decided that I want a DNR. I've had my time in critical care, and although I have much to live for, I understand this too.

My experience has been that younger people don’t see themselves as being at risk, because in the early days we were told it doesn’t kill younger people and you’re likely to get the virus anyway with mild symptoms. It takes a lot to change behaviour once the seed has been planted.

The older people I know have either been diligently following the rules, or have decided to take a risk as they would rather live the rest of their lives without disruption and aren’t frightened of dying after having a good life.

I can’t believe the London hatred. Tubes were busy because employers expected you to go to work. Not that many people have second homes to go to, most people are staying put and following the rules in my area. I truly hope it turns out not to be as bad in the areas outside of London.

I think the press have largely fuelled the London hatred tbh. Pictures of parks full of people while highlighting that they're further along the trajectory than the rest of the U.K. makes it look to some (who are hard of thinking) that it's a case of cause and effect. Ie people in London are going out loads therefore they have higher numbers than the rest of us. It's irresponsible reporting combined with stupidity and a lack of critical thinking.

LilacTree1 · 10/04/2020 20:40

I didn’t know there was london hatred 😳

Playmistyforme66 · 10/04/2020 20:49

Emotional coercion from family, begging crying down the phone at you to just come and see them. Just to stand in the garden so they can see and chat to you. Threats of self harm if you don't go.

OutComeTheWolves · 10/04/2020 20:49

@lilactree sorry I worded that badly. It's not hatred, but where I live there's definitely a feeling that it's London's problem rather than the understanding that they're just a bit ahead of us in terms of the virus's journey. So many people feeling that a )London have far more cases and b) they weren't observing social distancing so they should just be on lockdown rather than the whole U.K. I don't agree with it but I find myself arguing with those opinions a lot.

LilacTree1 · 10/04/2020 21:11

Out oh I see. I guess it must be weird, I can’t imagine the luxury of space so I look at pictures of London parks and think, that looks fine. Certainly my local park is fine.

I don’t think London should be on lockdown either. Back to lives vs lives.
