Morrisons - 3 tins in TOTAL!

Morereasonsnot · 09/04/2020 10:04

Went to Morrisons yesterday and at checkout was told I am only allowed 3 tins in total- NOT e.g. 3 tins chopped tomatoes + 3 tins beans. 3 tins in total will cover 1-2 meals max for my family who are all vegetarians. How absurd.

Has anyone experienced the same?

Sainsburys it’s 3 of any 1 item, but the scan and bag machine lets you scan as many of a single item as you want - they only had small tins of chickpeas and we use a lot as Dd is veggie and I could scan 4

jojobar · 09/04/2020 10:33

This is crazy!

We're not veggie but I regularly buy 4-5 tinned items a week, a couple of tins of tomatoes, tuna, kidney beans etc (would normally buy at least 3 tins of baked beans a week alone although not been able to buy any of those for the last 3 weeks!).

MrsWhites · 09/04/2020 10:34

This was also the policy in our local Morrison’s, which I’d queued outside for 55 minutes to get inside. It’s a ridiculous rule! I was also refused 4 individual pork steaks but confirmed that I could have purchased 3 multi packs of the same steaks!

NopeNotToday5 · 09/04/2020 10:35

I had this last week. I could have a pack of 4 tins of tomatoes then two separate tins of peas and no more.

Weedsnseeds1 · 09/04/2020 10:35

Brakes ( the wholesaler) have now opened on line shopping for some areas. Worth a look to see if you can use them in your area as it's all catering size packs, so case of tomatoes etc. not just one tin.

Babyroobs · 09/04/2020 10:36

It's crazy isn't it. People say we should be shopping every two weeks but they will only sell maximum of 2 dairy items or bread etc. I have 4 teenagers including 3 boys. One loaf of bread is gone for one lunch. I have been trying for weeks to get a click and collect or online delivery. Plus shopping for elderly dad.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 09/04/2020 10:45

Maybe ask them to explain via Twitter.

VeganCow · 09/04/2020 10:50

Sainsburys have lifted the restriction as of yesterday, it came over the speaker. I do self scan and never noticed the restriction before that, throughout this its allowed me to buy my normal x6 soya milks and multiple tins as I usually do, maybe self scan is different?

MereDintofPandiculation · 09/04/2020 11:01

I suppose you can get dried lentils in a bag but no alternative for beans and chopped tomatoes I think Dried beans in packets, need soaking and long cooking but doable, puy lentils in microwave packs, passata in cartons. No idea as to stock levels, but these were all in my normal Morrisons shopping.

MereDintofPandiculation · 09/04/2020 11:02

babyroobs see if any of your local bakery shops will deliver. Ours is doing a "bread box" and a "baking box". Or sometimes milkman will deliver bread.

ineedaholidaynow · 09/04/2020 11:04

I haven’t been able to buy tinned tomatoes for about 2 weeks in our local supermarket

AnnPerkins · 09/04/2020 11:08

Yes I had the same a couple of weeks ago. I got them for the foodbank and I was only allowed 3. Then it transpired that they had had to remove the foodbank collection because people had been stealing from it (Sad) so I ended up having to keep them for myself anyway.

ilovecakeandwine · 09/04/2020 11:10

That is ridiculous if you shop for a family of 4 like I do I get baked beans , kidney beans, and 2 tins of tomato's to make meals every week so you'd need to shop more . It should be 3 of each as it is in most shops .

cologne4711 · 09/04/2020 11:12

Will they let you buy the packets of dried beans/lentils etc? I know you then have to soak things overnight but there may not be limits on the numbers. I think I would prefer the soaking to having to go to Aldi, but up to you :)

What is wrong with these supermarkets? Firstly we have Sainsburys saying you can't have carrots AND parsnips and now Morrisons saying you can only have 3 tins. Total lack of common sense at the HQ end.

I'd take it further too.

Apolloanddaphne · 09/04/2020 11:13

You can buy multi packs. I bought 3 pack of custard, a multi pack of tuna and a 4 pack of tinned tomatoes and it went though fine. I agree it is mad though.

BiBiBirdie · 09/04/2020 11:14

I think that might just be your Morrisons

I think sadly that some supermarkets, shops and police forces are making the rules up from the very sketchy government guidelines as they go along. It's like our local Aldi is one in one out, I get the idea but they're huge stores so it's entirely unnecessary and has meant two to three hour long queues. I've not even bothered because I'd end up forgetting half what I went for thinking people would be pissed off having to wait for me to finish.

SultanasofPing · 09/04/2020 11:17

Had the same in Morrisons - bizarre rule - luckily there's a Tesco a little further so I've swapped to shop there

cologne4711 · 09/04/2020 11:22

I just told my husband about this and he said "oh it's a new desert island disks type game - what three tins would you choose?)

Me: sweetcorn, coconut milk and tinned peaches

Him: tuna, baked beans and chicken soup

Anyway it seems like Morrisons don't understand their own policy and their tills have been wrongly programmed: www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/2020/03/coronavirus-help-and-support/?utm_content=1586426517&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook,twitter#events-5

randomsabreuse · 09/04/2020 11:29

Also can't have more that 3 long life milk, including Oat Milk, which is awkward when you have got a dairy free toddler! They had about 400 of the things in the shop - massive pallet waist high!

Trying to minimise shopping trips but going to have to go to a big supermarket just for a barista oat milk. Will obviously buy a few extras of other stuff but it is only necessary because of outdated restrictions!

PineappleDanish · 09/04/2020 11:31

I want to take this further as their policy is not right

They can set whatever policy they want though. Yes it seems ridiculous but if that's the rule they have set at head office level - and their tills won't physically scan any more - then that's the rule. Shop elsewhere if you don't like it.

SpillTheTea · 09/04/2020 11:32

The cashier must have made a mistake.

MrsWhites · 09/04/2020 11:32

Looking at the link above, maybe they have changed their policy in the last day or so. I hope so as I’ll be going again this Saturday!

Love the desert island discs idea...I’d get custard, chicken and mushroom soup and probably more custard!

Danceswithwarthogs · 09/04/2020 11:34

Desert island tins.... We sometimes have tinned haggis which looks like dog food but makes a kind of instant cottage pie with mash on top

Danceswithwarthogs · 09/04/2020 11:34

And the condensed milk caramel

Danceswithwarthogs · 09/04/2020 11:36

(There might be bananas on the desert island so you could make banoffee pie)
