Well it's real now. DS's school (in the US) cancelled until September.

Got the email this morning. I'm in the States. Feel sad, ds has had health issues so had only done 4 months of kindergarten since September.

5 more months of homeschooling. Good grief.

I haven't told him yet, he's going to be upset, he's so lonely. What strange times we're living in.

Anyone else had school cancelled for the rest of the year?

I'm in Melbourne and ours are closed until start of term 3 which is mid July.

Remember you would have had a long summer holiday so it's not really 5 months of home schooling. I know it must be hard but try and think of it as time to things you wouldn't normally be able to do. He'll catch up on his schooling. He's got a long time of school ahead of him.

Why do you have to homeschooling for 5 more months??

Don't the US schools break up for summer at the end of May...so you have 2 months max.

What do you normally do with your kids for the other 3 months??

He's missed so much school already I feel like I need to keep up with a little homeschooling at least. And will probably miss more when he does go back September too.

It's not even the schooling I feel so bad about, he's in kindergarten so I can handle that. I can't put my finger on why I even feel down about it really.

I guess it may be that as he goes to a small remote school which goes from age 5-18 they're all involved together and they'll all miss the graduation (which is a huge deal here.)

Seeing the footage of an empty Bristol shocked me yesterday, it's although we've been in isolation longer as he was actually ill for two weeks before it's only sinking in now.

@00100001 all states are different. Some actually go through the summer now. Ours finishes mid June usually.

Seriously @fernsandfeathers - it really doesn’t matter at all from the schooling perspective at that age. Of course it’s difficult for all sorts of other reasons but I wouldn’t worry about that aspect.

He's in kindergarten and you are homeschooling him? Bit OTT surely just do some crafts and water play with him and I'm sure he will catch up

@StoorieHoose - yeah why would they even bother with an early years curriculum after all it's just a bit of painting and water play

But there are kids who don't go to kindergarten / nursery and jump straight in at P1 / reception surely?

I know that's not all early years is about but it is play based which is what the OP can do at home but not follow a curriculum

Kindergarten is the year above nursery here, so the same as year 1 for the UK. He was 6 when he went in so I really feel like I can't slack on the maths/English, they already start with that later here (don't do it at prek/nursery.)

@fernsandfeathers what State are you in? I work in a school in NH, I assume we wont be back this year, but our Governor has not made that decision yet. Actually I'm trying to be hopeful that they will let us back in June for a few weeks so there is some kind of "closure" to the school year. Not seeing the kids again this year would be so hard, especially my 8th Graders who will be moving up to High School next year.

I'm just as sad from a social aspect too.

There's no 'back to school' date in the UK for schools at the moment. All we know is that lockdown is continuing for now. Things change daily and weekly, so no concrete decisions can be made more than a week or two in advance and as we know we're far from ready to open schools again, there's no point announcing dates.

We might go back after the May half term so very early June in England, but that's far from certain. They could quite easily decide just to scrap the entire school year and start again in August in Scotland and early September in England and Wales, rather than bother to go back for a few weeks late in the summer term.

Maine, our governor and DOE advised it last night so most schools have called it this morning.

Sorry OP I didn't realise kindergarten was the same as P1. Have the school given you any resources to follow

That is a possibilty not a fact.

Not yet but I expect it to be. Texas has stay home order until 5 May. School gets out 21 May for summer. I doubt they’d want the upheaval of going to school for a couple of weeks, unless they plan to extend the year into the summer holidays. I’ve told mine to expect they won’t go back until the new school year.

@StoorieHoose a few work sheets but they teach SO differently to how I've taught other kids. Reading is very different, they've learnt common sight words rather than phonetics and maths?! Common core is blowing my mind how different it is, not sure if it's a US or just time thing lol!

Thank god he's not 10, I'd be floundering hard right now!

I work in a Scottish school and we have no idea when we’ll be back so I don’t know where August has come from. I’ll wait until we hear from the Government!
