Well it's real now. DS's school (in the US) cancelled until September.

Got the email this morning. I'm in the States. Feel sad, ds has had health issues so had only done 4 months of kindergarten since September.

5 more months of homeschooling. Good grief.

I haven't told him yet, he's going to be upset, he's so lonely. What strange times we're living in.

Anyone else had school cancelled for the rest of the year?

Blackandwhite where on earth did you hear mid August? I’m in Scotland and I can assure you it’s not been decided.

Where did you get this information.

MamaBearOnLockdown · 08/04/2020 16:35

I'm from London and they are thinking about reopening schools after Easter holidays

that would be after next week, it won't happen, or what would have been the point of closing them down in the first place! Especially in London which is not doing so well.

Willow2017 · 08/04/2020 16:35

*The weather is stunning, if you have a garden do lots of painting, mess with some sand and water and let your child decide.
How do you know?

Op is worried about her 6yr old falling behind due to being off school ill prior to them shutting, the teaching methods are very different to what she is used to so painting and sand isnt going to help much!

I don't think our schools (in Italy) will open until September either.

neveradullmoment99 · 08/04/2020 16:38

All the learning done in Scotland is to be work already covered so revision. People need to look at this without panicking about ch. Progress. In reality here in Scotland, they have done the majority of the year except 3.5 months. Everone will be in the same place!

I am a teacher and we have been told by unions, only revision is to be given.

Hi fernsandfeathers - we hope you don't mind but we've tweaked the title of your thread slightly so people are aware you're in the US.

Sending good wishes to you and your DS. Flowers

SoloMummy · 08/04/2020 16:43

Year above nursery is reception in the UK. So that's still early years, play focused learning.

CobyKnobe · 08/04/2020 16:44

I think that's a really bad idea, what will be different come september?

I think they need to go back soon, like Sweden and Austria are doing

museumum · 08/04/2020 16:47

If it's the year they start at age 6 then it will be important for learning to read. OP - if i were you i'd do reading by phonics at home. there's so much online you can use. I wouldn't worry too much about what they do in the US. Can you get alphablocks on iplayer? it's very good but you need to start at episode 1 series 1.

RaraRachael · 08/04/2020 16:54

I'm in Scotland and we haven't been told anything. Personally I would like to go back for the last 2 weeks (mid June) to finish up with my current class and make arrangements for the following one.

Healthyandhappy · 08/04/2020 17:03

Teach him his times tables and make sure he can write his name and read? Check he understands what he is reading that's what my oldest did in y1. My youngest is 5 6 in nov still cant read as she hates it

jadey0891 · 08/04/2020 17:54

@MamaBearOnLockdown
Exactly I don't understand

CroissantsAtDawn · 08/04/2020 17:59

Teach your monster to read is absolutely fantastic!

DS1 learnt to read in French at school. Then 2 weeks of playing the game for 30-45 minutes a day and he was a fluent reader in English.

The website version is free. Tablet or phone version is paying.

Natsku · 08/04/2020 18:03

Focus on literacy and maths OP, those are the key things at that age and there are lots of websites to help. DD learnt to read with Reading Eggs for instance.

Schools are officially closed until mid May in Finland but our school has told us to be prepared for it not opening until the autumn. Term ends at the end of May/beginning of June anyway.

fernsandfeathers · 08/04/2020 19:27

Thanks all. They actually do teach your monster to read at school so ds has been doing that a bit. Also lexia which is another good one.

I am British living in the US yes. Smile

He's just had a big cry when I told him but had cheered himself up with 'at least I get to lie in mornings now instead of having to get up early'. Considering he's up and downstairs by 6.30am I'm not quite sure what he's talking about but if that's his silver lining I'll go with it!

He's translates teach your monster to some of the other kids at school when they don't understand the British accent. Grin
