Dog owners very irresponsible letting them of leafs on walks knowing they too can spread covid19?

Today on my permitted walk in semi rural area two men having a day on the beach just let thier dog run wild with no consideration for social distancing.

With reports on dogs, cats and the latest tiger having symptoms and testing positive for covid19 should dig owners be allowed to let thier dogs just jump on passers by?

I saw the dog coming and moved about 4 metres away from the men. One just lit up a fab and did nothing and the other watched.

When I moved the dig chased me as I ran to try to climb up a hill. I threw stones near it to try to deter but didn't work and owner eventually took him and said he was being friendly. More like dangerous. I said look we are all trying to social distance and who knows if your dog has covid19 and some of us are trying to keep ourselves and others safe and social distance!

Shouldnt dog owners be more careful?

You threw stones at someone's dog.

You sound like a head case and I would have told you so if you were throwing stuff at my dog.

Why were you sat/stood still anyway unless you're breaking the outdoors rule. Just keep walking and ignore the dog next time.

TARSCOUT · 07/04/2020 18:49

Get a grip. Dogs need exercise too! Like others I'm more concerned about irresponsible humans. Have to get up at 6:30 am to walk our dog because the parks are heaving!!
This (with minor alterations)! - every morning our local walks are inundated with messy humans and their annoying children running towards you wanting to say hello and trying to run you over on their bikes. Pulling at the newly growing trees and bushes and wrecking them. Wonder what would happen if I started chucking stones at them?.

twinkle2306 · 07/04/2020 18:50

@LolaSmiles hardly irrelevant if RSPCA etc have endorsed it. Last time I checked children won't run for miles and miles away from you up to a stranger and jump all over them. Maybe mine is just well trained?
It's a period of (at the moment) another week it won't kill them being on a lead and won't affect them at all. lots of ways to use the same energy at home.

SilverBangle · 07/04/2020 18:51

LolaSmiles Oops! Sorry 🙈 I’m catching up. Just come back from walking my dog. I am happy to report all dogs (on and off lead) and humans were very well behaved and kept the social distancing rule. Phew! 😷

AwrightDoreenTakeAFuckinDayOff · 07/04/2020 18:53

The dog I walk needs off lead time. We go where it is quiet. Or when it is quiet. And no one is around. If someone appears, it is back on the lead time. All the games played doesn’t compensate for running free.

The poor thing had a rotten start to life and needs this to feel good about the world.

I keep hearing that people need to do this that and the next thing for their mental health. Fine. Animals need different things too. Some will cope. Some will not.

But Before I left for work, I had a strong word with the birds not to shite in my garden lest they spread it. I also told the hedgehog to stay under the shed until he knew for certain there was an exclusion zone.

I put a sign up for the cat who lives 3 houses away asking it to not come in my garden. Obviously. I don't want it rubbing the virus on my plants or garden seat. Or rubbing up against my legs when I’m hanging out washing.

I’m undecided whether to have a word with the ned at the top of the road who likes to have his ned mate over for a beer or two. Or indeed my neighbours who continually have people over. Despite one of them being fairly vulnerable. Weed and party time is good for their mental health apparently.

I won’t say anything to the people having picnics or letting their children play in the play park with other children - despite it being cordoned off due to the virus. Handy for the kids that their parents can lift them over the fence. Because none of them are risking themselves or others. Clearly.

No. The crime of spreading it lies with Fido and tiddles. And perhaps an errant tiger or hyena or two.

I’m unsure whether I should call a meeting at work given that some clearly know better and we have it all wrong.

Current RSPCA official guidance re cats, @twinkle2306

Minimise contact with your outdoor cat. Dunno what your 'RSPCA woman' was saying, but it doesn't look like it was founded. Perhaps just her opinion?

twinkle2306 · 07/04/2020 19:00

@Eckhart apologies it was cats protection. Do I have to keep my cat inside if I am ill?
If you’ve been diagnosed with, are suspected of having or are displaying characteristic symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19), it is advisable to minimise the amount of time your cat spends outdoors unsupervised. If possible, keep your cat indoors if they are happy to be kept indoors. Ensuring your cat continues to get daily activity is important for their wellbeing.

Eckhart · 07/04/2020 19:02

Ah, you didn't tell me we were talking about people with symptoms.

Veterinari · 07/04/2020 19:03

@twinkle2306

I'm not sure anyone has disagreed that short-term restrictions are fine. It's not the point that was being made though

twinkle2306 · 07/04/2020 19:04

@Eckhart 'especially if you suspect you have symptoms of the virus should be kept indoors for this exact reason.' We're my words

No matter what the crisis you know you can rely on MN for an utterly barking dog thread,

I like that, it makes me feel secure because I know some things never change, a bit like John Lewis and their haberdashery. It will be there as long as the Sun rises, just as there always is a dog bashing thread here.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 07/04/2020 19:08

If possible, keep your cat indoors if they are happy to be kept indoors.

Oh so it's as long as the cat is happy, and what if the dogs isn't happy to be on the lead.

Some animals are equal, others more so.

Lock all cats in, save lives.

twinkle2306 · 07/04/2020 19:11

@ChardonnaysPetDragon why wouldn't your dog be satisfied with an on lead walk? My pup is a working dog, normally has 2 hour walks a day minimum with about 45 mins of each walk off lead. Now she's going out for one walk as per the guidelines and being kept on lead. When we get home we are doing scent work around the house and garden and agility in the garden (£20 set from amazon) we've also made some games out of empty toilet roll and kitchen roll tubes with some of her food inside in the evenings she flakes out as normal, hasn't changed her behaviour in any way at all

Eckhart · 07/04/2020 19:13

'Especially' doesn't indicate that that's the only circumstances for the recommendation, it indicates it's a rule for everyone, but especially if they're ill.

Fact is, according to the quote you posted yourself, even if you're ill, you shouldn't keep an outdoor cat in if it distresses the cat.

Wellbeing of animals is important. Risk of transmission from animals is minuscule. Those two things aren't my beliefs; they're accepted facts.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 07/04/2020 19:13

Because they see all those cats roaming free and feel like they are second class animals?

Alsohuman · 07/04/2020 19:18

I’d love to have a drink with you when all this is over @AwrightDoreenTakeAFuckinDayOff 🍷

AwrightDoreenTakeAFuckinDayOff · 07/04/2020 19:23

Me too also human Wine

Watch out though, I’m from the streets and gutter level and uneducated according to some.

I’ll just get meffed in the corner and nod at all the witticisms. I will fist a hole through my tights when visiting the little room and I shall throw MN insults at randoms knowing fine they will have no idea what I mean. I will be triumphant momentarily. Before passing out in a puddle of my own sick.
Wink

AwrightDoreenTakeAFuckinDayOff · 07/04/2020 19:26

I forgot to say I’d be singing the Gilbert and Sullivan Gondolieri song - substituting Veterinari in there as I always do when I see their name.

It is the simple things. Smile

pigsDOfly · 07/04/2020 19:33

@mumieone I wouldn't dream of going to face book or twitter for my information. I was assuming that's where you got your information from, as you well know; I'm assuming you can read a clear sentence.

YappityYapYap · 07/04/2020 19:37

You need to go and phone your GP and get something to calm yourself down pronto. Running up a hill and throwing stones at a dog because it approached you and might have the virus? 🤔

nicky7654 · 07/04/2020 19:49

Far too many dogs being dumped because of stupidity, As the shelters!! You cannot catch Corona off a dog!!!!!

Alsohuman · 07/04/2020 20:00

You’re on @AwrightDoreenTakeAFuckinDayOff, you sound like my kind of woman. We’d have a blast.

Flaxmeadow · 07/04/2020 20:16

Have you ever tried reporting them for being off lead in the parks where you want to have your sandwiches and throw your balls?

Yes but nothing changes.

There are almost 10,000 dog attacks every year in the UK that require hospital treatment, some of those attacked, many of them children, have to have limbs amputated and suffer other life changing injuries. But people still will not keep dogs on leads in public places.

Even with this crisis, when there is some evidence that dogs can pass this virus on, they still will not put their dog on a lead. They even make jokes and brag about it

Sickening

Flaxmeadow · 07/04/2020 20:25

Wellbeing of animals is important

Yes and this is probably why there is a growing animal rights movement that is opposed to the keeping of pets. Keeping certain pets they believe is cruel. Very large dogs in urban environments for example. Not good
