Bike rides

So, if someone goes on a 30, 40, 50+ bike ride, what explicit reasons can I give for why they can't do it?

Just for clarity, I don't think it should happen. But when challenged, people say there is no contact, routes are quiet etc. Just wondering how to respond to this.

Sorry, I meant 30, 40, 50+ mile bike ride

None because it's not prohibited to ride a bloody bike.

DuchessOfBeddington · 06/04/2020 22:40

Why are you challenging people if you don’t even know yourself why they shouldn’t.

For clarity I don’t ride a bike, just playing devils advocate.

whenskiesaregrey · 06/04/2020 22:43

I know that people shouldn't be traveling unnecessary distances. I know that we are being told not to travel unless it's for the explicit reasons. I'm just asking for clarity, what's wrong with that?

Nothing.

Squiz81 · 06/04/2020 22:45

None.

CatBatCat · 06/04/2020 22:45

30 mile round trip is/was my daily commute.

whenskiesaregrey · 06/04/2020 22:46

I'm not talking about a commute btw. I'm talking about a recreational bike ride. So that's okay?

YouKnowWhoo · 06/04/2020 22:48

I guess the only thing you could say is that it can’t take more than an hour?

Cycling is allowed as your form of exercise.

Makeitgoaway · 06/04/2020 22:49

None, it's entirely within the rules. Why do you want it not to be?

TheArchSorcererofContwaraburg · 06/04/2020 22:50

You're not looking for clarity, you're looking to force your opinion on this person that you are right. You are not.

Makeitgoaway · 06/04/2020 22:50

YouKnowWhoo, there is no one hour max rule either . Why are people so determined to make up rules?

BilboBercow · 06/04/2020 22:51

People can cycle for exercise. It's entirely within the rules.

whenskiesaregrey · 06/04/2020 22:51

It's not a case of what I want or don't want. But my understanding is that you can't go out on a bike ride for 3,4+ hours. So, you can?

I'm autistic. I interpret things literally. My understanding was that this didn't fall under the remit of exercise locally.

So I could go on a long walk through the countryside? I thought the guidance was no?

MummyPop00 · 06/04/2020 22:54

Up to going down with CV symptoms last week, I was doing a hilly 10 miles on the bike, which took about 45 mins.

I think that’s about right, give or take, without being construed as taking liberties with the govt guidance.

Missanneshirley · 06/04/2020 22:55

I think the problem is that the further you go/the longer you cycle for, the more you increase your risk of an accident. If you come off your bike 30 miles from home you are going to take up the emergency services time unnecessarily and potentially spread the virus.

braaaiiins · 06/04/2020 22:57

None. They are perfectly within their rights and current recommendations.

Makeitgoaway · 06/04/2020 23:00

There are plenty of opinions but the rules don't set a limit on the length of walks or rides. OP, the only issues with long country walks were when crowds drove to beauty spots to do them. If you do can do it locally then, yes you can.

Cheeryandmerry · 06/04/2020 23:04

They are within the rules. That said, I’ve gone from 50+ mile rides to 15-ish and am sticking closer to home. My friend had a very serious accident a few weeks ago before lockdown (broken bones, surgery and still in hospital) and waited more than 2 hours on the road for an ambulance. Imagine that now.

whenskiesaregrey · 06/04/2020 23:05

Okay, maybe it's the subjective interpretation of exercise I'm struggling to understand then. I don't think a recreational bike ride to this extent is 'necessary' IMO. I interpreted exercise as a 'getting out of the house' basic kind of thing. But I'm also find it hard to draw the line between necessary and unnecessary. Oh I don't know.

OP posts:
Makeitgoaway · 06/04/2020 23:06

Yes, I'm annoyed at people making up rules but I've swapped long bikerides for running and staying closer to home, so I'm more likely to be able to limp home, even if I am hurt.

Makeitgoaway · 06/04/2020 23:08

You can go out for exercise and essentials. There is no rule that the form or amount of exercise must be essential.

Doryhunky · 06/04/2020 23:08

There is no harm in solo bike rides. That is why you are struggling to try to make out
It is wrong.

AlbusSeverusPotter13 · 06/04/2020 23:09

There’s no rule to stop anyone cycling that far.
