I got a refund with three clicks on Ryanair app and they had only cancelled my outbound flights but I got both refunded no problem

maddy68 · 19/04/2020 11:19

There are still flights in and out of the UK. Unfortunately if it's not cancelled you won't get a refund. You could try travel insurance and quote the government advice not to travel

Passthebubbly · 19/04/2020 11:23

I had a 4 day trip to imitate booked for May 4th through on the beach flying Ryanair. All cancelled last week hotel paid back money immediately still waiting on flight refund.

Ibiza lol I hate autocorrect

KaptenKrusty · 19/04/2020 11:28

If it’s not cancelled then you need to go through travel insurance - the insurance should pay out if FCO travel advice is not to travel! (Check your policy)

My flight to Ireland a few weeks back wasn’t cancelled - but I was able to change the flights for a later date for free.

Only could have gotten a refund through travel insurance

KaptenKrusty · 19/04/2020 11:31

Ah I see - no travel insurance! Don’t make that mistake again

ScarletFever · 19/04/2020 12:04

@Rezie
They have the money to go on the trip but are too tight ( or stupid ) to pay for insurance.
Standard travel insurances dont cover pandemic. If you start including all unlikely events to your insurance it will cost more than the trip. So in this case it is unlikely that insurance would help. I already mentioned earlier that my travel insurance included pandemic coverage, but only up to 14 days from pandemic declaration. After that they dont have to cover.

Anyone who booked after the pandemic, rightly shouldn't be covered. Trips booked before would be covered, so my trip in August is covered, as i booked it last year. There is no excuse not to get insurance as soon as you book the trip, it should be mandatory to have it. If you can afford a holiday then you can afford insurance. If you cannot afford insurance, then you cannot afford the holiday.

I have travel insurance and a fat lot of help it has turned out to be, even though i added on travel disruption.

Didn't receive a penny from not going skiing as disinclination to travel - glad we didn't go as slopes shut and France on lockdown 2 days after we decided not to go.

Summer Costa rica trip - thankfully flights cancelled and managed to get a cash refund. Insurance should cover me for the non refundable deposit of one accommodation and flights from local airport to Gatwick - right ? Well apparently highly unlikely as Easyjet will let us change - ok fair enough - and none on the accommodation as they are offering to let us offset against a future trip - except no idea if we will be able to travel in the 12 month timeline they want to offer.

Also booked some weekends away - doubt I'll get a penny back from them as one to Dublin where flights are bizarrely still running and a couple of trips with good old Ryanair in September where doubtless they will weazle out of actually cancelling.

So please don't berate people for not having insurance. Yes it usually pays out under normal circumstances, but in this pandemic, it appears to be money down the drain.

ScarletFever · 19/04/2020 13:32

So please don't berate people for not having insurance

and this is why there are gofundmes for repatriation, and for help with medical bills abroad..

Its not just getting your money back when you cant go, its also for helping you get back when something goes wrong.

This pandemic is a very unusual situation, but If you can afford a holiday then you can afford insurance. If you cannot afford insurance, then you cannot afford the holiday.

Amboseli · 19/04/2020 13:36

Why haven't you got travel insurance? People who book flights and travel without adequate travel insurance and then expect to be bailed out by the tax payer or others are selfish idiots.

Rezie · 19/04/2020 14:00

Anyone who booked after the pandemic, rightly shouldn't be covered. Trips booked before would be covered, so my trip in August is covered, as i booked it last year.
In my personal example the travel insurance is on going (and has been for years). Holiday has been booked in December. The pandemic was announced March 12 (if I recall). The insurance with pandemic clause only covers cancellation due to covid 19 up to 14 since the announcements. So basically if your trip started between March 12 and March 26 they would cover. My trip would have started April 11. Therefore my insurance didn't have to cover it. If you Google travel insurance covid19 you'll find a lot of cases where travel insurance won't cover anything.

I agree getting an insurance after pandemic shouldn't pay anything. But that is not the case here.

Amboseli · 19/04/2020 14:09

Whether your insurance covers it totally depends on your individual policy. If you went for the cheapest possible type it's very very unlikely you'll be covered. A more comprehensive and more expensive policy is likely but depends on policy wording.

Like everything you get what you pay for.

But I do find it very entitled and ignorant if you book a trip, don't bother taking out insurance, to save your own money, but if anything goes wrong you then expect others ie the taxpayer to bail you out. I'd rather taxpayers money went to the NHS or other public services.

LooQoo · 19/04/2020 16:31

Airbnb have been great. We sent them the emails showing the flights had been cancelled and they refunded our money 3 days later. Good customer service is still happening.

Onmyown1 · 19/04/2020 16:42

Myself and 7 friends were booked to go to Spain for Easter with Ryanair. They cancelled the flights so I requested a refund. I had 2 emails stating refunds were taking longer (totally understandable). Then I received a voucher for all flights (4 weeks later). They are only now giving vouchers and no cash refunds will be given until after this is all over, this was stated on the email. I phoned and requested a cash refund so they have placed me back in a queue to receive one. I’m not the only one, it’s happening to everyone.
