Before the lockdown I checked our supplies Vitamin C, Zinc, Calpol and adult paracetamol. I topped up where necessary and added in echinacea tablets and cough drops. I bought a salt inhaler which I’ve read can build up lungs (asthma family) which we’ve been using although possibly just a fad. Anyone else looked at their home medicine kits?

a couple of things not mentioned on here already, a couple of types of Mucolytics - helps to break up mucus in the lungs. IMPORTANT - Please do your own research before deciding to buy.

Bromelain capsules (on Amazon)
Ambroxol hydrochloride (Flavamed)

MarshaBradyo · 06/04/2020 20:04

Paracetamol, already had a thermometer

Going to rtft to see how lax this is

MarshaBradyo · 06/04/2020 20:06

Maybe I need more oxygen related products for Ds who has mild asthma but then again I have zero knowledge and am wary

Will read up

shinynewapple2020 · 06/04/2020 20:29

Bloodyhell I have no idea what half of these things are!

I have extra tinned food in case we can't get out, lemsip and a thermometer- which I'm using most days I feel slightly 'off'

I also have vitamin c and zinc tablets I'm taking daily, manuka honey and kefir which is good for immune system, also vitamins D.

I bought some cough medicine at the start of the outbreak which DS has since used for a cold.

So - salt pipe, iodine and oximeter? Will investigate!

LynetteScavo · 06/04/2020 20:34

I hadn't thought about an oximeter. Is it a case of you get what you pay for with them, or can I go for a cheap one?

I bought batteries furchte thermometer, but I now seem to have broken it though over use I may have been a little paranoid a couple of weeks ago

Seventyone72seventy3 · 06/04/2020 20:38

Oximeter here too. A friend had covid and she said it really helped as they felt they weren't actually getting enough oxygen but they actually were.

Oximeter - cheap is fine. The one I use for work only cost about £10. Bought on Amazon.

Standrewsschool · 06/04/2020 20:52

Never heard if a salt pipe before.

ChiaraRimini · 06/04/2020 20:57

I would not recommend inhalation of essential oils for respiratory problems as they are not tested and can be potent, lungs are very delicate. Stick with plain steam inhalations only if you feel they help.
I've got plenty of cocodamol as the codeine helps soothe coughs.
Repeat prescriptions for asthma meds.
Already had peak flow meter, BP cuff
Oximeters now sold out on amazon or very expensive.

ChiaraRimini · 06/04/2020 20:57

I've started taking VitD as well as a precaution

Tonyaster · 06/04/2020 21:00

I think I've had it and the only thing that helped was Lemsip. I hate lemsip normally.

goldpartyhat · 06/04/2020 21:12

Paracetamol and a hand held nebuliser. I have tea tree oil and may use that to steam inhale. Keeping the video of the breathing exercises. Have a list of all the symptoms and what happens when they get worse.

Tonyaster · 06/04/2020 21:14

Oh and a thermometer.

Sgtmajormummy · 06/04/2020 21:25

Oximeters are on Fitbits and similar devices.
Or are you talking about more professional equipment?

Tonyaster · 06/04/2020 21:33

I did do steam inhalation when things were quite bad. I don't put any oils in as I think they can be quite bad for your lungs if you overdo it, not sure if that's true or not.

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 06/04/2020 21:35

Having recently had it (I think) the things I found useful were, sugary drinks - a couple of times my body literally screamed out for sugar, ice pops as I had a sore throat and like PP said avoided dairy as its linked to the formation of mucus.

This thing dehydrated you like a bastard. Rehydration drinks were useful. Don’t worry about flavours, everything tasted like water.

We had co cocodamol luckily in as paracetamol didn’t even touch the sides with the headache.

Gaviscon had really bad acid reflux.

Been having apple cider/turmeric/lemon juice/ honey drink to help with inflammation and boost immune system.

Also had some ready made complan drinks in (my only dairy concession) as easy to drink with nutritional value.

If you do get it,rest, drink, rest, sleep on alternate sides/front. Sit up as much as possible/ do the breathing exercises on you tube try and flatten your back as you breath in to maximise the air flow to the base of your lungs as you do them. don’t wear anything tight that might restrict lungs or diaphragm. Really really helped me. The gunk I coughed up was disgusting and really eased the pressure on my lungs. Move round as soon as able.

Tonyaster · 06/04/2020 21:37

Gaviscon had really bad acid reflux yes! Absolutely this! I got through a huge bottle.

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 06/04/2020 21:49

@tonyaster hope you are feeling better now,

I was also burping like a drunken old man who has drunk nothing but fizzy alco pops for years, so guessing it can mess up your stomach etc. It’s a really messed up virus!

Tonyaster · 06/04/2020 21:53

Lifeisgenerallyfun I still have a nagging cough and a weird sense of smell (lost it completely for 2 weeks). Also deaf in one ear.

PonderTweek · 06/04/2020 23:12

@MinkowskisButterfly Only just now noticed your post! I'm not an expert on oximeters but my husband says you might want to spend around £30-35 on one to ensure you get an accurate one. It would also depend on what functions you want - my husband would probably want to have all the tech because he's medical, but I would be happy to just know my oxygen levels and heart rate. I know ours are from Amazon so maybe have a little browse and check the reviews? I will try to find ours tomorrow and can post the brand names if I can find them (my toddler loves to play with them so they're always missing!). Smile
