How soon before holiday are they being cancelled?

Were supposed go be going to Majorca in June but fully expecting it to be cancelled.

We're going through on the beach (flights with Tui) and obviously still have to pay the balances in order to hopefully get a refund.

Just wondering for anyone who has had one cancelled, how soon before you were due to go was it cancelled?

I'm due to pay my holiday balance next week with TUI for a holiday leaving at the start of July. TUI's current position is that "they are looking forward to taking us an holiday as planned, if we want to cancel or amend then normal t&cs apply", i.e we lose the full deposit.

I'm reluctantly coming to the conclusion that I'd rather write off the £800 deposit than give them another penny. There is a high chance it would get cancelled and I'd be able to rearrange or get the money back. But if it is legally possible to fly to Greece in july they will be sending customers there with zero regard for safety (see their actions at the start of March), and I'd end up losing thousands. Not worth the risk or the hassle.

I always felt it was safest booking through a big company like TUI, but Air bnb have actually been great at refunding another booking. I know who I'll be booking with in future.

I don't think anyone wants to go anywhere for a long time! Although people do surprise me and I'm sure a few will still go away in the autumn. I know I'm not keen to go to Europe as they will need time to sort themselves out.

Sorry to hear others are also having problems with their travel arrangements but particularly Tui. We've gone from being loyal devotees to absolutely hating what they are (not) doing right now. Zero comms, Facebook is the only way we can communicate and they keep fobbing us off/I'm attacked by 2 particularly vicious posters who are defending Tui.
We're really concerned that their delay is purely down to pushing for legislation to refuse customer refunds and just give credit notes/rebookings instead. Which could be useless if they go bust, insurance will be near impossible and holiday costs will have gone up.
Yes many at Tui are furloughed and can't work, but they had plenty of time before that to put out reassuring comms and begin the refund process. They haven't done anything.
I'm so disappointed in them and can't believe they took several ships out just as countries were beginning lockdown, which subsequently became stranded. I don't think we'll see our £4.5k again.

I was due to fly today. I had an email saying we were cancelled on 20th March and they would call me the following week. I hadn’t heard by the 31st March, so after 40 minutes on hold I requested a full refund and the funds were in my bank account on 2nd April. This was Jet2.

windchimes23 · 05/04/2020 21:14

I was due to fly to Gran Canaria on the 10th April, got an email saying it was cancelled on the 20th March and they'd be in touch in a week. Waited a week and got another email saying they'd be in touch soon. I decided to call them on the 1st April as I'd not heard from them. I was on hold for an hour but got through and they refunded me, the money was back in my PayPal account before I'd finished the call.

windchimes23 · 05/04/2020 21:15

^^That was Jet2

Doilooklikeatourist · 05/04/2020 21:16

We’re booked on a Tui holiday . Leaving on 20th April , the easy jet flight we’re on is cancelled , the hotel we’re booked in is closed , and the island we’re going to is making tourists quarantine for 14 days on arrival ( we’re going for a week ) however the holiday hasn’t been cancelled yet , apparently holidays leaving after 16th April are going ahead
We’ve had a phone call from the local travel agent we booked with , offering to rebook us , but we want a refund
We’ll just join the queue ....it’s all being dealt with so badly

Hippywannabe · 05/04/2020 21:18

We are due to go for May half term with Tui. We would like a refund as we can't have holiday off together again this year.
Currently Tui are saying on FB that holidays after 16th April are due to go ahead.
I'll start packing then...

Lala241280 · 05/04/2020 21:22

Holidays companies are encouraging people to re book for other dates
If people keep asking for a refund these companies will not survive and so so many people will be out of a job.
Many of the holiday companies like TUI and JET2 have info on their website but are getting phone calls for people travelling in July / August / September time which does not help the people travelling this month
Let’s work together with the travel companies not slate them

Inspiralcarpetry · 05/04/2020 21:36

I understand what you're saying Lala, but look at the difference even on this thread between Jet2 and Tui. We're meant to be on holiday right now and haven't had comms from them. Other cruise companies have been proactive and thinking of future custom. They reacted quickly, offering refunds or attractive rebooking offers with guaranteed refunds in the event of cancellation. Had Tui done that quickly, we'd have felt reassured and probably would have rebooked with a guarantee.
The nation is in turmoil, I'm furloughed on 80% pay as is husband. I can't feel sorry for them hanging onto our money without telling us what the plan is, I've lost trust in them.

Lala241280 · 05/04/2020 21:46

Inspiralcarpetry

Totally get what ur saying they defo have not been the best handling it
I believe many of their staff are on furlough
which maybe the reason for the lack of response
I am too on furlough (working in travel , not TUI)
I do know all TA’s , holiday companies , airlines etc are doing their damn best in this awful situation

dingit · 05/04/2020 21:49

Marking my place. Due to travel Tuesday. Awaiting just under £10k refund from tui. Not holding my breath.

Inspiralcarpetry · 05/04/2020 21:53

Lala, apologies if I projected onto you. Just worried about the money and lack of knowledge as to what their plan is x

Lala241280 · 05/04/2020 22:05

I totally get it , like you say if they communicated better it might be easiest to understand what’s happening .This is an awful situation for us to all be in and hopefully sooner than later we will all get out of this nightmare #staysafe

Careradvice2019 · 05/04/2020 22:12

Luxury escapes

Needtobepositive · 05/04/2020 22:15

Has anyone booked with Hays? I keep phoning to see if we can rearrange ours. We’ve paid half but don’t really want to pay the other half in case flights go out in August and we have a vulnerable child. Would like to go next year instead but can’t get through to see if that’s an option. How are we meant to pay the next instalment if can’t get through on phones and shops are shut?

mummymayhem18 · 05/04/2020 22:16

My husband and daughter were due to fly to Florida yesterday for 2 weeks with Virgin Holidays. Hasn't had a phone call from them yet. He wants a refund as the credit vouchers have to be used by the end of the year and he wants to go same time next year over Easter. He was on hold with virgin for 4 hours yesterday before they cut you off without a word. Phoned back up and was on hold again, same thing happened. He had an email today to say someone will ring soon but I will believe it when I see it. The holiday is about £6K.

june2007 · 05/04/2020 22:26

They said they wanted payment 4 wks before rather then 8 wks before. But instead I was able to rearrange holiday for next year. They may have changed the advice now but it wasn,t looking promising.
