Why the hell are construction sites reopening next week?

I have 4 builders on my fb. All of them have been recalled to work next week.

2 are working on the same site building houses
1 is on another site and I don’t know where the other works

Have they just quietly decided to reopen them after the uproar when they didn’t close at lockdown?

I agree for a lot of sites, but I'm involved with a College site that's supposed to be taking students in September and absolutely has to be complete.

Some have reopened with skeleton staff where it would be too dangerous to leave them unfinished.

Those that can be closed safely have been.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 04/04/2020 21:38

2 local schools are having undergoing huge expansion projects atm

Neither have closed their sites.

They’re still on external framework and roofing atm so maybe that’s why.

Greysparkles · 04/04/2020 21:38

Because they were never officially shut by government?

LivingDeadGirlUK · 04/04/2020 21:42

The construction sites were never closed, some contractors have made the decision to, but its totally been left to them.

Namelesswonder · 04/04/2020 21:44

They have been officially shut in Scotland. Only building work allowed to continue is related to healthcare.

Chocolatesundae2 · 05/01/2021 20:22

Old thread but listening to a building site when in lockdown is a hell like no other

Everleigh2021 · 05/01/2021 20:29

construction never closed but they did have trouble obtaining supplies

they are outdoors, in winter.

Remmy123 · 05/01/2021 21:10

Why do they have to close? Why are people not happy- enough stuff is closed the economy needs to keep moving ffs

toodleloooo · 05/01/2021 21:55

I wouldn't have thought they'd be particularly high risk in terms of transmission? Does anyone who feels strongly that they should be closed have any stats to the contrary? Happy to be proven wrong.

UntamedShrew · 05/01/2021 22:00

I guess if you have a project that needs finishing to make it habitable that makes sense. My next door neighbour has just announced they are starting building work next month, massive project so they are moving out. Meanwhile we are stuck working and home schooling 2 DC next to a basement dig etc. Somebody shoot me.

Topseyt · 05/01/2021 22:08

I don't think they were ever closed. I don't see why they need to.

BlueBaubles12 · 05/01/2021 22:12

Are building sites a major source of transmission? What’s the point in closing down another part of the economy unless it has a significant impact on case numbers.

From what I can see, most are outdoors and most have pretty stringent safety measures.

Fail to understand what’s to be gained by lobbing another sector under the bus.

JoeJames · 05/01/2021 22:15

Because construction takes priority over schooling Angry, if its about reducing contacts and you say building needs to carry on it does tell you what priorities are

Squiffy01 · 05/01/2021 22:16

Construction isn’t closed. My husband works in the industry they weren’t closed the first lockdown either. Even office people are still going in.

WorraLiberty · 05/01/2021 22:16

Factories are open so I don't seen why construction sites wouldn't be, given they work mostly outside.

PicsInRed · 05/01/2021 22:16

What do you think would happen if major construction projects were suddenly stopped? There are potentially run on impacts to both the financial and property markets as well as the construction sector itself.

BlueBaubles12 · 05/01/2021 22:22

@JoeJames

It’s not really about prioritising one over the other though is it? Schools aren’t closed to keep construction sites open.
WestSideBoom · 05/01/2021 22:36

Loads of things are still open so I don't know why building sites wouldn't be. Almost everyone I know is still working as normal. Farms and factories are still running for example.

Chocolatesundae2 · 05/01/2021 23:18

I’m bothered that we are on lockdown and we have a 86 house build going on and I can’t get out as normal to escape the noise!
When you are stuck in a house listening to extreme diy noise it starts to get to you very quickly believe me! Especially when clients on the phone can hear the reverse beep of the vehicles. Unless you have lived next to a building site you have no idea unfortunately what it is like

Chocolatesundae2 · 05/01/2021 23:19

And construction was closed during the first lockdown in Edinburgh.

joystir59 · 05/01/2021 23:21

So that people can go to work and earn a living?

joystir59 · 05/01/2021 23:23

Lots of people are still going to work. I'm a cleaner for the local council and I have worked right from the beginning of the pandemic.

ScottishStottie · 05/01/2021 23:23

This is an old thread started in last lockdown...

Chimeraforce · 05/01/2021 23:26

Chocolate sundae. Agree I've been wfh next door to 2 brand new homes being constructed. It's fucking awful.
