The Royals jumping ship... part 2

Shiny new thread now we have had some royal crumbs thrown our way.

Will William rejoin the air ambulance like he has been threatening to do? Or was it a bit of lip service in the hope we will all go away and leave him to enjoy his 5* lockdown experience?

Charles has pointlessly 'opened' a hospital via video link, praising the NHS whose rules he flouted by flying to his rural second home country estate, whilst experience coronavirus symptoms. Such a shame he just had to make an emergency dash out of London, being holed up in a Scottish manor surrounded by red squirrels and coniferous forest must be simply awful. I'm sure he would much prefer a 2 bedroom house with a courtyard garden, much cosier.

Harry and Megs have hopped over the pond and now live in LA. Being professionals in self isolation, I'm sure they will be just fine.

On the upside the Queen will be addressing the nation on Sunday, genuinely thrilled for my grandparents who will no doubt be watching with a glass of whisky and a silk cut.

Onto the next chapter...

@thegcatsmother What makes you think it wouldn't work at least as well with a president? As a voter you have some control in who becomes your head of state, as a subject you get no say at all. So you're frightened at the prospect of having a president Blair. Well we could have a Blair monarch and there's nothing you could do about it at all. There are very many things wrong with the current system, inherent inequality just to begin with, lack of transparency, lack of accountability etc etc. In what way do you think that works better than a democratically elected position would?

CathyorClaire · 05/04/2020 11:53

often people fail selection for pilot training

Odd how that has never happened to any royal ever. The same way they've never failed to get into top unis despite some fairly indifferent grades.

The Queen is a figurehead, and in reality has no political clout

Both the queen and Prince Charles have the power of veto over law making and use it. In Charles case he has a say over anything that might affect his private interests.

But it is broken. You chose to ignore my post. How is it better for Charles and Queen and their clan to run away to his country house but everyone else should stay put? How does he get to ‘open’ (the geek of it!) a hospital that was tax-payer funded and will be run by NHS heroes? I still haven’t gotten over the cheek of it.
Also, even if William couldn’t fly a helicopter, why couldn’t he go and volunteer in building the hospital? Even for a photo session?
I think we need to get rid now. There are too many other very rich people. This lot can go and live their lives quietly. Not rub it in our faces.

Mamamia456 · 05/04/2020 12:58

Experi- " Why couldn't he go and volunteer in building the hospital"

I forgot that Prince William was a qualified electrician 🙄

Wolfgirrl · 05/04/2020 13:02

@mamamia465

I'm sorry, which said anything about electricians?

There is plenty of 'unqualified' work to be done in building, general labouring.

Did you think he will actually rejoin air ambulance?

Mamamia456
He has been trained in the forces and forces are building these hospitals (many more need building still).
Is there no job he can do there? I can think of at least five things I could do. He could at least man the phones? A better chance at publicity too, than his Norfolk ‘work from home’ photos it would be. I have serious problems with this slave mentality that we have.

Mamamia456 · 05/04/2020 13:56

Wolfgirrl - Yes, perhaps we could have had a photo of him pushing a wheelbarrow or doing a bit of carpentry haha.

I have no idea on your last point, would you like me to ring him and find out for you?

Experimenopause · 05/04/2020 13:58

Mamamia456
Sounds like you have run out of sound arguments (if you ever had any anyway).

Mamamia456 · 05/04/2020 14:01

Experi - I wish you anti royalists would make up your mind, I thought you didn't want him on the phone, but doing something more "hands on".

Experimenopause · 05/04/2020 14:02

Mamamia456
I thought you were going to get the sarcasm without me having to explain it.

Mamamia456 · 05/04/2020 14:04

Experi - Sounds like people on here are running out of ridiculous suggestions, which is a shame as its keeping me entertained.

Experimenopause · 05/04/2020 14:08

Mamamia456
Well, enjoy while you can. I think the expiry date of this useless lot is getting closer. At least one more positive thing that will come out of this crisis.

Mamamia456 · 05/04/2020 14:10

Just a reminder - The Queen's speech tonight at 8pm 👑👑👑👑👑

Wolfgirrl · 05/04/2020 14:15

@mamamia456

So why isnt it ridiculous that 750000 other people volunteer?

@thegcatsmother - Frezia I am a great believer in 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'. Our system may not be perfect, but it works

I think the fact Johnson was able to unlawfully prorogue parliament with no challenge from the queen clearly shows that the system doesn't work. She is supposed to provide checks and balance to parliament yet she didn't refer this to the supreme court to determine its legality. Irish presidents have referred potential legislation to the supreme court for advice if they believed it may be unconstitutional. That is what a head of state should be doing.

A complete waste of time having an expensive rubber stamp, which is what she showed herself to be, as head of state.

Mamamia456 · 05/04/2020 14:43

Wolfgirrl - I didn't say it was ridiculous, but some of the suggestions on these anti royal threads of what people think the royals should be doing are laughable.

Wolfgirrl · 05/04/2020 15:13

@mamamia456

Okay leaving those to one side, what about the non-laughable ones?

I guess what I'm saying is; would your clear admiration for the royals increase if they rolled up their sleeves and took on some proper volunteering? E.g. Kate batch cooking (this is not ridiculous, there are charities doing this for NHS workers at the moment) or Wills rejoining air ambulance (he has said he wants to apparently, but that's quite different from actually doing it).

And conversely; how will you feel if they continue to do nothing bar the odd tweet?

It's not a trick question, but I'm testing my theory that some royalists will literally support them no matter what they do, and therefore any debate with them is effectively pointless.

Is there anything that would stop you supporting the monarchy?

Experimenopause · 05/04/2020 17:46

People like mamamia are the reason we are still stuck with a system that should have been abolished decades and decades ago.

Wolfgirrl · 11/04/2020 19:38

Well, we are nearly a week on ladies and still zero updates on Wills rejoining the air ambulance! I'll wait another few weeks before I say I told you so...

On the upside Wills and Kate have worked one day (if it was a full day, probably more like a few hours) via video link from their mansion, so they can put their feet up for another few weeks now.

Not a peep from the rest of them.

CathyorClaire · 11/04/2020 21:07

But ...but... but... HMQ has put out an audio message and Andy and Fergie have packed cupcakes for hospice workers which clearly isn't a blatant PR gig. What more could we want for our dime?

vera99 · 12/04/2020 08:51

Harry and whatshername are now the very definitions of totally irrelevant. Let's chalk that up to one of the few benefits of this fucking thing.

vera99 · 12/04/2020 09:07

@CathyorClaire they must think we are stupid.

vera99 · 12/04/2020 09:26

Shame Katre can't pretend to shop at Sainsbury's any more maybe she could have a photo op helping to unpack the Ocado online groceries when the minimum wage driver comes to deliver. I wonder what the staff are doing were they allowed to go home and sit it out with their families or are they on the beck and call of them ? Doors to eject, please.

Wolfgirrl · 12/04/2020 09:34

It transpires that Frogmore Cottage is owned by the Crown Estate (learn something new and awful every day) so why are harry and meghan allowed to keep it now they have quit?!
