Is a recession coming?

Just that really.

What are people's thoughts on the property market and a recession?

I've seen a few threads on here and tbh, apart from arguing no one makes a clear or valid point.

(Please don't give me abuse, I'm just looking for people's thoughts - not to be told it's obvious). Thanks 😃

@HoffiCoffi13 that sounds great. There's no reason why DH can't wfh more, his company are just a bit old fashioned.

GreenWheat · 08/04/2020 09:24

I think that now many companies have seen homeworking work fine, more people will be able to live further out of London and only come in a couple of times a week. Hopefully this will reduce pressure on the public transport network in London, with people only using it a couple of times a week instead of daily

DB works for a bank & they have be told no cash bonuses so things must be bad!

Rebelwithallthecause · 08/04/2020 09:34

Wow bankers not getting bonuses

We are living in a parallel universe

HathorX · 08/04/2020 09:36

Yes. Of course! Buckle up, it’ll be a very bumpy ride.

mochojoes · 08/04/2020 09:38

Unfortunately I'm pretty sure some of the "masters of the universe" got theirs a few weeks before the crisis, what a surprise! DB is a mere foot soldier in the grand scheme of things.

Grin shit's getting real

TheLadyAnneNeville · 08/04/2020 10:14

Ummm, yes. Global. Huge.

mochojoes · 08/04/2020 17:25

After listening to today's update I think it's clear that we are.

MamaJules34 · 09/04/2020 00:16

@haggistramp that's funny, I've spoken to 8 surveyors this week who think nothing of the sort!

People with a vested interest in retaining a strong housing market? How astonishing

Rebelwithallthecause · 09/04/2020 08:25

Same here @MamaJules34

Also - the economist in the times newspaper yesterday did a big write up on recession or depression and yes there will be dips and GDP and high unemployment, but he also said this won’t be for long and the difference between whether we enter a recession or depression all hangs in the balance of how long lockdown lasts

He also said that even in the worst depression in history, things did bounce back again

Yesterday the signs on the FTse and Dow Jones were promising.

Some companies are hit hard but others are gaining more confidence

mochojoes · 09/04/2020 08:49

I hope i'm wrong but some of the things Rishi said didn't fill me with confidence eg

'I've been very clear and very honest that this will take a significant impact on our economy.

In spite of what are unprecedented measures in scale and scope, I can't stand here and say I can save every single job, protect every single business

Rebelwithallthecause · 09/04/2020 08:55

But he didn’t even need to say it really as that’s obvious to anyone who has left the house in the last 4 weeks.

Travel will be hit hardest for a while.

Cineworld need to sustain 767 closed cinemas and potentially all their staff for all that time

The companies supplying to those industries will also be effected

But - there will be a time when people want to travel again and will want to go to the cinema again.

Yes it will be sad if Debenhams doesn’t make it through the administration process, but that’s been on the cards before now too.
The world and the way we shop and spend our money has been changing before this and this has almost sped up those changes.

People who have money will be making more responsible choices.
Companies that were small and struggling before are now finding they are doing better than ever.

It’s a big shift.

mochojoes · 09/04/2020 09:04

It's obvious to some but not all, I think they are planting the seed. Currently lots of people are getting furloughed so they have some security & spending power but realistically how long are the gov going to fund that? We know till May but it's likely we will be under some form of lockdown in May so what then in June/July? That's when it will hit imo
