Hi all

So i usually struggle with generalised anxiety which i was starting to manage until recent events.
With all of the current situations i am really struggling.
I worry about everything and anything health, not being able to see the dr, not getting out etc. Must admit i google any symptoms which is unhelpful and makes me feel worse. This is not covid related.
Tonight i am really struggling i feel very on edge and my chest feels tight. I know this is the anxiety.I use youtube asmr videos at night to help me sleep. In the day i try and do exercise and i am learning keyboard.

I am sure many people are feeling anxious right now. Please can you advise what you do to help with anxiety.

Sending you all best wishes

Have you been prescribed anything for it?

Puppybum · 02/04/2020 22:33

I'm in my 50s and I've been lucky enough to have had good mental health I've never really had anxiety, but all this has knocked me for six.

Hannah021 · 02/04/2020 22:40

I'm a believer. Believing that a superpower is looking after me is very comforting; it is a mindset, accepting that whatever had happened was meant to happen, and whatever didn't happen wasn't meant to happen. it is the only thing that makes me fearless about what could go wrong. I just hope that I won't lose a loved one cuz life without them would be tasteless...

Snowflakes1122 · 02/04/2020 22:42

It’s hard. I find I sometimes need to just switch off the news and throw myself into something else to occupy my mind. Gardening, tidying, baking, a good film etc. Just try to keep your mind busy with other things. Remember this will pass Flowers

Frownette · 02/04/2020 22:47

Would a hot, milky drink help?

Ocean sounds really relax me, maybe put on something soothing, or a song or a bit of tele. Any nice snacks in?

claret3189 · 02/04/2020 22:53

Thank you all. Its really diffocult and i can imagine never experiencing anxiety and now having it is hard.
I guess i feel really alone with these feelings right now

Hi @claret3189 Smile My anxiety has been much worse the last week or so as well. I've managed (mostly) to stop googling covid symptoms and that's helped a lot, so keep trying to stay away from looking up symptoms - I know it's very hard. I use an app called Calm which has loads of meditation, breathing exercises, etc, and that's been really helpful. When you say you exercise, do you mean indoors or getting out for walks? I find that even 10 minutes out in fresh air can help to settle me down - do you have any outside space where you can just sit quietly for a short time?

I hope everything your trying is helping you a bit and that you get a few more suggestions to help you Flowers

claret3189 · 02/04/2020 23:00

Thank you @bamboozled yes i do weights inside and then walk the dogs. I have a sore throat today no cough. The pharmicist said it looks like tonsillitis. I feel more anxious i cant see a doctor. I know that probably sounds silly.
Ill have a look at the calm app that might help.
Thanks

Hi op
Yes I think it is quite normal to have anxiety at the moment,
I stuffs from health anxiety at the best of times.
I phone my GP as my anxiety was sky high last week, she said we are all in the same boat (helpful) and she upped my antidepressants, I work for the NHS, I find I'm better at work when I'm helping other people, it's when I'm at home, especially in the evenings I get anxious, I've got a few days off at the moment so I have gone for the odd walk.
I also meditate ( found on utube) try to drink more water and I take a vitamin b complex and vitamin d plus magnesium, which is suppose to help with anxiety too.
I definitely think exercise helps.
All the best to everyone who's suffer from anxiety!!
I wouldn't wish it on anyone 💐💐

nitgel · 02/04/2020 23:04

Think about how nature is currently. Esp pollution levels which have dropped dramatically. It's beautiful weather, watch the birds, look at the clear skies with no planes. It's fascinating.

claret3189 · 02/04/2020 23:05

Thanks Riv ah i hope you are doing okay in your job. You must really feel it at the minute.
I must say i probably dont drink enough water etc so that can be a quick fix.
Ill look at YouTube and see what else i can find.
I think i need to avoid Dr Google and news throughout the day with the exception of the daily update.

Hi op

I have kept away from the news and social media,
I said to DH just tell me when there's something positive,
The news was making my chest and throat tight.
News tend to focus on the negative,
DR Google will never be your friend, remember that.
All the best.

Babyroobs · 02/04/2020 23:12

I sympathise with you op. I didn't sleep at all because of feeling so anxious.

claret3189 · 02/04/2020 23:15

Yes sleeping is difficult i managed to sleep for 2 hours earlier this evening which means i probably wont sleep tonight. I do tend to watch asmr videos at night as you tend to concentrate so they help you switch off. I find ASMR psychologist is the best she is very soothing.

  1. If you are not on medication then get on some.
  1. Go out for a walk every day.
  1. Log off your phone and your other gadgets.

4, Turn the news off.

  1. Take a bath
  1. Do something that gives you pleasure.

Repeat daily.

I suffered from anxiety for years and CBT taught me how to make sense of it and deal with it.

It certainly taught me this.

You can only control your own behaviour. Everything else is out of your control.

BamboozledandBefuddled · 02/04/2020 23:18

Dogs are good for anxiety Smile I miss having one (although my last two probably caused me even more anxiety in some ways Grin )

claret3189 · 02/04/2020 23:20

I have tried to create some routine with having a shower before bed, going to bed at similiar times etc. I definately need to reduce time on gadgets and watching the news i think.

Big mistake!!!

Dnt do it I dnt need to read the bit going along the bottom.
Going to go for a walk shortly.

op I'm the same, I have GAD with obsessional thinking, I have a huge health anxiety always too! God I'm a mess right now! Joined this thread looking for help too

definitelygc · 03/04/2020 13:07

It's not for everyone but I find reading escapist books really helpful - I've just finished reading the new Philip Pullman. My guilty pleasure for reducing anxiety is watching reality TV programmes like Bake Off or Great British Sewing Bee in the bath with a glass of wine.

claret3189 · 03/04/2020 16:02

I love british sewing bee.
Yes booboo i do too. I have a sore throat currently no cough or fever. I went to thr pharmacy and she had to look at a photo. She thinks its tonsillitis. This really set me off not being able to see a Dr. Of course i understand and totally agree with it. Just makes it hard when like me you obsess when times are normal never despite now.

Take control of improving your own mental health, starting by cracking on with some self help. This is fantastic. Download module one of the workbook here and get started tonight:
