If you're still working, are you taking any annual leave?

Quite a few people have said to me that they're not bothering to take annual leave at the moment, because they can't do anything anyway.

I'm off all over Easter, dh also has a week booked off, a lot of Dhs colleagues have been cancelling their annual leave.

Just interested if the general consensus is that it's pointless using holiday right now.

I've been wfh with two dc so I'm quite looking forward to us both having a week off even if just to potter around and have some adult company.

DH not allowed to cancel or carry over. What a waste.

MadameJosephine · 02/04/2020 21:17

I’ve got 3 days booked off next week that I’m hoping still to take because I’m studying for my masters and have an assignment to write. I usually do my uni work when DD is at her dads but she’s not been going because of the lockdown so I’ve got lots of catching up to do

AwrightDoreenTakeAFuckinDayOff · 02/04/2020 21:17

We have been told we have to take what has already been booked. Only if they need us in to cover will they allow us to cancel. It is a waste but as usual, the little favourites are getting to do as they please.

MeadowHay · 02/04/2020 21:18

I work PT and am now WFH. I doubt I will be taking annual leave til lockdown is over.

BackforGood · 02/04/2020 21:20

We've been told we have to take or leave, or lose it. Year ends at end of August and we've been told no-one will be able to carry more than 5 days over, so, although I'd obviously rather have it when I can actually use it, that isn't an option. Choice is take it and do some jobs or relaxing at home, or lose it.

wendz86 · 02/04/2020 21:20

I am off all next week. I'm WFH and my employer has told us we have to take at least 40% of our holiday before end of June. They are worried what will happen if everyone waits and then takes it all at the same time when we go back. I'm looking forward to some time off working and home schooling.

DownyBuds · 02/04/2020 21:21

Dh and I were both meant to be off the second week but we’ve changed it so we have got one week off each, I cannot wait. Will be so nice to have the quality time with the dc that everyone keeps talking about but if you work full time you can’t have. Even if you work from home.

Bouncingbomb · 02/04/2020 21:23

I'm WFH full time. I will take four days over the next two weeks, so work two days each week plus the easter BH.

I need a break from work and have got some decorating etc I want to do.

mostlydrinkstea · 02/04/2020 21:25

I have the week after Easter booked but as I'm a priest and we are getting more funerals I will take time off when I can.

APurpleSquirrel · 02/04/2020 21:26

DH & I have a few days annual leave booked to cover the Easter holidays, we're still going to keep them as it gives us a break from trying to wfh whilst juggling childcare.

YippeeKayakOtherBuckets · 02/04/2020 21:27

I’m furloughed but DH is working full time at home, 7am to 3pm.

He had booked next week off but he’s cancelled it. Thank god because he would have had 11 days with no structure and no days out and he would have got right on my nerves with board games and ‘family time’ suggestions for that whole stretch.

I love the bones of him but me and the kids have settled into a nice little routine (of not very much tbh) and he is like a bouncy spaniel in his days off. He’ll be hard work enough over the Easter Weekend Grin

Icecreambaby · 02/04/2020 21:28

I have cancelled my days off but now feel very tired as the juggling with childcare and nonstop conference calls and work is draining. Now, thinking about still taking a couple of days off to really take time away from work.

maddening · 02/04/2020 21:28

Oh god yes, I was already booked off next week and I neeeeed the break, so looking forward to it. It is exhausting doing work and home schooling at the same time.

YahBasic · 02/04/2020 21:31

I might take a couple of days to make the last two weeks of April 4 day weeks.

Would be quite nice having 5 four days weeks in a row.

we’ve been “advised” at work to take 70% of our leave by end of September, but they can’t enforce it.

SellFridges · 02/04/2020 21:35

I’m going to take a few days, but not as much as planned. I haven’t fully decided yet but of the five days I had planned in April, I think I’ll take two, but all half days. That means if it gets a bit tough after the “school holidays” I can continue to take half days here and there.

I’ve got the full week off planned at half term to go away but will probably take that regardless. Am certain that we won’t be going away!

CaptainPovey · 02/04/2020 21:37

I WFH full time anyway

I will be off 2 days either side of Easter. I cannot wait

SallyWD · 02/04/2020 21:37

I'm off next week. I thought of cancelling my annual leave but actually I really need it. Home schooling and working from home has left me feeling stressed and exhausted. By taking time off I can actually do nice things with the kids (in the house mostly of course) rather than telling them off all the time because I'm trying to work.

InconvenientPeg · 02/04/2020 21:38

I hadn't booked any off, as hadn't got organised, but we were allowed to move our 4 day cottage booking to October, so need to book that off, and will probably book some odd days as it will be nice to have some downtime. We both like to pace ourselves on holiday anyway, and it will help our employer and be nice to have time with the DC's without having to work.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 02/04/2020 21:39

I had a week booked off at Easter but I've cancelled it. I'm working from home anyway so it doesn't really make much difference.

I've rolled some over from last year which I've been asked to take by the end of May. I've booked Whitsun off. Hopefully we will be free by then.

Schoolchoicesucks · 02/04/2020 21:41

Martin Lewis, Acas and various other law firms seem to be saying that the 4 week carry over for up to 2 years is for all employees. They are amending the working time directive for this.

www.farrer.co.uk/news-and-insights/blogs/coronavirus-and-annual-leave-holiday-entitlement-can-now-be-carried-over-for-two-years/

So no-one should be losing untaken holiday.

IceKitten · 02/04/2020 21:43

I was planning to take next week off and we were going on holiday - obviously that's been cancelled, and I'm really busy with work so it makes no sense to take next week. I'll probably take a couple of days here and there over the next few weeks. My boss is flexible so that should be fine. I think DH will do the same.

RU562341 · 02/04/2020 21:44

Yep. We're essential and have been told to take any booked annual leave, although people with more than 1 week have been asked if they want to take just 1 and hold the second for later in the year- not so they can be in work but so they can rebook holidays etc. Our managers are supportive and say we need time off to relax.

Flixsfoilball · 02/04/2020 21:48

Well our policy isn't changing, so if people don't take it they will lose it at the end of the year anyway

JaceLancs · 02/04/2020 21:50

I’m leaving it up to my staff
We can all work from home - some people may feel they need a break during this, others want to be kept busy
I’m working longer hours than usual!
If people want leave within this holiday year when it’s over and I can manage to let them I will even if it means getting in sessional workers
Anyone who wants to can carry forward into next year
I’m personally hoping to do some of each so use 2 weeks and carry 2 forward

JustFrigginNameChange · 02/04/2020 21:58

I have 2 weeks off starting from tomorrow. After reading all these posts i regret not cancelling it, but I'm not sure my daughter's school are open during the Easter hols so i would have ended up paying for childcare somewhere
