Hmm, scone mix!

I have a packet of onion bread mix I’m eyeing up!

itssquidstella · 03/04/2020 15:37

My local corner shop has loads, but the supermarkets in town are all stripped bare!

MashedSpud · 03/04/2020 15:37

Found gram flour yesterday. I shall be making onion bhajis later.

Duckchick · 03/04/2020 15:47

@VivaLeBeaver I made rice flour pancakes last week as I had a big bag of rice flour and limited wheat flour. I used this recipe www.yummytoddlerfood.com/recipes/breakfast/banana-spinach-pancakes/ but I'm sure most American style pancake recipes would work.

It's the same here in Ireland. As soon as flour comes in it flies out of the shops. I've seen self-raising and plain, but can't get strong white flour at all.

No wholemeal, multigrain or anything else other than while. I bought some wheat germ to add to the white.

My brother, who does a lot of baking with yeast, regularly uses plain instead of strong and says it works fine.

Bought flour in Morrisons yesterday.

hiredandsqueak · 03/04/2020 16:13

I got flour in Morrisons today they had a pretty reasonable selection too. I bake a lot anyway but am baking more just to ease the boredom.

MarshmallowManiac · 03/04/2020 16:19

Bought flour this morning in Lidl.

I mean, it makes sense that if people are trying to reduce the number of trips they make to the shops that they stretch out the time between visits by making their own bread which in some households is one of the big consumables.

Plus sandwiches, cakes, pastries etc that people used to eat in cafes and takeaways are now being displaced by people making them at home. Commercial supplies do not quickly and easily divert to retail (as we learned with loo roll).

Babamamananarama · 03/04/2020 16:30

My local cafe got in some 16kg bags of bread flour so I hunted and gathered an industrial quantity today - hoping to get a sourdough starter going....

SistemaAddict · 03/04/2020 21:08

The local health shop saved the day as they included a bag of bread flour with my delivery. When I did my tesco online shop there was none available. I'm amazed at all the bread bakers that have appeared from nowhere.

PositiveLife · 03/04/2020 21:16

We wanted some so the kids could bake as a break from school work/screen time. None in the shops but a local wholesale food supplier is selling (and delivering) to individuals. Got loads of fresh fruit and eggs too.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 03/04/2020 21:32

I always have flour in but struggled to get it for a few weeks-seems like in the past few days it is back in stock most places?

LavenderLilacTree · 03/04/2020 21:37

Just to add PLEASE don't buy gluten free flour unless you have Coeliac disease.

OatMilkAddict · 03/04/2020 21:42

@slurpy - I'd love to know what to do with chickpea flour as I have half an out-of-date bag left to use. Throw me some ideas! We tried vegan Spanish omlette which was ok.

goose1964 · 03/04/2020 21:49

If you have flour but no year you can make flatbreads or sofa bread, or even scones. I have one pack of strong bread flour and yeast that I bought for stollen but I was too ill at Christmas to make it. It's going to be hot cross buns.

goose1964 · 03/04/2020 21:50

Yeast not year, this kindle has the air!s worst autocorrect

Slurpy · 03/04/2020 21:53

@oatmilkadult - ooh, well bhajis or pakoras are the obvious choice. Basically, mix gram flour with spices (cumin, tumeric, ginger, garlic, coriander, whatever you've got), add water until it's sort of double cream consistency, dunk in whatever veggies you have (cauli, sweetcorn, potato, onion work really well) and then deep fry, or bake in the oven. I also use it to coat tofu and bake in the oven (then add the tofu to stir frys). You can make veggie pancakes too (besan cheela). There's a gujarati savoury cake too, which is nice (dhokla). Will have a think and post any other ideas I have. And you can make tofu (there was something in the Guardian a few months ago) but never tried that.

I’ll second that. Ditto gluten-free pasta. Please.
