School NOT going back after Easter

Saladfingers95 · 02/04/2020 12:16

The headteacher has just phoned me to say my children's school will definitely not be back until after Easter. It will be after May half term at the earliest. I'm in the North East. Has anyone else been told the same?

Given that teachers knew no more than anyone else when the schools were going to close and indeed didn't know who was defined as a keyworker until the morning on 20th March when they did close, I can't imagine that teachers will be given much of a heads up tbh.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 03/04/2020 18:15

All textbooks have been put online free for a period of 90 days for schools to access.

Doesn’t suggest an early return to me

FourTeaFallOut · 03/04/2020 18:17

Which textbooks theemoji and where are they hiding please?

Randomschoolworker19 · 03/04/2020 18:29

We're not expecting to be back before Whit and most likely not before the summer.

EightNineTen · 03/04/2020 18:32

Since they cancelled all exams it wasn't likely schools would be going back for some time. I doubt they'll be back before September.

I think it would be pointless to increase risk at the end of May or beginning of June, just for a few weeks.

SunshineCake · 03/04/2020 18:33

I think it is very obvious schools will not be going back until the autumn but I am surprised that one parent has been phoned. It is going to take forever it all parents are being individually called..

GreenTulips · 03/04/2020 18:50

I think it’s obvious if you’ve followed the news around the world.

UK hasn’t shut the borders yet and the expected peak is May/June time so we won’t be out of the woods til August at the earliest.

See what other countries are doing

noblegiraffe · 03/04/2020 18:59

The BBC is providing 14 weeks worth of education from 20th April, which will cover the summer term.

The expected peak is Easter Sunday according to the news .

Textbooks are made by a loads of different companies. It’s up to each company if they make them free or not.

No one knows. Our head teacher, who is also an OFSTED inspector doesn’t know.

DoIHaveToAdultToday · 03/04/2020 21:52

More than likely September

DoIHaveToAdultToday · 03/04/2020 21:54

They are saying for the most vunerable people to shield for atleast 12 weeks

That brings us to July....
And they think things wont return back to normal for 6 months.

So September seems reasonable

Tootletum · 03/04/2020 21:58

Depressing.

Toothsil · 03/04/2020 22:30

Ours hasn't had any indication at all as to when they'll go back, certainly no mention of may half term - they seem to be under the impression that we're in this for the long haul.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 04/04/2020 09:28

Flamingo. I can’t say too much as don’t want to put myself. But they are available, we’ve been asked to submit which ones we want.

DICarter1 · 04/04/2020 09:48

I’ve been working on the assumption of September. I’m not sure I’d be hugely comfortable sending my kids back in June. I’d worry hugely though one of those is year 6. I worry especially when an article about someone in the local council was published in a local paper saying he had covid 19 and him and his wife had been looking after their grandchildren and his son is the bloody head teacher of our school. Ironically his wife is also a local head and they don’t share a house with his parents so I’d be concerned his kids or even himself could be carrying it. And one of my kids has a health condition.

I suspect the poor schools won’t know until the government announce it so they can only put plans in place just in case.

olivehater · 04/04/2020 09:51

The school that are planning for September don’t know anything more than the schools planning for after half term. The government want them back as soon as possible. If that’s after the half term then they will push for that if it isn’t then they won’t. But teachers saying what they are planning for makes not a jot of difference. They are not the scientists or politicians.

MarshaBradyo · 04/04/2020 09:56

No one knows but we don’t even know what the government wants either re as the comment as soon as possible and what they’ll push for.

DisgruntledGuineaPig · 04/04/2020 10:08

I wish they'd just put an announcement out so people can plan. In real life conversations I've had (online, not going out!), several local parents seem to think we'll be back after Easter holidays - the lock down is due to finish on 14th April, schools are due back on 16th April, they've assumed if not back on the 16th then the week after.

I seemed to be in the minority saying I thought after the May half term (so early June) was optimistic.

People need to plan. If they lift lockdown but keep schools closed, that's going to cause childcare issues.

DisgruntledGuineaPig · 04/04/2020 10:09

I also expect to be told we are extending lockdown. Probably being announced over the easter weekend...

BogRollQueen · 04/04/2020 10:13

Work in education.

My boss told us yesterday that the earliest date the senior management are even thinking as a possibility to reopen would be after Whitsun half term, but realistically it is more likely to be September.

FlamingoAndJohn · 04/04/2020 10:15

But that is still a guess Bogroll.

Derbygerbil · 04/04/2020 10:18

Can’t believe some people think schools will be back after, or even soon after, Easter. I expect they are the same clueless people who were saying “it’s only the flu” until we went into lockdown
