School NOT going back after Easter

Saladfingers95 · 02/04/2020 12:16

The headteacher has just phoned me to say my children's school will definitely not be back until after Easter. It will be after May half term at the earliest. I'm in the North East. Has anyone else been told the same?

Remember back a few weeks ago when everyone was freaking out at 2 week schools closure and lockdown? 😂🤣😂🤣

I would write off this whole year. Ain’t nothin going back to normal until 2021

They break up tomorrow don't they Confused

No. Because nobody knows. It doesn't matter how high up that comment came from, none of it is official information.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 02/04/2020 12:48

I teach in FE, and we were told earlier in the week that it would be after summer. (I am dying inside thinking about the thousands of students we have, classrooms that aren't quite big enough, lifts with everyone breathing on one another. It seems quite mad thinking that was the norm!)

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 02/04/2020 12:48

We've not had a grand announcment but communications from school have talked about setting up folders in GLOW or sending thing home "after the easter holidays"
So its been clear from the beginning we arent going back

Saladfingers95 · 02/04/2020 12:50

@kilisibird I've just realised my original post should have said 'not going back after Easter.' Not 'until after Easter'.

Well, it's official information to me, as she has personally told me the school will remain shut.

OP posts:
fuckinghellthisshit · 02/04/2020 12:51

our school did leavers assemblies, it'll be sept

PumpkinPie2016 · 02/04/2020 12:52

I am a secondary school teacher. No official announcement yet but to be honest, we are planning as though we will be out of school until September Sad

I hope it's earlier (say after May half term) but somehow, I doubt it.

I have just ordered some CGP books for my own son (year 1) to give us extra things to do at home as well.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 02/04/2020 12:54

We've all had an email from the welsh education minister confirming that we aren't going to be going back after easter, but it doesn't give any more details than that as they just don't know.

atotalshambles · 02/04/2020 12:55

I hate all this. No one knows - it depends on the numbers who are infected and what the next few weeks brings. We have to all wait and see how the current restrictions affect the numbers. Even Chris Whitty doesn't know. Ultimately there is a balance between the illness and the economy and decisions are made accordingly. Schools will definitely not be going back on 20/21 April per school holidays but after that it depends on the infection numbers and how the illness spreads and how the NHS is coping. Take every day as it comes.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 02/04/2020 12:56

We’ve got to get back to our HT on different ways we can deliver the curriculum after Easter.

I’ve already been doing stuff for my upcoming Y12. And for y10.

Lots more to do, but we are preparing for it even though we don’t know what’s happening.

NeurotrashWarrior · 02/04/2020 12:56

NE teacher here, we've all assumed it's sept. Though obviously some schools are open to key workers and Sen children.

Saladfingers95 · 02/04/2020 12:56

Thankyou for confirming @DrMadelineMaxwell.

Well yes, my point about it not being official was more in terms of when they will open. Your head teachers high up official doesn't know the answer to that. I thought everyone knew they would be staying closed?

Mine can't go back until after summer now anyway as we had a shielding letter arrive yesterday which take us up as far as the last week of term.

tootiredtoconga · 02/04/2020 12:57

I work in a school. My colleagues and I (including colleagues from all local schools) are working on the assumption that we will be back in September.

Really strange of the HT to phone you the day before the Easter holidays to say they won't be back until after Easter...talk about stating the obvious. Even if it is a small school I don't know any HT's who would have time to call 100 parents!

EvilTwins · 02/04/2020 12:58

Everything is speculation at the moment. Nothing is official. Anyone who says otherwise must have some kind of magic time travelling ability.

I work in FE, in a specialist setting. I am desperately hoping that we will be back before the end of the summer term. Writing off the next 5 months is just depressing.

Those of you who think that schools won't go back until September, do you think then that everything will be in lockdown til then? Because they can hardly open workplaces and keep schools closed - how will parents manage?

NeurotrashWarrior · 02/04/2020 12:59

Some schools will be able to know for certain now that they can't open till after the 12 week social distancing for those who are vulnerable as they know how many staff are doing this and know they can't operate on such low staff and supply teachers. So that takes you to the 8th June earliest opening.

Other schools will know that they have less staff doing this and may be able to operate, however in reality I can't see the official opening being any sooner, and expect it will be sept.

Disfordarkchocolate · 02/04/2020 12:59

Not heard anything but I expect this to last till September. Perhaps with some odd days before the summer for subject groups to see how home learning had gone.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 02/04/2020 12:59

I’m in the north east OP, what area are you in?

TokyoSushi · 02/04/2020 13:01

I think we all just have to plan for September (hopefully) and anything else will be a lovely little bonus!

noblegiraffe · 02/04/2020 13:01

The BBC is starting online lessons and an education TV channel after Easter.

School NOT going back after Easter
Saladfingers95 · 02/04/2020 13:04

@tootiredtoconga my op should have said not going back after Easter, not until after Easter.
And no it's not strange for her to phone me. I have a child on the SEN register, she often calls to see how we are doing etc. Maybe she isn't phoning each parent individually, I didn't ask. Would you like me to phone her back and ask if she is doing a ring round? 😂

noblegiraffe · 02/04/2020 13:05

Oh well done to Wales for providing free school meals over Easter, DrMadeline, it is unbelievably shitty that England isn’t.

Appuskidu · 02/04/2020 13:08

The ‘official’ announcement was two weeks ago saying schools were closed until further notice.

We haven’t been told anything different so the heads are just confirming parents realise nothing has changed and the schools won’t be opening after Easter. It doesn’t really need an official announcement.

MarshaBradyo · 02/04/2020 13:09

I was told by teacher September.
