Football! Tax payer furloughing back room staff so the Premier League players stay on £70,000 A WEEK

I mean, for fuck's sake!

Tottenham Hotspur, among others.

They're asking us to pay their non player staff (via the 80% thing) while their players will be paid their £70,000 a week.

Let's not forget this.

Absolutely disgusting.

megletthesecond · 01/04/2020 22:41

I couldn't quite believe it when I heard it. I thought I must have misheard.

Ladyface · 01/04/2020 22:43

It’s a bloody disgrace and as a Spurs supporter I am ashamed of the club.

itbemay1 · 01/04/2020 22:47

I was shocked when I heard this. Madness!!

LtJudyHopps · 01/04/2020 22:48

I truly hope the government or FA pull them up on this. I’m a spurs fan and it’s disgusting.

Miljea · 01/04/2020 22:48

This needs to get 'out there'

They're all over Children In Need, etc, but it appears the idea their own salaries might be hit a microscopic amount in order to pay the (in Tottenham Hotspur's case) 550 backroom staff's wage appears unacceptable.

Football is not exclusively a male sport. Obviously. But do share these facts with your Premier League football supporting partner.

When will The Premier League do their bit?

Or is this another example of the Emperor's New Clothes?

Is it an opportunity to recognise that doctors, nurses, health care assistants, radiographers, respiratory techs, pathology lab workers, hospital porters, cleaners, caterers; and delivery drivers, shop assistants,... the list goes on- are our national heroes, not fucking footballers.

Perspective.

Disgusting. Overpaid men who kick a ball about.
Shameless, entitled...

Can you tell I don't have a good opinion of these blokes?!

Defenbaker · 01/04/2020 22:56

Disgusting. I've long thought that footballers are vastly overpaid, but this really brings home the attitude of all the people who make huge sums of money from what is, basically, just a hobby.

There is so much money in the top clubs that they could easily afford to take a dip in profits for a while, but they are greedy and immoral.

AnyFucker · 01/04/2020 22:58

The world of football is utterly toxic, for sure

LuckyMarmiteLover · 01/04/2020 22:59

Disgusting/ the players need furloughing on £2,500.

Shocking.

StrawberryBlondeStar · 01/04/2020 23:02

Obscene and why the job retention scheme won’t be extended for more then 3 months (or very limited industries) - even though many companies may need it for longer

Aceventura20000 · 01/04/2020 23:12

It’s a scandal and I hope Spurs fans agree

HeIenaDove · 01/04/2020 23:12

all in this together eh?

KenDodd · 01/04/2020 23:23

It's not just football.

All industries should pay there staff, even if not attending work, the Gov scheme should be a last resort for companies. Easyjet asked for government money the day before issuing a £170 million dividend payment to shareholders. Companies with billionaires owners going cap in hand to the tax payer, while at the same time going to extraordinary lengths to avoid paying tax themselves.

I really, really hope we address inequality as a result of this, after all, we've seen which jobs and workers are really important and they're not often the best paid. Tbh I don't hold out much hope. The banking crisis did nothing to address it. The rich just got richer and the poor poorer.

MayTheGodsBeEverInYourFavour · 01/04/2020 23:24

In contrast, some clubs are going the other direction.

nancypineapple · 01/04/2020 23:27

Not just spurs-that scumbag Mike Ashley owner of Newcastle United said they were doing this on Monday too. I am never going to step foot in any store/business he owns ever again. This is surely the time for the government to stand up and protect its tax payers.

Jinx2020 · 01/04/2020 23:32

Disgusting.

shrill · 01/04/2020 23:37

Contempt once again being shown . When will supporters and the public finally say enough and vote with their pennies. After all every penny counts.

Yes i know it's a vicious circle if you with hold your money it will still be the low earners who suffer but after this surely it would help the businesses with a sense of commitment to their employees in times like this to thrive?

HeIenaDove · 01/04/2020 23:41

I too think it will be poorer people paying for the cost of all this.

On Channel 4 news tonight they did a segment showing that some are still struggling to get food.

Doyoumind · 01/04/2020 23:42

I saw this on the news and was also disgusted.

BilboBercow · 02/04/2020 01:17

I get the anger really I do. I think the players should be volunteering to take pay cuts to cover the salaries of other club staff.

The issue from the club pov is that the players are on watertight contracts. They get paid for the length of their contract regardless of if they play unless they are sold. Backroom staff, hospitality etc can be laid off quite simply.

So the clubs are doing this to keep staff on because their hands are tied with the players. Clubs in Scotland for example aren't as wealthy as the bigger clubs down south. Right now they aren't getting money in from ticket sales and months of this will push a lot of clubs to the brink of collapse.

withgraceinmyheart · 02/04/2020 08:39

As Bilbo says, players will be on watertight contracts. They'd need to give up pay voluntary. Some of them might but it's not the clubs fault if they don't.

The furloughing scheme is all about companies continuing to pay staff who would otherwise be laid off, which will apply to many people in the sport and leisure industry right now, since theirs no work for them to do.

It's completely unfair, but nothing about this situation is fair.

PertEllaTitsahoy · 02/04/2020 08:43

Yeah, I'm sure these clubs paying huge salaries simply have no money left to pay their backroom staff Hmm
