How often are you going out shopping?

Ideally I'd like to go out once every two weeks... but you can't stock up on fresh fruits and salads for two weeks! Kinda hard to eat healthily...

We're doing an online order for cupboard food plus fresh food when we can get a click and collect slot and a fresh food top up in between. It works out around once a week, but probably more like 3 times a fortnight sometimes.

ivykaty44 · 02/04/2020 06:33

I’ve found a local place doing click and collect, strict rules on collection - open boot and get back into car etc. Order yesterday and picking up today.

I’ve not been in a supermarket for over 2 weeks, neighbours & friends have been helping as I’m shielding a house member

joystir59 · 02/04/2020 06:45

Make or buy masks to wear when shopping. That's the only time you are likely to be in an enclosed space with The Virus.

Carrie7469 · 02/04/2020 06:54

I’m lucky enough to have a weekly delivery slot. My partner is extremely vulnerable and I’m also shopping for an elderly relative.

ochreheart · 02/04/2020 06:58

Every other day as I'm shopping for 2 families on the governments shielded list, plus my own. The shielded families can't get a delivery or c&c slot at all. I've contacted the big supermarkets to ask if there's any way delivery priority can be given to these people. Both families have registered with the government for help in the event I become ill. There are no other options due to any other support they might have also being vulnerable and needing support themselves or front line health workers which would expose them to a higher risk. I'm working full time (at home) and am knackered. I hope something can be worked out fir delivery priority

jelly79 · 02/04/2020 06:59

Went the super market 2 weeks ago. Been the garage twice for milk. Got a fruit and veg box coming tomorrow from the farm shop and will do a big supermarket shop next Friday. That's my plan :)

Has been a change of mindset to not be able to freely go anytime but a nice challenge really

ochreheart · 02/04/2020 07:01

With the current volume restrictions it has to be every other day so I can get enough of everything. 2 bags of pasta once or twice a week can't be shared between 9 people

usernotfound0000 · 02/04/2020 07:02

We've been lucky to have delivery slots weekly (regular online shopper) so in 2 weeks I've been to the shop once to top up on milk. We have one more online delivery next week but then all the slots have dried up so we'll be going to the shop. I'll be limiting to once a week.

Ironfloor269 · 02/04/2020 07:07

I go to Aldi once a fortnight. Aim to arrive as early as possible, so around 9am, when it's less crowded.

I buy fresh stuff to last for 2 weeks - buy as many bananas as I'm allowed to, a third ripe, a third partially ripe and a third green. The ripe ones stay in fruit bowl while the rest go in the fridge. Take them out over the next two weeks as and when needed. Satsumas last for ages in fruit bowl.

One bottle of milk go in freezer and get taken out when the fresh ones run out.

Also, one loaf of bread go in freezer and get taken out when needed.

There are only three of us at home so this way of shopping works well for us.

I used to shop once a week before this crisis started.

Bluesheep8 · 02/04/2020 07:07

Luckily I meal plan anyway so one of us goes to Aldi once per week. Although I have been calling at the green grocer in the village when I'm out on my 45 min per day walk. Not every day but maybe twice per week. I noticed they are doing deliveries though so may start doing that.

Bluesheep8 · 02/04/2020 07:12

Personally, I think supermarket delivery slots should be left for those in the shielding group who have a letter from the government where possible. Or for those who live very rurally and have no access to a shop. Their need is greater than mine. And I do make sure that calling at the green grocer is part of my daily walk.

Bluesheep8 · 02/04/2020 07:14

I sound as though I'm contradicting myself about deliveries - I meant i may consider a delivery of veg from local shop but not from a supermarket.

Oblomov20 · 02/04/2020 07:47

No delivery slots here.

peoplepleaser1 · 02/04/2020 07:52

I've had to go three times this week. I'm shopping for 7 people in 3 households who are elderly and frail as well as my own family. Restrictions to quantities and stock issues mean I can't get what is needed in one go. None of us stockpiled and every house now is using some horrid alternative to loo roll as I haven't been able to get any.

None of us have hand sanitiser and 4 of the people I'm shopping for have to access communal areas to live so desperately need it.

I hate having to shop so often, plus they looks because I have 3 bottles of milk in my trolley. But I can't get a delivery or collection slot.....

theneverendinglaundry · 02/04/2020 07:58

Family of 5 here.

I've been getting a delivery once a week and then doing 1 top up shop per week for milk, bread, fruit etc.

I have 1 more delivery on Monday and dont think I'll be able to book another after that, unless I'm extremely lucky, so may need to start going to the shop 3 times a week. We dont have a car and theres only so much you can carry home in a pully trolley.

hannah1992 · 02/04/2020 08:01

I went went shopping once last week but had to go to 2 different supermarkets. I'm ok till about monday. Family of 4. I love fruit. I've bought longer life fruits like apples, pears and oranges and stored in the fridge and they're still ok. Things like bananas I buy a big bunch, split the bunch in half then chop up and freeze the other half because the kids love fresh banana milkshake and frozen banana makes that really well. Same with strawberries and raspberries. Good way to give them some vitamins and calcium without all the added stuff

Lordfrontpaw · 02/04/2020 08:02

Every other day - for us and mil, walking. It’s ok - not too busy and the store has most things.

Holdingmybreath · 02/04/2020 08:02

Main shop once a week and once for milk.
Yesterday was a fail as I got some milk(local shop and empty)then a call from work(NHS)all my shifts have changed,I will be unable to shop for the next 3 days.Ive scoured the freezer and cupboards, made a meal plan for next week and went out again for carrots and potatoes.
Just hope I don't get Covid and there is plenty in the shops next week as we will have nothing after this.

Bestbe · 02/04/2020 08:03

Twice a week but I’m hoping to reduce that with deliveries from independent food places. I have to buy for my family of 5, in-laws, parents, uncle, aunt and uncle. Also my cousin who is ill and her family. Once she is better she can help.
The hardest thing is no one wanting to inconvenience me by not telling me exactly what they need and I have to question and guess.
On Tuesday I did a MASSIVE supermarket shop and delivered it all only for various people to ask for vital things they hadn’t mentioned.
Love them all so so much and I’ll do anything for them but I wish they wouldn’t worry about inconveniencing me and therefore inconveniencing me.

namechangenumber2 · 02/04/2020 08:03

I'm heading to the supermarket this morning, this is the first time in 2 weeks. We've managed by adding shopping to friends delivery slots.

We've got a Tesco delivery coming on Monday so I'm hoping after today there be no need to go out for another few weeks

Lordfrontpaw · 02/04/2020 08:06

Sadly ours seems to be full of pairs of large 20-30 something lads with no understanding of the 2m (even 2 feet) rule.

Themostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 02/04/2020 08:07

I have a Sainsburys delivery pass so am able to get a slot in my area. Am doing one weekly shop from them and then we have a long standing arrangement with a local farm so milk, juice, eggs, butter etc are left outside our front door twice a week. Have managed not to go to a shop since this started and intend to continue with that.

ochreheart · 02/04/2020 08:09

Yes! My friend feels like she's imposing so gives me a basic list and adds "whatever else you think"!

ilovecakeandwine · 02/04/2020 08:12

Twice a week ,
I'd go less but it's bread , milk maybe other fresh bits I'd run out of.

Bestbe · 02/04/2020 08:14

@ochreheart It’s so hard and must be incredibly difficult for them.

No one in the supermarket keeps 2 metres away. So I wrapped a scarf around my face and wore gloves. Next time I’m wearing glasses as well. Then I get home and throw everything in the wash.
I’m wrapped up like some mad second rate bank robber and then there are teenagers in shorts and T-shirt’s.
The most annoying person stood in the doorway on his bloody phone so having queued no one could get in. Absolute twat
