Going for daily walk or essential shopping with a cough ?

Really in 2 minds about this-pre existing temp conditions def not CV
But am I going to end up having to continually explain my medical history or have people having a go at me ? I’m really worried I even have a hospital appt coming up and I don’t know what to do whether to call ahead to explain in case others in the wiring room think I’m contagious it’s really making me anxious as I cough so much

I don't blame you :(
How can you be so sure you don't have it though?

Helpwithaversion · 01/04/2020 18:13

100% it’s not CV I’ve had a combination of hyperemesis and reflux since December and where I’ve been so sick it’s really damaged my throat so I cough due to that irritation plus still on medication and the sickness makes me cough then gag and the reflux makes me cough it’s really still quite bad but I can’t stifle it at all I’m just so paranoid about it
At my 12 w scan I was hauled out of the waiting room and had to explain and things weren’t even that bad at that point

I have a cough that is due to post nasal drip and reflux, had it for a few years. I have to go out tomorrow and am not looking forwards to setting foot outside my front door.

Wanderlust21 · 01/04/2020 18:17

Wtf does everyone suddenly need a 'daily walk'? Before this I might have gone for a walk/outside exercise once or twice per week, tops. And practically never on weeks when I am working. I certainly wouldn't do it AT ALL now. Out for shopping only.

If you have a cough naturally then all you need to do is say 'dont worry I've had it for years' if anyone gives you a look. No need to make a mountain out of a mole hill.

If you have a temp you don't normally have however, stay home. Just incase.

StealthPolarBear · 01/04/2020 18:17

That sounds absolutely awful

Surely though you were leaving the house, even if you didn't consider it a "daily walk"? I used to walk to and from the bus stop every day for work for example. So, I never thought "ill just go for a walk" but that was because I was out walking anyway and wasn't cooped up all the time.

ShellsAndSunrises · 01/04/2020 18:20

I'd really try and avoid it... I've been getting funny looks for hayfever, the atmosphere if you've got a cough, will be pretty bad, as people are scared.

You can't do much about the hospital appointment, just let them know when you arrive that it's not CV. They might choose to sit you elsewhere anyway, just incase. I'd get someone else to sort shopping or do a click and collect order if they're getting better in your area, and avoid the daily walk.

Helpwithaversion · 01/04/2020 18:21

Ive always gone for a walk each day as I don’t have a car ! The fresh air helps with the sickness a bit too
I’m just so worried as if I start coughing from the reflux sometimes it just triggers off the hyperemesis and I end up coughing till I gag it was bad enough before worrying about being sick in public now I’m worried I’ll have everyone assuming I’m out and contagious !

I need a daily walk because DS 7 normally runs around at school and not he isn’t so he’s going mad in the house. I walk to the park and make him run in circles for half an hour.

CodenameVillanelle · 01/04/2020 18:22

Wtf does everyone suddenly need a 'daily walk'?

Because we are missing the general activeness that comes with normal life and therefore doing a lot fewer steps by staying home. Going for a 30 minute walk every day keeps me as active as I was when I didn't go for a walk at all, just did my normal life.
We need to keep active.

PicsInRed · 01/04/2020 18:23

To replace the activity involved in leaving the house and walking, cycling or driving to work every day, then moving about the workplace all day and going out at lunch. Obviously. People are going from being moderately active to completely sedentary which is not just unhealthy but life limiting (higher likelihood of pneumonia and dvt etc).

Helpwithaversion · 01/04/2020 18:24

Yes I think with the appt I’ll call ahead as I don’t want to either worry everyone else or end up being pulled out the room again last time I was struggling to explain that I get so bad not because id been abroad anywhere but that i was coughing my guts up as I could smell the hospital canteen smells and was close to vomiting and they kept asking me and telling me to sanitise my hands after each coughing fit and the alcohol gel smell was even making it worse

The poster who asks why are people suddenly going for a daily walk?

I always walk, run or go to the gym and have done for 20 years or so. I’d say I’m pretty fit and healthy because of it and the thought of only going for a walk twice a week makes me feel sick. I’m doing less exercise by only going out for a run once a day.
Most of my friends & family also exercise regularly. This is the norm for a lot of (fit, healthy) people.

Thedogshow · 01/04/2020 18:28

But hard socially if you’re coughing OP- people will stare at you unfortunately I think.

Helpwithaversion · 01/04/2020 18:31

This is why I’m so worried I really don’t want to worry anyone and I’ve not been doing much just a walk but I can’t get everything we need on our online shop but really worried about going out and coughing in public if I go to the shops
I think with my appt I can call ahead and hopefully maybe even have a diff place to wait in as although I’m not contagious I think if I start coughing it’s going to just worry people

I consider myself perfectly fit and healthy. I use my switch and dance about my living room. 60 minutes, 4-5 days per week. I could drop it in a heartbeat though if it put me at risk if catching a virus. There are plenty of other ways to get your daily exercise that don't require going out.

cantata · 01/04/2020 18:36

Wtf does everyone suddenly need a 'daily walk'?

I can only speak for myself, but I have at least an hour's exercise outside every single day. It keeps me sane. In fact, I'd think an hour was pretty minimal, unless I was so busy I couldn't fit in more.

Thedogshow · 01/04/2020 18:37

Great, but for lots of people getting out of the house daily is essential to their mental health.

Thedogshow · 01/04/2020 18:38

Maybe you could make a badge OP?! It is hard to not be able to get outside.

Abraid2 · 01/04/2020 18:38

Before this I might have gone for a walk/outside exercise once or twice per week, tops.
Hopefully you know better now. This is a chance for healthier living with the benefit to the immune system that several doctors have been encouraging lately.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 01/04/2020 18:40

OP, you have my sympathy. I have a cough that is not Coronavirus, it's hayfever that I'll have until around September. I hate going out now and feel I have to explain if I cough.

ShastaBeast · 01/04/2020 18:45

I’ve been out coughing, I’ve been unwell for three weeks exactly and coughing for 18 days so we’ll past the 7 day quarantine. I take tissues to cough into. Post viral coughing can last many weeks so it’s going to be more common as more people catch CV and recover. We just have to maintain our distance and hygiene as before.

But even those quarantining are allowed to go out to exercise. It aids recovery and can prevent it getting worse.

Wanderlust21 · 01/04/2020 18:45

Abraid2, I live perfectly healthy thanks. I get plenty of exercise. I just dont need to do it outside. And have no intention of starting.

But yes I understand some ppl need to get out for the sake of their mental health. But my point was that people who never needed to donner about before, suddenly feel the need to. I don't get it. I mean surely its safe enough but I wouldn't bloomin chance it.

Thedogshow · 01/04/2020 18:48

Abraid I totally agree. I think it’s great to see lots of people out walking. All keeping a distance and being careful luckily where I live, but it’s such a healthy habit to get into.
I think people do realise that being unfit and having lifestyle related illnesses such as type 2 diabetes is putting them at more risk now and it has really motivated some people to get fit.
Which is important, both for themselves because they’ll feel much better and for society and the NHS.
As long as people are being responsible getting outside daily to exercise is excellent. Sorry to derail OP. I hope you work out a way to do things.
