I work in a petrol station so we are currently open for essentials / fuel.
But, I cannot believe the amount of people coming in for daily newspapers, drinks and sweets and generally browsing! Especially the older generation that don't seem to think it's serious at all.
It scares me, I have to be here but they don't. We're asking people to pay by card but most people are paying cash!
I don't want to be here and I'm terrified I'm going to take it home to my family.

Please people, stay home!!

I live opposite a convenience store and haven't set foot in it for weeks. I tend to walk to a bigger store and either walk back again or get DH to pick me up if I've managed to get a big shop in. Far less exposure, that way and saves the convenience stores and their stock for people who can't just walk a couple of km to the retail park or city centre.

My uncle has died from CV today. He doesn't socialize anyway. He takes his dog out for s walk and goes to the shops. He can only have caught it from the shop. Minimise your trips. This virus is much worse than any thing you have had before.

I didn't expect so many replies!
I would say out of all my customers this afternoon only 20% are actually buying fuel. The rest has been couple's coming in browsing, buying energy drinks / coffees.. Only a handful buying bread and milk!

Sorry, I know this has been done to death, it was a rant at the time...

@maddy68 so sorry to hear about your uncle.. This is exactly the reason I worry. People just 'popping' out don't think they'll get it.

And as for our company closing the shop and serving through the night hatch? Not a chance! Profit definitely comes before anything else!

Car usage in London is increasing because people are trying to avoid the Tube.

Imissthebeach · 01/04/2020 21:30

@iOnlyWearBlack I feel so mean saying “im bored of threads like these!” Blush of course you’re allowed to rant. The situation is nuts & we’re all losing our shit at times. (And losing our patience at those who ignore simple guidelines!)

I’m shocked that only 20% off customers were buying fuel. That’s not on. Sad

yearinyearout · 01/04/2020 22:33

It's "in the air" and "on the roads" no it bloody isn't. Honestly there's so much bullshit spouted about this. It's contact with people and with surfaces that infected people have touched that is transmitting this. So reducing the number of people you come into contact with and things that you touch is key.

Elieza · 01/04/2020 23:14

@yearinyearout - if it’s not in the air or on the roads why are great lorries and people with brushes out cleaning the roads abroad where they have it worse?

They say the droplets are tiny and light and can float in the air for a good while. For example in shops etc that people can breathe in before they fall to the ground. I imagine it must be like when you smell someone’s perfume as they go by, floating in the air, though we can’t smell it.

Thank god for yet another MN thread telling me this otherwise I would never have known!

Not sure what was meant by "on the roads" but in the air, yes it is. But for how long and how dangerous is debated.

The virus is new and so scientists seem unsure ATM, but other virus are known to be spread through the air. As it says in the link, measles for example. I think I have also read the common cold and ordinary flu in other articles?

I've just seen your post. I didn't want to scroll past and not say anything. I'm sorry for your loss

jimmyhill · 02/04/2020 01:20

couple's coming in browsing

Nobody browses in a petrol station. My guess: they haven't been able to get something they needed in the big shop. All sorts of things are missing from shelves just now. So they're looking in the little petrol station. Last time I got fuel, I looked for paracetamol. It would have looked to you like "browsing" because there wasn't any!

TheHonestTruth100 · 02/04/2020 01:58

I pop to the shops each day very briefly at a quiet time
@Babyroobs
And this is absolutely the wrong thing to do. Can't you visit a few shops in one outing to get all your essentials? Surely now the panic buying has calmed down you can buy enough food in one trip to last you a good few days.

Everytime you pop into a shop you risk getting coronavirus. Then while incubating inside of you, you risk spreading it to many others for the next 7 days you pop into a shop until you come down with symptoms and decide to remain inside.

This is one of the reasons we're told to go as infrequently as possible, because if someone did catch it on their shopping trip they'd probably come down with the symptoms before their next shopping trip and haven't gone round spreading it in the meantime.

Babyroobs · 02/04/2020 02:21

I've said I will try to reduce visits as much as possible, not sure why people have to keep going on. Have tried all evening to get supermarket delivery or even click and collect but nothing. I've got a largish family to buy for and limited funds. I'm absolutely not going to go into large supermarkets with lots of different staff where I can't maintain a safe distance. Will be sticking to small local supermarkets less frequently.

Babyroobs · 02/04/2020 02:24

And I have a face mask for what it's worth and I don't touch my face with it on.

Lalala205 · 02/04/2020 03:45

We are probably using the local petrol station more than ever tbh 😳 we're keyworkers plus shopping for 4 other family members of different households that are self isolating. I've never been so frequent in our local petrol station, but the added milage is hammering the fuel. I work 10-12hr shifts and I'm calling at the local petrol station for milk and bread every few days to supply other isolating family. Hopefully the staff don't view me as a total wanker for rocking up so often as I do 😳
