Getting fed up with the Government daily briefing

jenganinja · 01/04/2020 17:22

It feels like they are fobbing us off a bit now? I'm glad they do the briefing but who are these people today? and they just repeat the same waffle about tests and ramping things up but they are still not testing frontline NHS staff, just talking about doing it.

Yes. There is far too much coverage on TV now. Time to reign it in and just announce stuff on the 6 o clock news. The coverage in the morning is ridiculous as well.

alltripe · 01/04/2020 17:35

It’s not compulsory to watch it

EmpressMcSchnozzle · 01/04/2020 17:35

Hm, let me see, does this government have a track record of telling the truth? And do they have a track record of living in a parallel universe from the rest of us?

Did they tell the truth over Brexit? Do they tell the truth in general? Are many of them pathological liars?

Then ask yourself what makes you think there's much truth in what they're saying now. I personally wish they would put Larry behind the mike. He'd be a lot more credible.

mildlymiffed · 01/04/2020 17:36

I also want to see the cat. In a pair of glasses. At the podium.

Mrskeats · 01/04/2020 17:37

It's pointless. They don't answer anything.
If you look at Germany's stats this is not being managed properly.

MurrayTheMonk · 01/04/2020 17:38

I just slightly think they are all lying or at the very best fudging... and as a knackered key worker it makes me quite angry.

MurrayTheMonk · 01/04/2020 17:38

Larry doesn't live there any more does he?? I thought he'd been usurped by Dylan the Dog.

LolaSmiles · 01/04/2020 17:39

Not every day is going to have something new.
I dislike Boris, but on this front he can't win. If he does daily briefings people will moan, if he doesn't people will moan.

What I find more irritating are the public questions on BBC news where most of the questions seem to come down to 'I want to do X but the guidance says Y. Am I allowed to do X' and then someone, usually not from the government says, 'yes the guidelines say Y but as they don't technically say you can't do X then I guess you'd be ok'.
There's lots of people seeking validation for actions that common sense says have been covered.

The heartbreaking one today was a mother saying she is immunocompromised due to cancer so the whole family are locked down but every night she can hear her 20 year old son sneaking out around midnight to see his girlfriend in the early hours before returning. She wanted advice on how to make him see the risk he is creating for her.

jenganinja · 01/04/2020 17:40

It feels like as far as the Government is concerned, saying they are going to do something is the same as having done it. And then hope we don't notice Hmm

Marieo · 01/04/2020 17:40

@turkeyontheplate me too, I don't think them not doing that is the failure of the daily briefing though, this is a thread to gripe about that. I think people tuning in for some ground breaking revelation are going to be dissapointed, likely why they only started doing it once people were moaning.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 01/04/2020 17:40

I like the daily briefing because I've decided that I can realistically start drinking when it comes on.

Could have a game - take a drink every time someone 1) avoids a question 2) says "testing is very important"

jenganinja · 01/04/2020 17:41

Not every day is going to have something new.

Sadly there is something new today though, over 500 deaths Sad

FfsCorona · 01/04/2020 17:44

All they keep saying is how well everyone is doing staying home.... where about. All I see, hear and read is people ignoring it 🤷‍♀️

Innitogether · 01/04/2020 17:44

I don’t mind the briefings. I think if we weren’t updated daily people would complain about that. Today the business secretary sent a very clear message to banks that they need to help small businesses, even saying that it would be “completely unacceptable for banks to unfairly refuse funds to good businesses in financial difficulty”... Just as the taxpayer bailed the banks out in 2008 it’s time for banks to everything they can to repay the favour and support people in the UK in their time of need”.

It also gives an opportunity for press questions (whether answered adequately or not). They answered a question posed on MN today about whether people have noticed increased traffic on the roads and they confirmed that personal car journeys have increased, public transport journeys have decreased.

Honestly, they’re damned if they do and damned if they don’t.

jenganinja · 01/04/2020 17:46

Honestly, they’re damned if they do and damned if they don’t.

Not so. Everyone wants them to do the press briefings, just stop trying to fob people off, answer the questions asked, and sort out the tests for frontline staff that they have promised but not delivered.

OP posts:
Innitogether · 01/04/2020 17:49

(I don’t mean someone on MN posed the question)

Also, and more importantly, as @EndoplasmicReticulum says, the briefing also signals cocktail hour... chin, chin

Mlou32 · 01/04/2020 17:51

Well people would be complaining if the government weren't keeping in touch with the public. It seems that they have been damned if they do, damned if they don't at every step of the way during this whole situation.

Bluntness100 · 01/04/2020 17:51

I quite like them but recognise that often not much has changed in twenty four hours, so little to say in terms of different answers, but I appreciate rhe effort.

jenganinja · 01/04/2020 17:52

Quite a good idea to get questions directly from MN innittogether Wink

OP posts:
IpeartreeI · 01/04/2020 17:53

"Tests are coming, PPE is coming".......same old shite every evening. I expect they'll do the same when a vaccine comes out.

WhatTiggersDoBest · 01/04/2020 17:57

I think this last one was a particular waste of time but to be fair, aren't a bunch of the cabinet off sick right now with CV? If they're going to get Dave from the janitor department to do the briefing, he's not going to be able to answer the proper questions. I doubt anyone tells him what's going on.
I do wish they would just get on with the testing though and stop arsing around flapping their hands.

handbagsatdawn33 · 01/04/2020 18:00

I'm fed up with the repetitive advert on TV by The Speaking Cod.

Who thought he had the persona to get a message across?

TheLadyAnneNeville · 01/04/2020 18:03

Boris Bullshit... and in his absence, anyone they can get in to spout the same party line. The figures and graphs shown mean very little because we’re not testing as we should be. We don’t know infection rates, true death rates. So many people are dying at home. I think if they told us what’s actually about to happen/is actually happening...there’d be rioting in the streets.

The reason they will test “workers” is to get them back on the frontline job only to expose themselves again without the effective PPE.

esjee · 01/04/2020 18:05

I think they're really struggling with putting in place enough testing, staff and ventilators and I feel like they're losing their grip on this and know it, but can't do anything about it. Also people are flouting the lockdown rules. They at least need to enforce lockdown more strongly while they get their shit together or I see this going very bad very quickly.

FaFoutis · 01/04/2020 18:06

They are the opposite of information. The woman doing the slogans and charts today was rubbish. Also the new design of the slogan looks like a sticker from a lego truck.
The only one I trust is Jenny Harries.
