I'm freaking out Sad

We have two week old in house too. What do I do? Just calpol? Call 111?

MajesticWhine · 01/04/2020 00:59

Calpol and don't panic. I doubt there is a need to call 111 based on what you have said.

littlemissmuffins · 01/04/2020 01:02

I'm not a healthcare professional, so regrettably I can't help you.

Understand how scared scared you must be though.

Very uneducated guess - give calpol, see if fever reduces relatively soon. Watch them very regularly for any signs of difficulty breathing

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be around to help soon

YourWinter · 01/04/2020 01:35

Calpol, sponge with tepid water, and fan (with folded paper if you don't have a fan). Sips of water. Don't panic, hope you get some sleep.

newmumagainn · 01/04/2020 01:59

I did panic and called 111. Got through straight away and had a call back from doctor within five mins.
Advice was to keep eye on him, monitor temperature, give calpol regularly, plenty of fluids, and call back if anything changes.

Blizzardwhizard · 01/04/2020 02:05

Do not sponge child down

This is not recommended and the child can go into shock

You was worried and ring 111....
Your mum, people on here aren't always right.
Trust your instincts

newmumagainn · 01/04/2020 04:32

He had convulsions and they sent an ambulance and he's now on his way to hospital with DH, no obvious cause of temperature so they need to check him out. Had two paramedics in the house and now he's going to be exposed to all the hospital germs.

I can't keep my worry under control and I'm so so sad that I'm not with him.

OP posts:
MrsP2015 · 01/04/2020 04:54

Your first instincts were right.
He's going to be checked by professionals and has dad with him.
You have no choice but to stay with your newborn hun.

Can't really offer much but I hope he's ok.

newmumagainn · 01/04/2020 04:57

@MrsP2015 Thank you, it's just a mums worst nightmare isn't it. He hasn't got a car seat that fits in the ambulance so he's had to be strapped into a chair and looked so worried and sad Sad

How frightening I'm so sorry your going through this

EastCoastDamsel · 01/04/2020 05:11

Totally understand how frightening this situation must be for you. DS (now 10) had febrile convulsions a few times and multiple hospital admissions between the age of 13months and 2 years for them. The doctors and nurses know what they are doing and he really is in the best place, and has his daddy with him.

Hope you manage to get some rest. Flowers

Sugarhouse · 01/04/2020 05:22

Bless you I know how horrible it is not to be with them. My 2 year old son spent 4 nights in hospital a few weeks ago and I couldn’t stay with him as I had to be at home with my breastfed baby.I hope he’s better soon and if it is corona virus he’s very young so actually probably the best age group to get it. I hope he’s better soon op and I know easier said than done but try not to worry too much he’s in the best place

tappitytaptap · 01/04/2020 05:27

Ah OP I know how frightening convulsions are, DS1 has had 7. Doctors are fairly relaxed about them generally as they see lots, which made me feel better, but I think absolutely terrifying as a parent and I still worry even though it’s been a while since the last one. He is in the best place, and A&E drs told me that most are caused by tonsillitis or other throat or ear infection. Most times DS has had them it wasn’t obvious to us what the problem was but drs checked him out and had really red throat/ears. Hope he is OK soon.

Turtletotem · 01/04/2020 07:46

How is your little one doing now? Hoping all is ok x

ThelmaDinkley · 01/04/2020 16:08

Hope your little one is ok and feeling better OP Flowers

Quartz2208 · 01/04/2020 16:14

yes chances are its another virus that just needs to be controlled with calpol

Hope he is home with you

newmumagainn · 01/04/2020 17:52

He is home. They couldn't check for tonsillitis as can't look in mouth due to corona risk. He has got worse over the day, not eating, crying, pale, temperature is 39 with calpol.
I called my GP this afternoon and they said to
Call 999. Called 999 and they will get paramedics to call me back but it's been an hour and a half wait so far.

You know when your child is unwell and I know he is unwell and I don't know how to help him.

2 weeks old temp is slightly high now too. Tried to call 111 but wait time so long and didn't want to miss call prom paramedic

OP posts:
kimlo · 01/04/2020 17:58

how high is the 2 week olds temp?

A baby under 3 months with a raised tepm.erature needs to be seen.

Ukholidaysaregreat · 01/04/2020 18:08

Hi OP if you are really worried and the paramedics aren't coming you can drive to A and E yourself if you have transport. Hope you are O. K.

newmumagainn · 01/04/2020 19:04

111 called me back, I think 999 must have redirected to them. She was helpful. Out of hours doctor calling in the hour to hopefully prescribe antibiotics for the 2yo.
The 2 week old temp when I last took it was 37.4, it's usually 36.4 ish. He had been cuddled before that so i think he feels cooler now he's in Moses basket will take temp again shortly.

I'm so anxious for the night time, when DS1 was waking up he was screaming and shouting and panicked- it was the worst sound. My husband is sleeping on sofa bed next to his cot but I still got down there before he had picked him up. I'm going to be listening out for it all night and worried about more convulsion. Calpol isn't bringing his temperature down at all

OP posts:
greathat · 01/04/2020 19:23

My Ds has been admitted a couple of times with high temps that wouldn't come home. They then work out the max paracetamol based on body weight so he got to have more.

helpthismama · 01/04/2020 19:59

My 11 month old started with a high temp on sat (was slightly off colour Thursday onwards) and on Sunday night it was up at 39.8 and calpol didn't bring it down, his lips went blue and he was breathing fast. 111 sent an ambulance who took us in. By the time we got to hosp temp was over 40. He was shivering away. They brought his temp down by giving ibuprofen / Calpol based on weight and took bloods which came back clear. Throat and ears were red so said it's upper respiratory and since he took some fluid there they sent us home with the caveat to take him back if he worsened / didn't get better within 48 hours.

His Temp was still up yesterday and he was just crying or sleeping. He cried all morning today and then slept 4 hours which is very very unusual for him. He was ready for bed after 3 hours awake which I wouldn't have expected either. His temp is better now though although he just seems absolutely miserable.

Follow the advice and your instincts; hopefully our babbas will be fine!

helpthismama · 01/04/2020 20:01

Oh I've found ibuprofen has been working better than calpol in this scenario too. Hosp said to give ibuprofen too, even if it's corona they said it's more important to keep temp down and make them comfortable as possible so they eat and drink.

My 11mo has hardly ate anything for days and he wasn't drinking well either but enough to stay hydrated.

MrsP2015 · 01/04/2020 22:49

As pp said, my dd had a temp of 38.6 2 hours after calpol. I'd usually give nurofen but chicken pox was going around nursery and I was too worried to but dr said give it (after seeing dd) and it brought it down in about 30-45 mins.

I'm not suggesting you give it on this advice but ask 111 as I find nurofen is better at bringing down temps.

Really hope they're both ok.

Megan2018 · 01/04/2020 22:57

My 6 month old baby had a temp (38-39.5) for 3 days last week, 111 weren’t overly concerned. Fever in itself isn’t dangerous, so a temp of 39 without convulsions is ok, we were told to only medicate if she was distressed by it. So at times we alternated calpol and ibuprofen which did work.

Odds are he’ll be fine within 72hrs (hospital consultant told me most baby/toddler temps go within 72) - my baby was ok after 60. Bloody horrible nonetheless and now we are in 14 day isolation as a result. Try not to panic.

crazymare20 · 01/04/2020 23:12

I had to take my 21 month old son to the hospital early hours of Saturday morning on the advice of 111. He started with a temp the night before and 24 hours later it was 39.3 after calpol and he was shaking. He was given ibruprofen which brought his temp down. He was coughing a little as well. Dr heard some cracking sounds on his left lung so prescribed antibiotics, he was also swabbed for coronavirus which came back negative. He had a temp for 72 hours. He wouldn’t eat or drink but he’s back to his normal self today. Keep an eye on his temp and I’m sure he will be fine. There is some nasty bugs going around other than coronavirus.
