At least 4 of my neighbours seem.tp be carrying on as normal. Gardener / decorator/ Argos worker and another self employed neighbour ( can't say the name of the company as too outing ). I feel like I've been inside my home forever - am I right to be pissed off or are they in some way essential key workers

I thought the rule was you r allowed to work if you can't work from home (?)

Bagelsandbrie · 31/03/2020 18:03

You don’t need to be a key worker to continue to work. Just that you can’t work from home. Working from home is something a lot of people just can’t do.

Sharkyfan · 31/03/2020 18:06

Yes
As above - rightly or wrongly, it’s not just keyworkers who are allowed to still go to work.

kilisibird · 31/03/2020 18:11

Surely they are just people going to work because their jobs are open and they need to work?

Mamalicious16 · 31/03/2020 18:13

You can probably tell I'm climbing the walls. I'm.a teaching assistant for 2 agencies and, as DD school doesn't class me as a key worker, she's not going to.school. also I'm.not getting paid or having any adult contact. I might be going slightly mad...

They can’t work from home, so they are allowed to go to work.
Our window cleaner was working yesterday, and practiced social distancing, so that was fine and I was happy that he could earn some money (and now I can stare out the window without getting annoyed about the dirt, whilst working from home myself).

DartmoorChef · 31/03/2020 18:16

Gardener works outdoors, usually alone.. Cant see a problem with that.

Decorator.. If hes doing an outside or an empty house..

Argos.. They are still taking orders for click and collect

kilisibird · 31/03/2020 18:19

Kills- my job is open and I need to work...

But you have just said it is your own personal circumstances that are preventing you from working. Not the classification of your or anybody else's job.

SavoyCabbage · 31/03/2020 18:36

My agency has contacted us to say we can go straight to work in care homes if we want as we already have an DBS.

Also, we are getting self employed furlough starting this Friday.

WorraLiberty · 31/03/2020 18:39

Kills- my job is open and I need to work...

But you can't and they can.

Mamalicious16 · 31/03/2020 20:33

Savoy - can I ask what you do and did the agency apply for you

Can joiners go out to work then? I thought unless the job was essential you couldn't work?

Drivemybluecar · 31/03/2020 20:38

I’m a housekeeper and I’m still working. The rule was if u can’t work from home and still need to work you can work

Igotthemheavyboobs · 31/03/2020 20:42

Isn't the issue you not having childcare though?

joystir59 · 31/03/2020 20:46

Cleaner in an essential service, still working, wouldn't get paid if I didnt

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 31/03/2020 20:47

I thought Boris said IF you can’t do your job from home, you can go to work? You don’t have to be a key worker just be unable to work from home

SavoyCabbage · 31/03/2020 20:54

I'm a supply teacher.

I had an email yesterday that said
"If you are no longer working or receiving pay because of the outbreak of COVID-19 and you would like to apply to be Furloughed (Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme), then please complete the form by clicking on the button below: "

Then one today that said
"his email is confirmation that following your application you have been successfully registered for the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme funded by the UK Government.Furlough payments will be processed weekly in arrears and will commence this week. You will, as normal, receive a text and an email containing a link to your payslip. The calculation of the payment is complicated, but in summary it is in most cases 80% of your taxable earnings this tax year divided by the number of weeks you have been employed over the tax year. The maximum amount payable is £2500 a month (576.92 per week). We have a large volume of calculations to do, so although we are hoping that your first payment will credit your bank account this Friday, it may not be possible in which we will make the payment as soon as we can. While furloughed you will not accrue holiday pay on the payments made and the minimum wage legislation is not applicable. The minimum period you can be furloughed is 3 weeks.Due to the high volume of calls we are currently experiencing we would ask that you bear with us at this difficult time and contact us by email"

My oh works in a factory and he is still in, at the moment people can still work if they can’t work from home.

Ditto - that's what I thought too. But other people are saying different.

You’re confusing two things.

You can go out to work if you can’t wfh.

Only key workers can send kids to school.

whitesoxx · 01/04/2020 00:41

If you can't work from home you can go to work as long as your place of work is still open.

The key worker list related ONLY to school childcare provision

So yes, the joiner can work whilst practicing social distancing

timtamtam · 01/04/2020 00:42

The rule about essential is for shops and businesses open to the public

Neves7 · 01/04/2020 03:54

@SavoyCabbage I’m not eligible so I don’t know for sure but I don’t think that’s how the scheme works... You might want to double check to be sure that’s legit.

Thepigeonsarecoming · 01/04/2020 03:59

@Mamalicious16 if someone isn’t a key worker but cannot work from home they have to choose to between not getting paid or going to work. But feel envious of them, feel some sympathy instead. I’m sure they’d rather stay home paid if they could
