Do you think it will take a few years to recover at least when this is over?

Gronky · 31/03/2020 18:09

It's not affected my salary but, given that my work involves control of other diseases, it might be hard to secure future funding for a while.

zelbazinnamon · 31/03/2020 18:10

No difference to us as I’m a SAHM and DH is in the NHS, only issue is if our tenant can’t pay the rent - although presume we might be able to get a mortgage holiday in that case. DH doing extra shifts anyway just in case.

Roomba · 31/03/2020 18:12

It's not affected me at all (yet). Still being paid for my P/T job as working from home. It's a civil service job so unlikely to end any time soon. In fact I may be slightly better off due to UC payments going up temporarily? Not that that will negate all the extra I will have to spend on electric, gas and more expensive brands of food over the next few weeks/months.

cowfacemonkey · 31/03/2020 18:14

In the immediate term we are fine as I am furloughed on 80% pay. DH self employed so no income until government handout in June but we have some savings (I feel very, very lucky it's the first time in 20 years that we have had any savings). Just been refunded £1500 for ds1's cancelled school trip so that helps.

Not spending any money at all other than food and household bills so our outgoings are considerably less. I think we will feel it more in the long term but for now I appreciate other people's circumstances are by far worse so I'm not going to complain about any of it from a financial stand point.

Runwayqueen · 31/03/2020 18:15

I've 'apparently' been furloughed today, although I've not heard that formally from the company. I won't be spending on fuel or lunches so although I'm worse off its nothing drastic.

DP has taken a 'voluntary' pay cut of 20%. He is a mix of WFH and covering some of the operational needs.

We are both in aviation. I'm more worried about whether I'll even return to work given the state of the industry.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 31/03/2020 18:16

Immediate money is fine

Dh pension is fucked but hopefully that will get better over the years...eventually

I am worried about ds1 graduating and struggling to find a job

I think the economy and my family are going to struggle...but we are in a better position than many people

SimonJT · 31/03/2020 18:20

I’m working from home and actually get paid over time (I would usually do four short days a week), I moved my investments about two weeks ago so that has prevented them falling in value too much.

My boyfriend however has been laid off, he’s living here now but I’m paying his rent/council tax and any expenses. He has attempted to claim UC but as it’s based on your previous years earnings it looks like he won’t get anything. My company are short staffed so we’re hoping my employer will give him some freelance work.

Chickoletta · 31/03/2020 18:27

We will be better off. Teacher and a vet so salaries unaffected. I am wfh so no commuting costs and not going out means that I am not spending money frivolously on meals out, going for drinks etc.
We managed to complete on our house sale last week but won’t be able to complete on our purchase until the summer. In the meantime we’re staying in a friend’s holiday let which would otherwise be empty. We are paying her 20% more than she asked for but will still save money every month by not paying council tax, bills etc. Feeling very lucky indeed.

Pinksaffire · 31/03/2020 18:28

We are better off. I work for the NHS and my husband is working from home with full pay. We both have job security and are currently about £1000 a month better off due to no after school/ breakfast club costs and only using 1 car.
We realise we are incredibly lucky to be in this situation compared to some of our friends and family .

Craiglang · 31/03/2020 18:30

We're ok. I am being paid although not at work. My job is secure. DH is able to WFH but his work is commission with a base salary and there won't be any opportunities to earn commission while everything else is shut down. We can survive on the base salary but that's it, just survive. No extras, watching the pennies, and being very careful. I expect the next few years to be really tight. We had planned to take our first holiday in over a decade - a caravan holiday at the beach with the kids - but that's gone out the window. It'll be a few more years now before we can afford that again. But if that's our only issue, we've been extremely lucky.

blue25 · 31/03/2020 18:31

Also fortunate to be better off as both still on full pay, working from home. No commuting costs, lunches/coffees out etc.

Ilovejammies90 · 31/03/2020 18:31

At this time were better off. DH job is busy and wfh on normal wage +bonus
My job is busy but mostly sorting out our buisness response to covid19 I imagine as the next few weeks unfold my role and need for my role may dwindle.

We have placed a large % of our staff on furlough on 100% pay and I wont be surprised if my own role goes that way

No childcare costs. Cant remember when I last drove. But seem to spend loads at the supermarket and not stockpiling.

Expect it all to change though and dont trust my job is secure

Nuttyaboutnutella · 31/03/2020 18:34

We've not been affected financially yet as DP is working from home and as his job involves websites for education and such, he's actually got more work on as a lot has gone to virtual learning. I'm a SAHM to two little ones anyway.

I appreciate we're in a better situation than some.

ListeningQuietly · 31/03/2020 18:39

Clearly not many

sportspeople (pro and semi pro)
performers (theatre, dance, music, everything else)
builders (and related trades)
hospitality staff
event organisers
leisure industry (gyms and all related)
gardeners / horticultural trade

people on MN
interesting

rottiemum88 · 31/03/2020 18:42

Quite a lot better off at the moment due to saving on childcare, commuting costs and our dog walker's fees. Also fortunate to both have secure jobs that we can do from home for the foreseeable future. My DM is a key worker and not in great health, but can't afford to give up work altogether. Her employer is going to allow a period of unpaid leave so we'll use the spare money we have to support her until she can return.

Muddlingalongalone · 31/03/2020 18:54

So far not affected financially possibly slightly better off tbh. Variable rate mortgage, no wraparound care costs, no coffee/breakfast/lunch costs, no trips out at the weekend etc.
On the flip side I am working full time & trying to keep the kids learning & entertained alone.
Not sure what the future will bring - industry struggling, centralisation already starting, gov't job retention schemes on the horizon so might be furloughed soon....I think we're a good org & will still pay 100% not just the 80% supported by Gov't but who knows...

mrshoho · 31/03/2020 19:04

Yes and trying not to panic. DH stopped working on Friday as is in the shielded group. He's self employed so last pay check was friday. I'm a teaching assistant and still being paid but obviously it's hardly anything. The gov money should be coming in June and we've made a UC application this week but who know if this will be accepted and when the money will be paid. We've got direct debits due and have been trying to sort out a mortgage holiday and also a car loan deferment. We have a small amount of savings to get us through the next couple of weeks but after that? We've got 2 teens who we are trying to remain positive for but it's a scary time both health and financially. And I know we are in a better position than some as at least the gov cash will be coming.

waterjungle · 31/03/2020 19:18

Winter2020
We have already exchanged before this happened. The mortgage is just in my husbands name and is a little over the amount we currently pay in rent. We did it this way to ensure I could establish myself as freelance without pressure.
I was building up my freelance clients and starting to work and get my confidence up.
I suppose in that respect we are lucky but I think when this is over I will have to change careers as we won't have that breathing space anymore. Christ knows what i will do as my current profession is all I have ever known or wanted to do....

BrieAndChilli · 31/03/2020 19:27

I’ve been furloughed so on 80% pay. Luckily the fact we aren’t spending loads on petrol, school dinners, school trips etc, and normal activities on weekends etc cancels it out so hopefully we shouldn’t be too badly affected

Obviously it depends on how long this all goes on for and whether the government will keep paying the 80%

DH is wfh but is classed as a key worker as his company provides a critical part for telecommunications systems so his companies income stream is fairly secure as the are on maintenance contracts with all the big phone companies.

happytoday73 · 31/03/2020 19:29

One wage down currently.. So 40% of normal house income. Works as contractor through umbrella company.. Which seems to fall through the cracks between 2 systems even though PAYE. 🙄

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 31/03/2020 19:38

I moved my investments about two weeks ago so that has prevented them falling in value too much

Dh thought about doing this...but didnt

He is really pissed off and trying not to think about it Grin

Salene · 31/03/2020 19:39

The arse has fell out the price of oil so I imagine my husband will be made redundant in next 3 months

We are only just the other side of a redundancy from last oil crash , he was unemployed 2016-2017

We will be ok though as have decent savings, but it's not a ideal situation of course.

confusedandtired99 · 31/03/2020 19:39

Yup 👍

IndieTara · 31/03/2020 19:40

The pay rise and bonus I was due to get have been cancelled but I still have a job and can wfh

tentative3 · 31/03/2020 19:40

We're fine currently, both still working and getting paid. In the mid/long term I don't know if DP's job will survive. Mine should but I'm still nervy.
