Remember when we lost our collective shit about stockpiling?

Turns out it was us

Shortages in the shops were mostly caused by everyone buying a very little more, not hoarders buying large amounts, according to Kantar.

Moregruel guess you’ll be showering the 💩 off, it’s true. If you’re in a position to help others financially then you do it. I may have been a doom monger for the last few months but I think many of my friends and family are grateful for the relentless droning on about buying in supplies. Oh and yes, we donated to the Foodbank too. 😘

CloudyVanilla · 31/03/2020 12:02

@Hannah021 fucking hell it's a roll of toilet paper not the crown jewels Hmm I do despair at the judgement and self righteousness this situation has brought about. I don't know anyone in real life who acts or talks this way but it is absolutely rife on social media/the internet.

gizmo · 31/03/2020 12:04

+1 from me @cloudyvanilla. I know this is terrifying and stressful for a lot of people but I really don't understand what they get from attacking other people.

Flaxmeadow · 31/03/2020 12:08

Yes agree OP and also some of the photos we saw in the media of trolleys full of toilet roll etc might have been people who work in care homes or similar. A friend of mine had to supermarket shop for the large care home she works in.

TheReelSlimShady · 31/03/2020 12:16

It's not just people shopping for their immediate needs as well, there are many people who will be shopping for family / neighbours etc. So if I have a trolley full as a single person I can assure it's not just for me.

But can't do wrong for doing right at the moment!

Chista · 31/03/2020 12:17

You only have to look at the increased food waste in bins to know that some people did indeed unnecessarily stockpile. There is a difference between planning and stockpiling and what I saw when I went to Tesco was a lot of people buying unnecessarily- who needs 15 loaves of bread, 10 packs of pasta and 20 6 pint bottles of milk - appreciate there may be large families out there but I do think that this is too much.
We bought what we needed to buy and didn't purchase extra because we were mindful that us buying extra would mean that someone, possibly a vulnerable or elderly person, would be left without.

Shockers · 31/03/2020 12:23

It’s flour that we can’t buy here now- but the bread aisle is bursting and there are trolleys piled high with reduced stuff. I think Booths will then under order baked goods, and order more flour- so the whole thing will be repeated in a week or so!

SonjaMorgan · 31/03/2020 12:25

@chista there were reports that those bins were outside student accommodation and the waste was from students leaving. Most of the items we couldn't get were pasta, tinned goods, toilet roll...none of which has a short shelf life.

Hannah021 · 31/03/2020 12:27

@CloudyVanilla people have been stealing from the NHS toilet rolls and hand sanitisers...!!
stealing toilet rolls has to be the joke of the month when a cheaper alternative exists... had that company been yours, you'd be mad at them, but it's not your budget to care, so at least don't defend it.

MoreGruel · 31/03/2020 12:33

lol you stole a toilet roll from work, and you have the audacity to call people selfish? Believe me, I'd rather be selfish than a thief. Shame on you.
You could use water to clean yourself and pat dry with a towel, nothing justifies being a thief.

Alright Javert, keep your moustache on. If you really think taking one loo roll out of a bag of 100 from an office which is closed for the next 12 weeks is more morally reprehensible than taking food from the mouths of NHS workers and the vulnerable and elderly because you care more about making sure you have spares than making sure everyone has enough to live on then that’s fine; we just have very different moral codes.

its2019ffs · 31/03/2020 12:43

@moregruel you've contradicted yourself there calling people selfish for buying 2 pasta and yet you thieving from your workplace, everyone is struggling but I doubt everyone is thieving things

MoreGruel · 31/03/2020 12:47

Yeah, it’s a shame that the financial security of the Fortune 500 company I work for is completely dependent on me not taking home a toilet roll which I would otherwise have used in the office anyway, isn’t it? All 2,500 employees’ livelihoods at stake because instead of having 100 loo rolls in the cupboard of a locked office for 12 weeks, there will only be 99. I hang my head in shame; truly, the guilt I feel towards the victims of my heinous crime knows no bounds.

DesLynamsMoustache · 31/03/2020 12:58

@MoreGruel You're a monster

Haffiana · 31/03/2020 13:10

I haven’t been able to buy loo roll since 13 March. I had to nick an industrial sized roll from work.

The epitome of self-serving from someone complaining about 'other' people being self-serving.

Hypocrite. Utter, bloody shameless hypocrisy.

MoreGruel · 31/03/2020 13:13

@DesLynamsMoustache I know - an irredeemable fiend Grin

kazza446 · 31/03/2020 13:26

My weekly shop ordered for tomorrow is colossal, but there’s 6 of us at home, including 2 teenagers. 3 of the 4 children used to have school meals daily. It’s a nightmare at present as I’m having to watch everything the children eat. The 2 teenage boys are forever lurking in the cupboards. I have just had a new kitchen, (almost finished), so I had run my stocks down. 3 of our household also have asthma so we are limiting any outside interaction. I’ve done a large shop, not because I’m greedy but because I need to make sure it lasts us a week. We would often pop out midweek to stock up. Kids would also pop into town after school for a snack. Ive also added some bits for my elderly in-laws who can’t get out and don’t use technology. I’ve just spent a scary amount 😩😩 And almost feel guilty for it.

madcatladyforever · 31/03/2020 13:27

I bought a box of 6 loo rolls from an online shop called Nisbets, I thought they were normal size vastly over priced loo rolls but I was desperate so I had to.
This giant box turned up on the doorstep with 6 enormous industrial sized rolls and I realised I have enough loo roll for the next 10 years.
I have a bathroom trolley that just about holds them all lined up.
So I didn't mean to stockpile but did accidentally.
They may still be selling them if you are quick.

Chista · 31/03/2020 13:28

@SonjaMorgan I was going by what I have seen not what is in the press

Omashu · 31/03/2020 13:29

I knew this all along. I didn’t see anyone panic buying! I just figured everyone was doing a proper weekly shop. Lots of people don’t do weekly shops and just buy day to day or just get a few days of shopping in.

SonjaMorgan · 31/03/2020 13:29

@Chista what you have seen? I hope your aren't going through people's bins!

Omashu · 31/03/2020 13:30

Oh and people are also buying more food to eat at home because they’re working at home and have more children at home!

madcatladyforever · 31/03/2020 13:30

Flour however evades me - there is no flour anywhere.

EmpressMaudie · 31/03/2020 13:35

and those who couldn’t afford to I sent them money.

"I’d bet my last loo roll on this being a lie."

I think she was joking, Moregruel.

SecondRatePony · 31/03/2020 13:35

The good news is that some supermarkets seem to think the worst is over...

The media have done really well at getting ordinary people to blame each other rather than looking to government/ leaders.
