When do you honestly think it will happen? And when do you want it to happen?!

By who, BarbedBloom? Even the government don’t know how this is going to pan out.

fatimashortbread · 01/04/2020 20:27

The First Minister (Scotland) has said that the school here are unlikely to open until August which is our normal return to school time after the summer holiday.

Ronnie1234 · 01/04/2020 20:27

Wales are going ahead with 6 week summer holiday
I don't think schools reopening will be discussed until we've peaked, plateaued &!heading lower

123456abcd · 01/04/2020 20:28

September

CallmeAngelina · 01/04/2020 20:28

Pomegranatepompom No it absolutely was not sarcastic, although reading it back I can see why you might think so. Sorry.

Jessy19861 · 01/04/2020 20:36

But government are saying we are going to have a second round of this virus later on. Ie in September during hay fever month.
I reckon we will go back in October/ November time.

Schoolchoicesucks · 01/04/2020 20:38

Furloughed employees shouldn't be working. But many will be supervising the home-learning for multiple children that the teachers are sending or delivering. And will have had to accept a pay reduction.

And many non-furloughed employees will still be trying to do the juggling of supervising children, working from home AND have had to accept a reduced salary (or face the real risk of their employer going under).

In my role, there are 2 weeks in every month that I cannot take leave and 4 months of the year where I can't take leave. I can't roll any unused leave over to the next year.

It's shit for teachers right now. It's normally shit for teachers and worse now. But it's also shit for all of us. And we all need to be a bit flexible.

I know that a lot of teachers are going above and beyond right bow for the pupils and families in their schools. I also know that teachers get a lot of crap and have to fight to preserve their rights. But on this thread, there are some who don't seen to look around and see how what it's like for everyone else right now and fighting for those hard won rights at this time is colour blind.

Scotland’s new school year starts in June and we been told today expect them back til August

Lianepl · 01/04/2020 20:43

Teachers do get paid over the holiday period; however they do not get paid for the holidays - the amount they are paid is simply spread across 12 months.

starlight13 · 01/04/2020 20:44

Think they will go back around the beginning of June and possibly shorten the summer holidays to 4 weeks to compensate. We are a teacher and nurse and are paid for holidays anyway. There has to be some time back at school before September to sort out the children moving up etc. This academic year is basically a right off so it will purely be for economic reasons and perhaps only certain year groups such as year 6s return for those last few weeks. I cannot see schools being totally closed for as long as until September, there will be no medical or economic benefit to that.

SugarSugarShimmy · 01/04/2020 20:46

@starlight13 as a teacher it’s write off!

PixiePowered · 01/04/2020 20:46

Kayagh the Scottish school year runs August to June.

We received an email today saying our hub (in Scotland) had completed their rota of volunteers to June and that we would start our reports soon. We aren't making plans to be back before the summer holidays but that doesn't mean we won't be.

DBML · 01/04/2020 20:49

It doesn’t matter how many times people here say ‘you have to make a sacrifice’ or ‘you need to be flexible’....teachers will not be expected to work over the 6 week summer holiday.

There really is no discussion. It can not and will not happen.

PixiePowered · 01/04/2020 20:51

I have also heard colleagues talk of changing the school year period to mimic other countries (the names of which I can't remember).

Essentially the school year will run January to December but holidays will remain the same - Easter, summer, October and Christmas. We do the same activities at the same time but don't progress until January again.
If implemented it would mean all children return back to their stage at present, make up for the lost learning and then complete the year and move on. Exams could be rescheduled to November time.
Nursery children would stay at nursery and go through their inductions towards the end of the year.

In a lot of ways it seems to work, no one is disadvantaged in terms of missing out, things are bumped by 6 months across the board and they stay that way until it becomes the new norm.

Tulipstulips · 01/04/2020 20:54

There really is no discussion. It can not and will not happen.

So glad the Minster for Education has popped in to clarify that for us.

Tulipstulips · 01/04/2020 20:55

Minister

Bewareoftheblob · 01/04/2020 20:55

They won't change the summer holidays... it just won't happen.

I suppose there's a possibility they could ask (English) schools to open for a month from June to July but I don't think they will. Scotland will just stay closed till August.

Bewareoftheblob · 01/04/2020 20:57

@Tulipstulips

Schools are still open. Teacher are either in school at the moment or are teaching remotely. Teachers are still working. Teachers don't get paid for the summer holidays. Therefore schools won't be open.

thunderthighsohwoe · 01/04/2020 21:01

Jesus, if schools open over the summer holidays I may drop dead. I’m currently on rota to work in school, planning, delivering and remotely giving feedback on 93 pieces of a work a day (three per child, per day), dealing with parent and child queries via Seesaw app AND juggling looking after a 16 month old who is struggling to sleep due to lack of stimulation in the day.

Also, the summer holidays is when I plan for the following year, set up my classroom and prepare resources. When will all that happen?

I’d love a June opening, so we can catch up on key skills and get children at least a little prepped for the next year group up.

thenovice · 01/04/2020 21:03

September or October probably.

irwellmummy · 01/04/2020 21:03

Don’t see how we can keep children in their present classes.
We are due to have new children starting in my school nursery in September and we won’t have the space or staff to accommodate them unless the others move into Reception.

Bewareoftheblob · 01/04/2020 21:05

@thunderthighsohwoe

remotely giving feedback on 93 pieces of a work a day (three per child, per day)

That is ridiculous. Who on earth implemented that policy??

Namechangerextraordinaire1 · 01/04/2020 21:08

I would ideally really like them to go back in June for a month or so, as my daughter starts secondary and is very nervous about it, plus is going to a school where she knows nobody so without even an inset day or two to get into it is going to be difficult. She's a fairly anxious child in general, and was scheduled to have extra transition days to help manage the change. It's going to be very hard for kids making big transitions like this if they haven't been at school for 6 months beforehand

PixiePowered · 01/04/2020 21:09

irwellmummy if you're talking about my post it would be everyone staying where they are until January. No new starts anywhere, nursery through to university. A complete shift in the academic year.

Tulipstulips · 01/04/2020 21:14

I don’t think you can rule anything out. It’s not like there’s a model for this kind of thing. It’s all unprecedented. The govt is paying people’s wages at the moment in a way that’s never happened before. It’s not beyond the bounds of possibility that they might consider it worthwhile to pay teachers for the summer holidays, if it gets more people out to work faster, if the virus has died down a lot. Obviously I don’t know if that’s likely to happen, but neither can I see how you can possibly rule it out.
