When do you honestly think it will happen? And when do you want it to happen?!

Corrnwall -I do agree with you. It really seems that people are hoping to somehow keep their own holiday when people around is suffering real hardship -is very unedifying. And to seize on the death of a child as an excuse! How could you enjoy a holiday in these circumstances know what others are going through? Anyone with any concern for children’s welfare will be happy for them all to Eva Korea’s at school as early as possible next term.

Stellamboscha · 01/04/2020 13:38

Not Eve Korea! To be back at school!

MarshaBradyo · 01/04/2020 13:39

Stella what are you talking about? What holiday?

MarshaBradyo · 01/04/2020 13:42

People are talking utter rot.

Of course it’s easier for many parents if children are back at school, it doesn’t mean we should put aside what has happened. School like any work place needs to be safe.

Delatron · 01/04/2020 13:44

They won’t be safe in September either? We won’t be through this by then. June/September won’t make any difference.

Unless you think it’s feasible for schools to be off until 2021? Even if that’s what you want the government won’t do it.

It’s an awful situation but this virus won’t magically have disappeared in September. In fact it would be far worse to get it going in to autumn.

If we are to be exposed to it then July/ August is a better time. Safer as the hospitals won’t be as busy.

MarshaBradyo · 01/04/2020 13:45

I’d still rather wait until September as it lowers the risk doesn’t it?

Past the peak.

MarshaBradyo · 01/04/2020 13:46

Plus we have more information by then and can reassess. Possibly anti virals. Antibody tests. Time helps.

MarshaBradyo · 01/04/2020 13:51

Workers are separate to schools and I hope the government can stick to what they were saying about antibody tests and get people back to work. Germany will be soon.

Delatron · 01/04/2020 13:51

I don’t think it’s a good idea that we all get released back in to the system in September.
You hit autumn and flu season where the pressure on the NHS is huge. If you need a ventilator you’ll be less likely to get it.

I think yes antibody testing will be great. If we have this by June/ July a staggered return to school/ work will be better and safer. You can still protect vulnerable people. We don’t want a second peak in autumn/winter.

Delatron · 01/04/2020 13:52

Opening the schools gets people back to work. That’s the whole problem and why the government wanted to wait as long as possible before closing them.

Tulipstulips · 01/04/2020 13:53

People saying they think it will be September - is that when you think ALL childcare provision In England will reopen? Or just schools/colleges because they’re not set up to open in August? Do you think that’s how long the lockdown will continue? I’m wondering about nurseries/holiday clubs...presumably if many restrictions are lifted in the summer, they will want to reopen?

MarshaBradyo · 01/04/2020 13:53

I’m all for getting things going for tested people but I do diverge re schools.

cornishdreams1 · 01/04/2020 14:05

I would say that the economy will be entirely bankrupt if we continue a lockdown situation for six months, the bottom line is that we would not, as a country, even be able to continue to fund it beyond three months. The sums are just eye watering for anyone that does the maths. As it stands now, we are already in a deep, deep recession.

So at some point, we will need to gently return to schooling/working, the healthy will need to at least.

There is going to be no point in June, nor September or November that we will be able to confidently say it is 100% safe for absolutely everyone, we are going to have to be reasonably confident that the risks are low enough. What is the alternative we remain in lockdown for the next 18 months until a vaccine is rolled out? Of course not, we need to wait for the peak, and then get back to work and school.

And if you are like me, and believe this will be one of many pandemics in the future, then we'd best get used to to them, and find ways of carrying on as safely as we can.

There are many people calling for a return now after the Easter holidays as dela has said, I am not sure I agree with that, it may be too early - but who knows what will be decided. We are entering the peak now, we will have to see where it takes us.

MarshaBradyo · 01/04/2020 14:07

Lockdown can’t last 6 months. But you can split workers into antibody tested as safe to get things going. As Germany will with immune passports.

cornishdreams1 · 01/04/2020 14:15

A lockdown has not been done anywhere on earth for longer than three months, not even in China, so I am just wondering why everyone thinks the schools will stay shut and in lockdown until September?

I am genuinely surprised that anyone would think this, and even reading through all of these posts, no one has provided the science or any reasoning as to why this would ever be the case here in the UK, when it hasn't happened, and is unlikely to happen anywhere else.

MarshaBradyo · 01/04/2020 14:17

Chiba clamped down earlier and more effectively you know that right?

And the other countries provide no information as they are still closed.

You have no more information than anyone.

MarshaBradyo · 01/04/2020 14:18

We’ll see in time but even the schools here are telling parents September.

cornishdreams1 · 01/04/2020 14:22

Marsha we have been advised to plan for a return in June, who exactly is confirming to you that schools will be closed to Sep? Or is it just rumour.

Wuhan's timeline is below. It is hard to see given it was the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak why the UK would diverge so far from their timeline. You can see it was just a few months in the end.

Lockdown timeline for Wuhan

13 February 2020, the Chinese government has issued extension of order to shut down all non-essential companies, including manufacturing plants, in Hubei Province until at least 24:00 20 February.[19]
20 February 2020, the Chinese government has issued extension of order to shut down all non-essential companies, including manufacturing plants, and all schools in Hubei Province until at least 24:00 10 March.[20]
13 March 2020: Huangshi removes controls and permits on road traffic within its urban area;[6] Qianjiang does the same for its entire administrative area.[7]
14 March 2020: Hubei Sanitation and Health Committee (卫生健康委员会) Vice-Chairperson Liu Dongru (柳东如) announces that only Wuhan remains a "high-risk area",[21] and that the entirety of the rest of the province is considered medium- or "low-risk areas". Any low-risk township-level divisions, in addition to those medium- and high-risk divisions with no confirmed active cases, could lift their blockades and other mobility controls.[22] Per China News Service reporting, by 14 March, besides the aforementioned Huangshi and Qianjiang, Yichang, Huanggang, Suizhou, Xiantao, Jingzhou, Jingmen, Shiyan, Xiangyang, Tianmen and Shennongjia had announced "measures to lessen controls" and for industries to incrementally resume work and production.[22]
17 March 2020: Jingzhou removes its permit requirements for transport, resuming normal transport operations, and also removes entry/exit controls on xiaoqu.[23]
18 March 2020: The Hubei taskforce to control COVID-19 (湖北省新冠肺炎疫情防控指挥部) announces that, with the exception of exit/entry into Wuhan and the province as a whole, all anti-COVID-19 traffic checkpoints within the province are to be removed.[24]
22 March 2020: Wuhan loosens its two-month lockdown.[25]
25 March 2020: Hubei lifts the lockdown outside of Wuhan,[26] although people will still need to confirm their "Green Code" health classification, designated by Alipay's monitoring system,[26] to travel.[27]
27 March 2020: Wuhan lifts its lockdown, resumes all transportation,[28] with residents intending to leave the city facing similar "Green Code" requirements as those in the rest of the province.[27]

cornishdreams1 · 01/04/2020 14:26

I think our school are probably ahead of the curve in planning for our return, and in doing so informing everyone early to avoid confusion. I don't believe for a minute they have concocted the date from nowhere, they will have been advised this is the 'most likely' scenario.

Absolutely no one is talking about September here, so that is why I am quite confused when I read threads like this, suggesting the UK will be in lockdown for several months in totality, and all schools will be shut. It is just nonsense.

MarshaBradyo · 01/04/2020 14:27

Cornish I do not know who is advising the school only that in the last conversation I had with the teacher by phone they said we expect September.

Wuhan is the epicentre but it locked down early and comprehensively. It’s worth looking at the stats for how many in China were infected, it’s very low (under 5% allowing for error). We are not able to stop it being a significant proportion of population (60%) unless we only send people antibody-tested back to work. We can’t wait for a vaccine to release lock down so it’s either antibody testing or community wide spread.

MarshaBradyo · 01/04/2020 14:28

I don’t believe the school concocted their date, or maybe they both did ;

88Pandora88 · 01/04/2020 14:29

I'm hoping for June, even if it is only for a few weeks, it'll be nice for the kids to get back in a routine and see their friends for a bit. I think if it's September, it's going to be hard in the children. Some will be in new schools, most new classes, new teachers etc, having 6 months off will be hard on them all 🤷🏻‍♀️

MarshaBradyo · 01/04/2020 14:31

In fact I’d say no school knows what the government plans. As they didn’t just before they closed. And are working and communicating with a view to their own pressures.

Travelban · 01/04/2020 14:35

I just hope that schools reopen before workplaces demand people back in, as this would put many millions of workers in an impossible predicament.

It is hard enough as it is, but I am not sure I would be prepared to do my usual travel and leave the kids on their own every day of the week/most of the week to fend for themselves!!!

I am mentally preparing for schools to reopen in September though. June just seems very close... If you think we are 2/3 weeks behind Italy and they haven't reached the peak yet....

Delatron · 01/04/2020 14:38

The government is changing and tweaking the strategy daily as more info comes in.

The schools will open just as quickly as they shut. Nobody knows when that will be but what we do know as fact is that the economy won’t cope with 6 months of lockdown and the government won’t allow that to happen.
