When do you honestly think it will happen? And when do you want it to happen?!

The government may push through legislation. But l still stand by the fact that they cannot make us work without paying us.

ZarkingBell · 31/03/2020 10:39

I'm really hoping they will open again in September. I feel we can manage until then. Longer will be very hard.

Leona123321 · 31/03/2020 10:41

@deelish.
No chance. They will not expect kids to stay home for 14 months. That's ridiculous they would all be ill from not living a normal life. Do you honestly think kids and teenagers can stay in the house for a year without school, days out, family, friends, education, college, sports etc. They will overweight, lazy, anxious and will be cut off from everything

MabelMoo23 · 31/03/2020 10:41

But realistically, can the economy survive if the schools don’t open until September?

We need to get people back to work. And that can’t happen whilst the schools are closed.

So I’d like to think June, after the May half term. But I appreciate that maybe optimistic

mummamiaherewegoagain · 31/03/2020 10:41

I think January is most likely, autumn half term at the absolute earliest, spring 2021 at the latest.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 31/03/2020 10:43

And it’s shit that schools are closed and education is being disrupted. I cried in my A level class, as did they. It’s shit.

I share all the concerns about education. My own dd is in Year 9. I don’t even know when she’ll be starting year 10, and what is going to happen to her GCSE’s.

But the bottom line is, schools are the most infectious places there are. No room for social distancing, and staff will be ill. I don’t think they will open properly until a vaccine or cure becomes available.

LoveFameTragedy · 31/03/2020 10:43

I'd love them to go back mid June in primary at least. Even if it was just Y6, so we could prepare them for transition.

Leona123321 · 31/03/2020 10:44

I think if it goes on for too long they will have to dig out some old teachers from retirement. Get some porter cabins delivered to schools and keep all school kids back a year. Let receptions 2020 intake go in the cabins. Same for secondary school get some temporary cabins for certains subjects. There's no way our kids should have to pay the price for this bluddy virus. They can't be expected to just catch up in such complex years.

KoalasandRabbit · 31/03/2020 10:47

Expecting September, our school has just refunded above deposits for first week of June school trips today so clearly not expecting to be open then and it said goodbye to year 11s and gave them details of 6th forms.

SugarSugarShimmy · 31/03/2020 10:48

Not all teachers are working now. In my child’s school there are about 2 teachers a day in to look after keyworkers children and no online learning so what are they doing?

This is a pandemic and sometimes people have to do uncomfortable things like have less holiday and not threaten to strike because of it

PurpleDaisies · 31/03/2020 10:48

There’s already a massive teacher shortage leona. You can’t recruit maths and science teachers for love nor money. There’s no way schools could cope with an extra year’s worth of children. Impossible.

Yurona · 31/03/2020 10:49

@TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince of course you should get paid! And maybe schools will only open for 2 days a week per yeargroup etc to protect teachers. But opening in September makes 0 sense

ShastaBeast · 31/03/2020 10:50

They are building all these new hospitals - 4000 beds in London alone and they haven’t maxed out the new beds in the existing hospitals. The number of hospitalisations will go up over the next two weeks before falling due to the lockdown measures. The government will need to release the lockdown after a while to increase cases again, so as to fill some of this new hospital provision. This could be as early as May as incubation is about a week, symptoms worsening another week plus one or two weeks in ICU.

Closing schools had the least impact on increasing cases in the Imperial modelling so it makes sense that it would be the first measure to be loosened. Pushing back school holidays to winter is also a good option if we think heat will suppress the spread.

CouldBeOuting · 31/03/2020 10:50

Teacher illness and deaths are inevitable, much as for healthcare workers, especially as teachers will have no PPE.

Never mind PPE we cant even get soap! I’ve taken in soap from home! Our soap order has been on back order for weeks and it’s impossible to get hand sanitiser. Also impossible to keep two meters away from everyone. You can’t refuse to touch a five year old who just fell over and grazed their knee! You can’t even keep ONE meter away from me if you come into my office! (We do have lots of toilet roll though....)

ritzbiscuits · 31/03/2020 10:51

I'm mentally thinking September. However, that doesn't make sense to then cause a second peak in the autumn at the beginning of flu season.

I'm therefore hoping that schools may return some time in June/July. I could also see that summer holidays may be shortened to say 4 weeks rather than 6.

Yes, teachers don't get paid for holiday time, though giving the government are printing money left, right and centre at the moment, you could see some money being made available. Or, make them do it anyway, it's well known teachers are treated terribly by the government.

jaguar67 · 31/03/2020 10:52

Assuming the peak hits in next 2-3 weeks as predicted, I think June.

That will give 4-6 weeks until schools close for summer, enabling parents to get back to work and help kick-start the economy. I'm seeing this as one of the first stages a return to 'normal'.

I don't have school-age children, so no direct vested interest either way - however I don't see how keeping schools shut until September is in the long-term interests of anyone (including the children themselves) UNLESS of course we don't get the virus under control.

On that note, complete respect to all you teachers and parents managing your way through this Flowers . Hearing and seeing some incredibly inventive and inspirational remote learning going on.

Leona123321 · 31/03/2020 10:53

This is why testing needs to be massively available. Kids and teachers need testing. Everyone needs testing really. At some point life has to start again. Otherwise what's the point in life?

ShastaBeast · 31/03/2020 10:53

Another option for reopening the country as a whole will be immunity certificates as proposed in Germany. Kids and teachers with immunity will be able to return without restrictions. Slowly the numbers will rise as they return. If schools reopen and close again the immune will be able to continue.

Nirvana1979 · 31/03/2020 10:53

Is everyone saying September because thats when the english schools go back after summer?

I'm in Scotland so hoping August. June would be absolutely fab 🤞

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 31/03/2020 10:54

Could be outing, and this is what people don’t understand! I have a class of 30 in a room built for 15. You can’t sit apart.

The corridors aren’t even 2m wide, and 1800 kids change lesson every hour. It’s like a rugby scrum.

Lostmyshityear9 · 31/03/2020 10:54

I too would like to know what will happen with next year's GCSEs as DS is currently in Y10. At the moment he is plodding on with all the work his teachers are giving him

Tell him to keep plodding. We have no idea what is going to happen with Years 10 and 12 but I think we are quietly hopeful that their exams next year will operate on some kind of reduced basis. The problem is, different schools use different textbooks and follow different schemes of work so we won't all be in the same place. Indeed, some of us will have studied different areas of the spec compared with other schools. However, I can only assume that this is being worked on behind the scenes because we effectively have 5 teaching terms for GCSE and A Level and we are going to lose one of them. It's too much. We can't continue as normal next year, that's even assuming next year is normal (and there are indications it won't be). The more your son can keep his head and do the work asked of him now, the better position he will be in next year.

PurpleDaisies · 31/03/2020 10:55

Could be outing, and this is what people don’t understand! I have a class of 30 in a room built for 15. You can’t sit apart.

How is that outing? It’s pretty much the majority of schools in the country!

WanderingMilly · 31/03/2020 10:57

To be honest and from a purely selfish perspective, I hope it is September. I work part-time, non-teaching and I'm currently furloughed. However, I really don't see how schools will manage if they have to pay us all right through to September with no work....

And obviously, from children's and parents' perspective, I am sure many are hoping for June, so that children don't lose out on vital education or from seeing their friends, and so that parents can get a bit of respite.... At this point though I really don't think any of us can predict...

TokyoSushi · 31/03/2020 11:01

Fantasy is that they go back around early July and we just start the next academic year then, all holidays are shifted somehow (don't know to what) the holiday companys don't catch on and we can all go on cheap holidays for the next academic year!

Realistically, 99.9% chance, September Sad

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 31/03/2020 11:01

I did t mean to write outing!😬
