Anyone SE and not claiming UC?

Is anyone else not claiming UC?

My DH is SE and obviously not able to work. I’ve cancelled some direct debits and put a few accounts on hold and we can just about manage to get to June.

Someone has suggested we won’t then get the grant in June because we haven’t claimed UC, that can’t be true can it?

I just don’t understand UC and how it works and all I see is people saying it takes weeks to apply. And then how do we pay it back, the grant in June? And we then don’t get tax credits anymore?

Oh we hadnt as I thought we'd get the money in June... I dont understand Confused

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 30/03/2020 20:29

No and that’s not true either. Most people with a spouse still earning will be entitled to very little if anything.

Hormonecrazyhell · 30/03/2020 20:31

If u change into UC you won’t be able to go back into any tax credits

suitepea · 30/03/2020 20:33

I'm holding off from applying yet, going to speak to me accountant soon and I can post on here what I find out if that's helpful. My OH and I are both SE

I take home under £1000 ,surely we'd be entitled to something?

mrsbaseball · 30/03/2020 20:37

@GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat

What’s not true?

Uc entitlement depends on a few things . If you have savings or capital over 16k you cannot claim at all. Savings between 6k and 16k will reduce the amount you get. You will get standard element ( single or couples), child element(s), rent element if you rent, disability element if you have a disabled child, carers element if you have a disabled child. the elements are all added up then reduced by wages. If you have children on the claim then a certain amount of earnings is disregarded before wages reduce the amount. this disregard depend whether you claim the rent element or not.

chipsandgin · 30/03/2020 20:42

It’s totally unclear - I’ve assumed that if you claim UC you wouldn’t get the grant as well as it would double up (having stopped claiming child and working tax credits a couple of years ago as they claimed back basically everything they’d given us year after year, with nobody able to explain why exactly and us having constantly updated them with any income changes etc).

Does anyone know or have a link to a statement about the 80% & UC and one wiping the other out!?

playthestation · 30/03/2020 20:44

It's for absolutely nothing to do with UC and it will be claimed through HMRC. You do not have to claim UC now to be able to apply for the grant when it's available.

playthestation · 30/03/2020 20:44

It's GOT

SE and not claiming UC. I got in a good half month this month before things started to taper down, I have several invoices that will be paid to me by the end of April. On that basis I’d be ok until the end of May. I’ve applied for a mortgage holiday and have some savings (saved for tax but needs must and I’ll worry about January later) so I can get by until the allowance is organised in June. I have no intention of claiming UC and it isn’t a criteria on any of the government released information about the scheme.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 30/03/2020 20:47

It’s not true about not getting the grant if you don’t claim UC. Not everyone will be entitled to them so how could it be true? Well anyway, it’s not true.

elliejjtiny · 30/03/2020 20:48

Dh is SE. We are claiming working tax credits and child tax credits. We won't go into universal credit until we are forced too as we would be worse off.

AllTheProsecco · 30/03/2020 20:52

Does anyone know how much DH would need to earn for us to not be eligible for UC? I'm fairly sure we won't be but he's cut had to take a pay cut. Can't get any of the calculators to load.

Babyroobs · 30/03/2020 20:54

AllTheProsecco - that would completely depend how many kids you have, whether you pay rent etc. The cut off will be different for everyone depending on circumstances.

AllTheProsecco · 30/03/2020 20:58

Ah thanks @Babyroobs. Will be more patient with the website!

itsbetterthanabox · 30/03/2020 20:58

I've put in my application. It didn't take long except I was on hold a long while.
I'll get the money in 4 weeks but its backdated.
I don't receive tax credits so can't comment on that.
I asked whether it affected the self employment grant and they said it doesn't. I will be contacted in June about the grant seperatley. Universal credit is for living now.

Jellykat · 30/03/2020 21:02

I get a small amount in Working Tax Credit each week, and haven't applied for UC as it'll wipe out my Tax Credit claim.. I really really don't want to get involved with the UC system, especially once this is all over, as they'll be no turning back.. so am slowly limping through.

My WTC and the small amount i'm receiving due to being furloughed in a 5 hour a week PAYE job, equals the weekly UC amount anyway..

LaurieFairyCake · 30/03/2020 21:10

Anyone know what the maximum advance you can get from UC is?

I'm self employed and will get a payout in June but I'd rather borrow it from UC now

Sharpkat · 30/03/2020 21:13

@LaurieFairyCake the amount you can advance depends on the amount you will get every month. Think I was able to get £1000 when I was in London and about £700 when I was in the North.

LaurieFairyCake · 30/03/2020 21:18

Is the advance a one-off?

WhatTiggersDoBest · 30/03/2020 21:23

I haven't put in for UC. I'm not eligible, even now, because of the way I get paid some of my money (royalties, anything from 3 months to 9 months in arrears, depending on who is paying them).

Thekindyoufindinasecondhand · 30/03/2020 21:24

I was also under the impression if you are eligible for the help in June you must not of claimed Universal Credit prior to that? Can anyone who has actually managed to get through to a human confirm this isn't true!

I applied for UC online for as far as being told to call a number, then have tried calling numerous times with no answer (up to 2 hours at a time) so would love to know!

mrsbaseball · 30/03/2020 21:24

I think we will try to struggle through then and just catch up with stuff with the grant in June.

It’s very confusing for people who haven’t used UC before.
