Anyone SE and not claiming UC?

Is anyone else not claiming UC?

My DH is SE and obviously not able to work. I’ve cancelled some direct debits and put a few accounts on hold and we can just about manage to get to June.

Someone has suggested we won’t then get the grant in June because we haven’t claimed UC, that can’t be true can it?

I just don’t understand UC and how it works and all I see is people saying it takes weeks to apply. And then how do we pay it back, the grant in June? And we then don’t get tax credits anymore?

may be a silly question but why is UC worse off then tax credits?

Babyroobs · 30/03/2020 23:00

Some people are a lot better off on UC because rent element is also included in the award. Uc is better for some people but not others for example Uc is worse for students generally because student loan is deducted from Uc pound for pound where with tax credits you can get tax credits and student loan. People with savings over 16k can still claim tax credits but not UC.

Babyroobs · 30/03/2020 23:02

Also on UC if you are part of a couple and one receives a disability benefit or you have a disabled child you can still claim the Uc carers element even if your earnings exceed the threshold for carers allowance so you are exempt from claiming carers allowance. There is not such comparable thing on tax credits.

ChippyDucks150 · 30/03/2020 23:06

I work pt and dh is self employed. Can I adjust our child tax credits to include working tax credit now? Or would I have to change to uc, which I am reluctant to do?

aibuovu · 30/03/2020 23:07

thank you babyroobs

Babyroobs · 30/03/2020 23:12

Chippy - as long as work more than 24 hours you would be ok to stay on tax credits and claim wtc as long as income is low enough. However you may be better off on UC.

SarahTancredi · 30/03/2020 23:18

Shit that cant be true can it? That if you put in a claim for UC you wont get the grant?

We applied on line I only work although thankfully been furloughed so will get paid but it wont cover rent.

Should we not have put the claim in? Its dp that's self employed

Babyroobs · 30/03/2020 23:55

I'm not sure on the rules. However if the grant is paid then that is basically going to cancel out any UC as you will be receiving income elsewhere so you can't keep both. But if the grant isn't payable until June then you will have to claim something to survive off for the next few months.

Sharpkat · 30/03/2020 23:58

@LaurieFairyCake it is a one off advance per claim and is deducted from your monthly payments

Aky42 · 31/03/2020 00:30

I'm SE and DH is working but furloughed, hopefully. I registered as self employed 06 April 2019. We receive Child Tax Credits and tiny bit of Working Tax Credit. As I can't receive any help from HMRC as not been self employed long enough, is it worth trying for UC ? Or do I update Tax credits with final income for 2019)20 and forecast next year, which will be a lot less? Confused!

Blakes77 · 31/03/2020 00:46

What if you did work over 24 hours but now you can't because of CV , can you still keep your WTC?

onetiredmummy13 · 31/03/2020 00:59

Hubby and I are both self employed and out of work now. We haven't claimed as we have savings which means we're entitled to f all 😢 I'm still expecting the june payment as we both hVe years worth of self assessment?

VeganCow · 31/03/2020 01:00

Blakes77 yes you can and it won’t be reduced, also you don’t need to inform them that you have stopped work due to cv

Blakes77 · 31/03/2020 10:33

Thank you so muchVegan.
Having researched I think I need to apply for New Style Employment Support Allowance. (Why so many different things!?)
This is a supplement to a low wage but not UC. I have never heard of it before.
I am self employed status but earn over 50% of my money on a zero hours contract, not entitled to sick pay OR the 80% thing and don't want to claim UC. Hopefully this is the right thing.
It's not bloody easy to know which thing to apply for is it?!

blossombabies · 31/03/2020 10:39

@blakes new style ESA is for people who have a medical condition/illness and have been signed of work due to sickness.

Blakes77 · 31/03/2020 10:54

Oh bugger.
Is it me being thick or is it really unclear on the Gov websites?
I'm entitled to basically nothing then! I guess I will have to apply for UC.

blossombabies · 31/03/2020 11:04

@blakes you can apply to UC im not sure what your entitlement would be as it depends on your income but if you are SE and low earner UC can top up your earnings.

blossombabies · 31/03/2020 11:05

also you can use entitledto website to calculate your entitlement

Blakes77 · 31/03/2020 11:08

Thanks. It's impossible to speak to anyone in RL, so MN very helpful!
