Should there be repercussions for the Chinese officials who tried to conceal the outbreak?

It is said that if they had acted three weeks earlier the cases could have been reduced by 95 percent. The the two whistle blowers (doctors) who tried to warn people were penalised for speaking out and gagged. They tried to cover it up for almost a month.

I ask that this isn't turned into a "you are being racist" thread as that isn't the case. I'm just as upset for the Chinese fatalities as I am for others around the world.

What are your thoughts?

I think we need to start penalising our own guilty people first and then take justice abroad.

I have no doubt Boris will be hailed as a hero at the end of this even when a lot of our current mess is caused by the approach his government took.

Honestly, how could you get confused about joining an EU initiative to provide ventilators to all countries, did you hear Gove about this? He said they didn’t order them because they were confident the UK as independent country could get their own, which is true, perhaps a few weeks too late for thousands of people, but true all the same.

The wet markets are horrific and disgusting and now the whole world knows about it.
China is very embarrassed, they will be angry and executing anyone who tries to embarrass them further,...it's all about saving face with them.
No matter how many poor peasants they have to punish as long as the dear leader can keep his hands clean

UYScuti · 29/03/2020 13:41

Concentration camps indeed and what about enforced organ donation from live donors?
There's a whole lot of very sinister stuff going on there

Roostersmum2 · 29/03/2020 14:35

Why they eat these things (bats, pangulins, snakes etc) is beyond me. I saw the most beautiful serval cats and fennec foxes in cages on the 60 minutes documentary and it made me so sad.

Boris Johnson won't be a hero in my eyes, no matter how many further restrictions he puts in place. He has screwed both the population and the NHS over massively by not acting sooner. We are still dealing with the fallout from Cheltenham now. He shouldn't be hailed a hero and I certainly won't be singing his praises. I do hope he recovers though, he's all we have at the minute.

Are you aware that we are talking about a government that is literally putting ethnic minorities in concentration camps?

No I hadn't heard about that, I will do some reading up

Why do they eat these things?
I suppose the same reason that we eat the creatures we eat....because they enjoy it and they want to!
with the factory farming system animals are kept in conditions that result in high levels of disease and suffering but because we use antibiotics the level of disease is controlled.
the wet markets have the same amount of and suffering and disease for the animals but they don't have the antibiotics ....I presume?

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 30/03/2020 01:00

The eating of wild animals is actually due to the ridiculously high food prices for ‘normal’ things that people want to eat.

Many peasants would eat ‘bushmeat’ (eg: wild animals/ cats etc )which as their population became a bit wealthier then became part of a wider trade.

If China didn’t treat its residents so shabbily and have such a ridiculous geographic and social wealth disparity then no one would have been eating weird and wonderful (and forbidden )things.

There’s also the angle of Chinese medicine- the powders or residues from rare animals being imbued with a special power to heal.

You’ve basically got poor people who are stuck with eating horrible stuff, or rich people who are uneducated or superstitious enough to continue doing it.

Chinese government has around 1 million uighurs in concentration camps in 2020. I don't remember any massive uproar from the world or leaders.

Kokeshi123 · 30/03/2020 03:22

Really?

It was all over the news.

In any case, I only brought up the issue, because one poster was implying that anyone criticizing China's horrible government was "racist." Bloody hell, are people really that naive? The CCP is probably the most openly ethnonationalist state on the planet and has the most appalling human rights record. They also fucked up big-time with this virus.

cinammonbuns · 30/03/2020 08:19

When Britain pays compensation to the countries it colonised (resulting in millions of deaths) then British people can start talking about China paying compensation.

Roostersmum2 · 05/04/2020 16:28

I saw this article today which I thought was relevant to my OP

China "could" end up paying the UK 351bn in coronavirus damages, report calls for UN to step in.

There is also evidence that they tried to silence Taiwan when they spoke out early on. I’m also not liking WHO’s responses to this either from the very top. Very interesting articles I have read today about this. Hard to know what is really the truth though.
