I feel China should be heavily, heavily financially compensating every country affected by this, due to this and their dodgy food practices that allow zoonotic transmission in the first place
@lubeybooby - how far back in history should this principle be applicable for? It would open up a whole can of worms if that happened. (Even not counting the Americas, Africa, India or Australia, just look up about the opium trade between Britain and China before calling for compensation.)
Even if we don't go back in history, surely we in the West have an unnecessarily large environmental impact (foreign holidays, consumer spending, excess xmas presents, etc) - should 3rd world countries in the future be able to demand compensation from us for the damage we do?
Anyway, on a practical note, things could change in those markets, either /and from the selfish point of view ("we won't give up these markets but we will improve the hygiene, just to avoid another outbreak") and/or from the "let's be kind to animals" point of view which I hope will grow there (and everywhere).
