Should there be repercussions for the Chinese officials who tried to conceal the outbreak?

It is said that if they had acted three weeks earlier the cases could have been reduced by 95 percent. The the two whistle blowers (doctors) who tried to warn people were penalised for speaking out and gagged. They tried to cover it up for almost a month.

I ask that this isn't turned into a "you are being racist" thread as that isn't the case. I'm just as upset for the Chinese fatalities as I am for others around the world.

What are your thoughts?

I feel China should be heavily, heavily financially compensating every country affected by this, due to this and their dodgy food practices that allow zoonotic transmission in the first place

Geepipe · 29/03/2020 12:08

Fully agree with you op. They cant be allowed to get away with what they did killing their own citizens and others around the world including the whistleblowing doctor.

Geepipe · 29/03/2020 12:09

I mean they allowed the whistleblowing doctor to get it and die not he should be punished. Read that a bit wrong.

ErrolTheDragon · 29/03/2020 12:10

I'd take a bet that there will be repercussions for them.

Roostersmum2 · 29/03/2020 12:25

The doctor (Li) being arrested for warning people about the SARS type outbreak says it all imo, they absolutely did not want people finding out.

Civil groups and rights activists are demanding the Chinese government's investigation into his grievance and speech suppression and I can't see anything happening yet.

They have failed their people and the rest of the world by extension Sad

I've just spoken to my landlord who has lost his dad to covid. It is that widespread now that almost everybody knows somebody affected by it.

I'm really glad that China appears to have it under control now but what about the rest of us? The damage is already done

NeverTwerkNaked · 29/03/2020 12:35

Same applies to our government though who could see this coming and did fuck all to get ready for it or to change people's behaviour in advance. There's blood on their hands too.

Same applies to our government though who could see this coming and did fuck all to get ready for it or to change people's behaviour in advance. There's blood on their hands too. I completely agree with you

DroppedBoxxedRuth · 29/03/2020 12:39

Absolutely.

But will there be? Probably not.

I hope we all hold every politician accountable for this atrocity, and judge them on their actions during this time.

Geepipe · 29/03/2020 12:42

Have you seen on sky news website china is now basically making themselves a fortress to make.coronavirus a foreign problem.

Absentwomen · 29/03/2020 12:47

Great article, OP. You're not being racist at all.

Yet, here we are. China are producing the ventilators that the UK and other countries so desperately require.

ginghamstarfish · 29/03/2020 12:52

Read a story the other day about a Chinese company in Australia, back in Jan I think was instructed to quietly buy millions of masks, hazmat suits etc, and ship them all to China. Whistleblower reported it, was in the Aus press. Bastards, and no doubt lying all along about the numbers as I and many other have thought.

Roostersmum2 · 29/03/2020 12:55

I have seen the sky news article yes, it is bittersweet. Obviously I am glad they are now taking stringent measures to protect their people but on the other hand I'm angry, because the rest of the world is now dealing with their fall out (not helped by the fact our own leaders have dragged their heels)

Dongdingdong · 29/03/2020 12:58

Yes, and they should be forced to close their barbaric food markets as well:

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8163761/Chinese-markets-selling-bats.html

Unfortunately though I don't think it will happen.

Morgan12 · 29/03/2020 13:03

If only.

I do hope that this will make China change their food practices though. Look at the state of the world just now because of one market. It's just ridiculous.

But alas, it won't.

Roostersmum2 · 29/03/2020 13:06

The wet markets are a disgrace. I recommend people watch 60 minutes australia and their investigation into said markets when they have time.

They were still in business after the coronavirus outbreak hit the news.

Seeing how the animals are kept in squalid conditions in close proximity there's no wonder something like this happened, it was inevitable.

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 29/03/2020 13:19

I know everyone is big on boycotting businesses that treat their employees poorly in the UK but I think we should be considering a wider boycott of Chinese goods.

Their increased wealth at the expense of their citizens is something that we have turned a blind eye too for too long.

We should not be colluding with their poor humanitarian policies.

I know we all like a saving- but nothing is worth this.

Epos · 29/03/2020 13:22

I just watched that OP. I can’t understand why anyone will eat these animals. Why just why. Is it because it’s cheaper than say chicken, beef, lamb? I don’t get it.

Kokeshi123 · 29/03/2020 13:23

*Great article, OP. You're not being racist at all.

Are you aware that we are talking about a government that is literally putting ethnic minorities in concentration camps?

I have no idea about the ventilators but a) they will be selling them not donating them, and b) they have already delivered a bunch of duff masks and dud tests to Holland and Italy respectively.

jhj67 · 29/03/2020 13:30

@lubeybooby - how far back in history should this principle be applicable for? It would open up a whole can of worms if that happened. (Even not counting the Americas, Africa, India or Australia, just look up about the opium trade between Britain and China before calling for compensation.)

Even if we don't go back in history, surely we in the West have an unnecessarily large environmental impact (foreign holidays, consumer spending, excess xmas presents, etc) - should 3rd world countries in the future be able to demand compensation from us for the damage we do?

Anyway, on a practical note, things could change in those markets, either /and from the selfish point of view ("we won't give up these markets but we will improve the hygiene, just to avoid another outbreak") and/or from the "let's be kind to animals" point of view which I hope will grow there (and everywhere).

TheMotherofAllDilemmas · 29/03/2020 13:34

A country compensating for damage to other countries??? We will never end paying off for the damage caused by the British Empire. 😁

Up to 90% of the population in other countries was killed by epidemic brought by colonial expansion efforts.

TheMotherofAllDilemmas · 29/03/2020 13:35

Boycotting Chinese goods? Great idea! Should we cancel that huge order for ventilators?

HermioneWeasley · 29/03/2020 13:35

I agree - they should be paying huge reparations. I only hope that this devastation caused means the Chinese government revisit the wet markets and their approach.

Absentwomen · 29/03/2020 13:35

@Kokeshi123 - the ventilators went be coming for nothing. China has the means of production. Means of production is selling.

The point I was making was, that China is a global super power. Will China be penalised in any way based on what had happened? I doubt it. There's so much unknown about Covid-19.

There are some loose facts surrounding what COULD have happened.

It was an interesting article. I don't think the OP was being racist. That was all I was saying.

1984isnow · 29/03/2020 13:37

Are you aware that we are talking about a government that is literally putting ethnic minorities in concentration camps?

I wonder why we don't hear more about this? The world chooses to ignore it
