Today I am braising a lettuce. An out of date romaine lettuce.

Make me feel better about this!

Broccoli stalks are fantastic eaten in exactly the same way as the rest of it. My favourite is roasted. 👍

Ninkanink · 28/03/2020 18:55

Potatoes are still fine to eat after they have sprouted. I would cook some up now and store in the fridge - use over the next few days. Do so again once you have used those up. You can also make mash as usual and freeze it.

TitsInAbsentia · 28/03/2020 18:58

@Maelwaedd I'm always complaining we can't get tatty scones in the shops here (even in the 'good' times) I don't know why I never considered making my own! Thank you Grin

TitsInAbsentia · 28/03/2020 19:02

Ah @Ninkanink frozen mash is a good idea! Do I add my usual butter and milk before I freeze it or defrost and then add those? I have got potatoes (we keep ours in the fridge...don't judge, it's hotter than hell in here most of the time!) but I don't want anything going to waste at all right now!

yaychocolateginandwine · 28/03/2020 19:04

Broccoli stalk , banana and milk whizzed up in a smoothie maker - delicious!

nowaitaminute · 28/03/2020 19:12

Do ppl not do these things anyway? Using up older bananas for banana bread, or older fruit for baking?
Water in porridge is not odd at all Confusedit's totally normal and acceptable.
I hate food wastage and I only buy exactly what I need each week anyway so I have little to no wastage.

Cohle · 28/03/2020 19:23

Surely it's a good think if people are reducing their food waste. Why discourage people from sharing their ideas?

nowaitaminute · 28/03/2020 19:27

Not discouraging I just thought everyone aimed to reduce food waste! Seems common sense to me tbh!!

MissPoldark · 28/03/2020 19:28

I can’t believe the broccoli stacks are so popular! Chopped up 2 that I’d saved for an omelette this morning.

Something I started doing a while ago that I recommend... don’t bother peeling potatoes for making mash. Obviously the mash is a bit more rustic, but so much tastier and no peelings wasted.

LaneBoy · 28/03/2020 19:30

I loooove raw broccoli and cauliflower stalk. Mum used to chop it up for me when prepping dinner

Jdabbers · 28/03/2020 19:38

I made sweet potato bread today. Had no idea what to expect but pleasantly surprised, tastes great and has the texture of malt loaf!

SerendipitySunshine · 28/03/2020 19:40

Broccoli stalks are the best bits! I never peel veg either, just give it a scrub. Cauliflower leaves are very tasty too, I use them like spring greens.

caringcarer · 28/03/2020 19:46

We usually cut up the leftover chicken or beef and feed to cats in gravy but now we are warming it up with mash and frozen veg and eating it ourselves the following day.

Verily1 · 28/03/2020 19:49

greendin

Your do won’t do a good shop at the weekend??? Why on Earth not? Huge red flag there! (Sorry for derail)

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 28/03/2020 19:58

Thanks to this thread I have diced up our Brocoli stalk. It'll either get chucked into risotto or similar, or fed to the ducks.

FthisS · 28/03/2020 20:02

We are vegan and use all sorts to make meals anyway. But if you are low on eggs you can make a batter out of just flour and (soya) milk. It makes perfect pancakes and can also be used for toad in the hole or french toast.

goodname · 28/03/2020 20:05

Roast chicken for dinner, left over chicken for fried rice, use the carcass to make chicken stock for soup with dumplings. One chicken for three meals - four people

TitsInAbsentia · 28/03/2020 20:10

There's a mary berry recipe that got me on to using the broccoli stalk, sadly the pesto is a bit pricey but you could easily adapt it with a tomato based sauce etc and we've done it with leftover chicken instead of bacon etc.

Carrie7469 · 28/03/2020 20:22

Made a crumble from some fruit that has been in the freezer far too long and some slightly out of date flour. Carrot and coriander soup with some carrots that were past their best. Made some pasta sauce with a jar of sun-dried tomatoes that was 2 years out of date Blush It tasted fine

Duchessofblandings · 28/03/2020 20:24

Encouraging everyone not to leave anything, but there’s a plastic box by the sink to pad out the dwindling dog food.

Who knew that dogs like banana chips but won’t touch Gouda?

Carrie7469 · 28/03/2020 20:24

Does anyone have any tips for using up some slightly out of date semolina (apart from semolina pudding)?

Duchessofblandings · 28/03/2020 20:26

Semolina polenta: quite a few recipes on t’net.

Vebrithien · 28/03/2020 20:27

Braised lettuce/peas/onions someone was talking about earlier. Totally delicious!

severalboxes · 28/03/2020 20:40

Bread and butter pudding made from dd's bread crusts

Apple peel crisps (toss in butter sugar cinnamon and bake on low, yum tho we burned this batch)

I'm putting more on compost too

ClientQueen · 28/03/2020 20:43

Thank you for the banana pot recipe! I made it with one banana, 4 dark chocolate buttons then added some vanilla ice cream. Oh my god, it's like a banana fritter (minus the fritter!) Grin
New pudding for me
