New restrictions in Ireland

Amymayapple · 27/03/2020 21:39

Our PM has just announced that we are not to travel 2km from our homes, and that this can be inforced.

I am scared and worried. What does everyone else think?

Hi, @Amymayapple.

I am not in favour of more restrictions and find it all pretty terrifying. There is a weird mob baying for “full lockdown” and they seem to be winning

BorrestGump · 27/03/2020 22:11

My teens have not seen their friends in the two weeks since schools closed. They do see other kids meeting up on social media and i think that makes it so much harder.

This new restriction has hit hard as their concept of time is so skewed, 2 weeks is forever and 4 or 5 is eternity Hmm. Thank God I am the age I am when 5 weeks is nothing and gardening is a treat.

MadamePewter · 27/03/2020 22:13

Have they made it longer?

Amymayapple · 27/03/2020 22:16

@BorrestGump I am in my thirties, and two weeks feels like an eternity to me aswell!

Only because I am really worried about my elderly mother who is sick, in a different part of Ireland.

More business have to close as well, but no info on what can stay open yet. Which won't help any small business make decisions before Monday morning.

donkeyoatey · 27/03/2020 22:21

What if you live more than 2 km from your nearest food shop?

womaninatightspot · 27/03/2020 22:22

How does this work for people in rural areas. Surely not everyone has a pharmacy/ supermarket within 2 miles? We've not left our property in a week but the nearest little shop is 8 miles and the supermarket is 23 miles away, nothing apart from about 8 houses within two miles.

EarringsandLipstick · 27/03/2020 22:23

Donkey you can travel the required distance to get food.

The 2km restriction relates to 'brief periods of individual exercise'

EarringsandLipstick · 27/03/2020 22:24

Woman it's ok. The 2km is in relation to exercise only. See link I just posted.

EarringsandLipstick · 27/03/2020 22:28

I'm finding it unsettling. Today was the first day I felt a bit more 'normal' and that's because I had to go to my workplace for something after 2 weeks wfh, and just the trip there made things feel more normal again.

But I understand why, and it doesn't worry me. Just going to be very hard w 3 kids, and just me. 2km isn't far enough for proper getting out but that's what it is so..

NonUrinatInVentum · 27/03/2020 22:31

I'm in France, in Day 14 of lockdown and honestly besides being eye wateringly repetitive, it's fine. I'm glad Leo pushed for more control, I was worried about my family in Dublin.

Amymayapple · 27/03/2020 22:31

This on the RTE news website:

"All public transport and passenger travel will be restricted to essential workers and people providing essential services."

OP posts:
Amymayapple · 27/03/2020 22:32

I send everyone a hug. We can all get through these strange times.

OP posts:
EarringsandLipstick · 27/03/2020 22:33

Well Amy in practice that was what was happening anyway. Who'd be going on public transport at the moment with the current situation unless you had to?

kabalarian · 27/03/2020 22:34

I think the plan is to be able to clearly identify areas where there are clusters of cases.
Won't be forever.

SmallAndFarAway · 27/03/2020 22:35

@Amymayapple, if you have your own transport RTE says that providing care to elderly and vulnerable people is an exception, so you can still go to your mum.

Hollyhobbi · 27/03/2020 22:36

Just want to point out that 2km is less than 2 miles! My elderly mother was in the chemist today. She has breast cancer and is 77 years old. Plus my dad lives with her he's 75, has diabetes, and is on steroids as he has no pituitary gland so he is also high risk. And she could have got someone to collect the medicine and leave it at the door! Anyway elderly people are being cocooned now so her gallivanting will have to stop. She says to me sure all the cases are in DUBLIN! My parents live in a big town not that far from Dublin. And we're not doing as much testing as we were. Ahh!!

Amymayapple · 27/03/2020 22:37

@SmallAndFarAway I don't have my own transport. I don't drive.

Well, I will have to think of something

OP posts:
Amymayapple · 27/03/2020 22:38

@Hollyhobbi I send you a hug. It is the worry about our elderly parents, that is making this difficult.

Small she can't. Her mother lives in the other side of the country & is ill

OP you can't go anywhere now. However your mum usually manages, that's what's going to have to happen.

It's pretty clear.

EarringsandLipstick · 27/03/2020 22:42

Mimi what?!?

I've reported your post. Not sure if that was humour but very poor taste regardless.

DublinBlowin · 27/03/2020 22:43

I’m glad there’s been more explicit advice - I was out walking in dublin yesterday and the football pitches were busy; groups of teens sitting and chatting; people playing tennis. Seemed people were very relaxed and that worries me.

Andi2020 · 27/03/2020 22:51

Stay home save lives.
Get a big shopping in and stay in doors it's only 2 weeks for now but the more we stay In the quicker it will be over if less people out spreading it about.

Barbararara · 27/03/2020 23:19

I’m guessing that with the supplies being flown in from China it makes sense to push for a short stringent lockdown and use those resources to best effect.
This is a window of opportunity and we have to make the most of it.
