So...thinking of ramping up our actions after finding out a friend is going to these lengths (their whole family are 100% fit and well, no underlying conditions) but are key workers not NHS:

  • go to work, don't accept teas coffees, stick to their own flasks
  • wash hands every hour
  • come home, wipe down steering wheels and car handles with anti bac wipes
  • unlock door and get in house
  • all clothes on chair or wash bag by door and left if needed next day
  • if washing is needed, straight in washing machine, door left ajar so no touching needed to open
  • wipe down phone and keys
  • wash hands
  • then shower
We're key workers but not NHS....thinking of doing same, but not bothering with wiping car stuff or keys or showering unless really need to as we shower every morning or before shift. We're not wiping down our shopping either which friend is... Oh and we wash our hands that won't be new!😂

Are we behind the times... Are all key workers doing this, especially if you work with children?

OP posts:
HasaDigaEebowai · 27/03/2020 21:23

I know teachers who are doing this and have been told to.

DisinfectantDoris · 27/03/2020 21:26

We've not been told, only heard through the grapevine... Feeling a bit concerned now.

Stopped all precautions

Fidgety31 · 27/03/2020 21:33

I wash my hands as usual but I’ve always been clean anyway
Don’t change my clothes when I get in - I’m sat in my bed now in my clothes !
Don’t wash my shopping either ?

Maybe will take a wipe for the shopping trolley next time I go

Bargebill19 · 27/03/2020 21:34

Key workers here - we change clothes. And wash hands a lot. Take our own coffee supplies and food into work. Practice social distancing at work.
The state of DH car would make even this virus too scared to take up residence

DisinfectantDoris · 27/03/2020 21:37

I'm growing in concern after reading this on another thread- www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2020/03/200320192755.htm -The study suggests that people may acquire the coronavirus through the air and after touching contaminated objects. Scientists discovered the virus is detectable for up to three hours in aerosols, up to four hours on copper, up to 24 hours on cardboard and up to two to three days on plastic and stainless steel.

Friend justifies actions by saying when the shit hits the fan, if any of them require hospital treatment when the NHS is overwhelmed anyone could not get the treatment needed.... So are taking all precautions to make sure they don't get it just in case.....

I honestly don't want the thing but all I'm doing is washing my hands when I come home or after touching things other people from outside could have touched eg milk bottles, rubbish bin, shopping bags. I read in the newspaper there's really no need to disinfect your shopping.

DH is a key worker and always takes his work clothes off as soon as he gets home, clean shirt every day anyway. I just can't get that worked up about it. You could drive yourself mad otherwise.

covetingthepreciousthings · 27/03/2020 21:46

We're doing similar, DH is a key worker (not NHS, but around the public)..

I'm asthmatic, but not high risk.

So when he gets in from work he strips off in porch, clothes straight into wash, then he goes straight into shower. Then cleans phone / handles he's touched. He also no longer wears a wedding ring to risk contamination on that.

Any shopping that comes in, we take off excess packaging outside the house (crisp multipacks / cardboard sleeves), then give it all a quick wash.

This might all be OTT but my anxiety is through the roof about it and I want to try do all we can to try prevent this virus to come in our house. Sad

elQuintoConyo · 27/03/2020 21:48

I'm in Spain. Harsher lockdown.
I have a PDF of recommendations:
Tie hair back
No rings, watches, earrings, bracelets
No make up, moisturiser
Nonsil varnish, short nails
Disinfect dogs' paws (THAT is a fun activity for all involved, twice a fecking day Hmm) when you get home
Disinfect shoes when you get home
Wipe gown all bags, including handbags

....and so the list goes on. What starts as a giant ballache soon becomes second nature. I was pushing DS around on a set of office drawers today for exercise Grin while dressed as a robot. Living the dream!

waterlego · 27/03/2020 21:58

I saw a video recently recorded by a hospital Dr (an IC Dr, I think) giving advice to teachers who are in school with children. He recommended regular, thorough hand-washing and regular wiping down of tables and chairs in school but said changing clothes and showering immediately upon getting home wasn’t necessary, unless you are a teacher who is working in very close proximity with children (for example working with children with disabilities with whom teachers have physical contact).

DisinfectantDoris · 27/03/2020 22:00

@elQuintoConyo... We have a cat Confused.... An outdoor roaming around one at that... What's the advice with kitties?!

Pishposhpashy · 27/03/2020 22:03

I'm washing my hands frequently, staying 2 metres away from people when out and staying home as much as possible, as advised to.

Anything more than that and I risk a relapse of my OCD, which caused me to attempt suicide 3 times so frankly I'd rather take my chances against covid 19.

Breckenridged · 27/03/2020 22:06

We are changing clothes at the door, leaving mail and shopping for 2/3 days if possible and wiping down whatever we do bring in immediately (eg fridge stuff). But yes also have a cat who is in and out as he pleases so maybe all the rest a waste of time...

PuddlesOfTears · 27/03/2020 22:13

I can’t manage all that.

I think I’ve progressed to the next stage of this, ambivalence.

We are also both key workers, both still working full time and on alternating shifts to care for primary aged dc. Live is too stressful and busy.

I’ll wash my hands regularly at work and follow the rules there and change my clothes as soon as I get home. But I can be sanitising everything when I get home. I don’t have enough cleaning supplies and I can’t easily go to the shops.

At present I’m more concerned about the financial and emotional heath of my family then the virus.

Thinkinghappythoughts · 27/03/2020 22:15

Cleaning all surfaces that we regularly touch twice a day in the house. Cleaning all items that I regularly touch at work (teacher in a closed school, but still required to go in) - keys, computer, phone, wallet, handbag.

Constant hand washing at work and when moving between placed, like going to the supermarket and in out of the car. Making child wash face regularly as well as hands.

Washing towels and clothes after 1-2 wears. I have started wiping down food packaging from supermarket.

Need to do the car before going out for essential items today.

elQuintoConyo · 27/03/2020 22:17

I don't know, Doris most of us live in flats.

ToCaden · 27/03/2020 22:18

Don't worry too much about fabrics. Viruses soon die upon contact.

It's the smooth surfaces you need to worry about. If you can manage opening doors with a sleeve that's a good trick.

But to be honest in my case I'm mainly just keeping socially distant, and washing hands, and trying not to touch too many things out of the home.

I've been isolating this week due to symptoms so may change next week depending on the level of dread when I walk into the office. I've never been one to wipe my desk and keyboard down often, but should start.

pepperpod28 · 27/03/2020 22:20

I'm doing all this except my clothes and even shoes go into a black bin bag while I shower and then all go straight in the washing machine every day. I live with 2 vulnerable people and am NHS admin, I don't care if anyone thinks I'm mad I'm not taking any chances with this thing. My work pass goes in a food bag in my pocket before I leave the building in the evening, comes out in the morning when I get in, gets wiped 3 or 4 times a day etc

DisinfectantDoris · 27/03/2020 22:31

Thanks, this is really interesting!!!

BeijingBikini · 27/03/2020 22:42

Nothing apart from washing my hands when I get in from supermarket/daily walk.

milksoffagain · 27/03/2020 22:52

It suddenly occurred to me that cash is metal and virus sticks to metal one of the longest... Perhaps everyone else has realised this long ago

goldpartyhat · 28/03/2020 01:52

DH is a front line worker. He has a shower at work before leaving, changes out of his uniform. Comes home, changes out of his clothes, they go straight in the washing machine. Doing similar wiping surfaces thing.

MoltonSilver · 28/03/2020 08:26

I don't have a shower or change clothes but I do clean the car, my keys, my phone if I've used it and I wipe over my handbag and bank card. I don't use cash. I'm always wearing a coat when I'm out so that comes off in the house obviously.
