Why are the lockdown dates different all over Europe?

Amymayapple · 26/03/2020 17:18

Each country has given a date of when restrictions will be lifted. I am in Ireland and we have been given April 19th, it seems so far away, especially as we started restrictions two weeks earlier than the UK, so it will be five weeks total of restrictions for us.

How are they making these decisions, do you think? See that the two most infected countries in Europe - have the earliest dates of when restrictions will be lifted.

Dates announced:

Italy - April 3
Spain - April 11
France - April 1
Germany - April 6
U.K. - April 13
Belgium - April 5
Portugal - April 2
Ireland - April 19

I'm a teacher in Ireland and originally they said that schools would be closed until at least 29th March, then they reviewed and lengthened it until 19th April at least, and then they may lengthen it again until May. They'll keep giving arbitrary dates until we see a peak in the illness and then a decline. Each government is just giving dates for reviews, it doesn't mean a thing. Nobody in the world knows how long it will go on for.

tegucigalpa13 · 26/03/2020 17:36

The honest answer is nobody yet knows.

DrinkSangriaInThePark · 26/03/2020 17:37

then why give a date of April 19th at all

Because they are giving dates before which things DEFINITELY won't open!

DrinkSangriaInThePark · 26/03/2020 17:38

In other words, no matter what, the restrictions won't be lifted before then. That doesn't mean they will be lifted then do you see the difference?

Amymayapple · 26/03/2020 17:42

Alright - to the people being a little aggressive.

My understanding was that this was when the restrictions would be lifted.
He said restrictions will go on until the 19th. So I thought they would be over after that. I guess the date means nothing then.
I guess the real life scenario is even worse than I thought.:(

I know I am not the only one that thought this. I was just talking to people on the phone, and they said "this is only lasting until the 19th".

I will have to get my head around the fact that it could actually go on for months.

DrankSangria is quite right.

Amymayapple · 26/03/2020 17:45

Who would have thought this would actually go on for months

OP posts:
TheCanterburyWhales · 26/03/2020 17:47

What, apart from China and Italy?

Amymayapple · 26/03/2020 17:47

And for the people saying that the UK didn't give a date, I have seen April 13th for the UK on numerous websites. it is on this website for example:

@TheCanterburyWhales you have to say seeing all schools, childcare facilities, most shops closed is unprecedented in our life times.

If you can find it on an official site I will be impressed. Until then it's just nonsense you are posting.

Amymayapple · 26/03/2020 17:50

I actually feel awful after reading this thread.

I have a little lockdown countdown calendar where I have been marking off the days. I know of loads of other people who think that we will be back to normal on April 19th. I was planning for that.

I am going to have to change my reaction to this. I haven't seen my elderly parents for three weeks, they are in a different part of the country. If this is going to go on for much longer, I am going to try and move near them

OP posts:
BarbaraofSeville · 26/03/2020 17:51

You need to read the dates as 'at least 19th April' or whenever. Ie restrictions in place until at least then but in reality what will happen is that the situation will be reviewed shortly before that date and could well be extended.

No-one has said those are the dates for things to go back to normal.

Amymayapple · 26/03/2020 17:51

@playthestation ffs. Why are you so aggressive to a person who is worried and asking questions. who dragged you up?

I'm not being aggressive. I'm telling you not to post things as fact. You haven't been able to back up your OP. Don't have a go at me personally be sure your post is nonsense. Either find a genuine source or admit you are wrong.

OhMargo · 26/03/2020 17:53

This has all happened so fast that many are still reeling from the Gov instructions/shutdowns/physical distancing and so on.

Regarding the dates, they are a moveable feast. I think restrictions will only be lifted when countries see no new cases emerging over a few days, a week or whatever. That could take a long while yet.

But there is hope, Wuhan is back in business now after approx 3-4 months, so there is light at the end of the tunnel, hopefully.

No one knows when end date will be for us, but I think it's good that there is no definitive date, who would in reality know what that is anyway right now? Better to think of a long haul, and anything better than that as a bonus.

All for one, and one for all.

playthestation · 26/03/2020 17:54

Just to clarify this is what I posted ...

If you can find it on an official site I will be impressed. Until then it's just nonsense you are posting.

It's not aggressive.

OP response to that post was to ask 'who dragged you up'

Hmm
Amymayapple · 26/03/2020 17:55

@playthestation and you aren't able to engage in any kind of intelligent conversation, without throwing puerile insults.

OP posts:
meditrina · 26/03/2020 17:56

Because everyone is guessing, and they'll have one eye to how they think the public will actually behave. When and how they introduce and describe the measures could make a difference to how well restrictions are observed

dutchyoriginal · 26/03/2020 17:56

to be honest, that was exactly the reason I (quietly) got very pissed off last week at other Dutchies posting "come on, we can do this for three weeks" messages. NO IT WON'T BE JUST THREE WEEKS, MORE LIKE THREE MONTHS! No, I don't like it either :-(

Just want to try and keep as many people safe while this rages (hopefully now trickles, due to lockdowns) through the world population
Sigh

Amymayapple · 26/03/2020 17:56

@playthestation you don't see how telling someone they are posting nonsense...on a thread where they are asking questions and concerned?

Alright hun

OP posts:
playthestation · 26/03/2020 17:57

Purile insults?

I'm confused. I said not to post this as fact, because it's not fact. I didn't insult you at all.

TheCanterburyWhales · 26/03/2020 17:57

Tbh, the person doing most of the mouthing off is you, OP.
A "oh blimey, I didn't realise that, shit, thanks for telling me" would have done.

Amymayapple · 26/03/2020 17:57

So what timeline do you all think it really is?

3 - 4 months?

I need to move closer to my family
