Only one in the supermarket from each house hold? Is that right? I heard this on another thread and on my whatsapp group but can't find anu offical info?

Seems sensible. Supermarket today was still full of over 70s treating it as a social outing

Paperdaisychain · 26/03/2020 16:59

I just really need a link to an official website if possible, I'm not arguing against it I just need the facts from the horses mouth!

I think that every supermarket manager is within their rights to decide this. So it might not even be dictated from the head office. I do think that most supermarkets will do this, especially when the crisis gets worse. You might have more "luck" with small independant shops.

Paperdaisychain · 26/03/2020 17:05

I don't need to go shopping I only need to know if this is a country wide thing or guidence from any national chain for a specific reason. I would normally call the supermarkets about this but obvs at the moment all lines are tied up.

Dd (15) and I went in together, we had two trolleys as we were shopping for two households, she went through one checkout and me the other. Even though we went around the shop together.
Next week were doing three households, not sure how that will work, but we'll figure it out.

ifonly4 · 26/03/2020 17:10

I went this morning and it was single people everywhere. I shopped for us and Mum, but I can't push a big trolley, it was a struggle getting both lots in as well as cat food and a couple of bottles (yep, got my priorities right). A neighbour opposite has said she might take me up on offering to shop for her, just bread, milk and veggies apparently - wishing I hadn't offered a few days ago, as us, my Mum and neighbour are going to have to have one of everything.

DGRossetti · 26/03/2020 17:10

Why would more than one person need to go

Disabled and carer ?

Wiaa · 26/03/2020 17:11

It's not a law but the store my dh went to today would only allow 1 person in even made kids wait outside if they seemed old enough. It is enforceable because its their store so their choice as long as not discriminating against a protected characteristic

Mintjulia · 26/03/2020 17:13

I've just been to local tesco and watched man and two children sent back to their car (protesting loudly) while woman went in.

So I guess enforceable by security on the door

Sirzy · 26/03/2020 17:13

Why do you need anything official? Surely unless you fall into the small group where there is no alternative you would do whatever was needed to minimise the number of people in the store?

I went today and did the shopping for two households and dropped the other lot on the doorstep on my way back. The favour is being returned the other direction next week. Sensible measures to keep people in the house and safe

Paperdaisychain · 26/03/2020 17:17

Yes I think it will be an issue for people shopping for the elderly or vulnerable as well as themselves.

This maybe?

Only one at a time in the supermarket
Paperdaisychain · 26/03/2020 17:18

I need the info for my job which is why common sense etc isnt enough for me I need a published source.

Paperdaisychain · 26/03/2020 17:19

@greatwave not good enough sorry!

Isolatingalready · 26/03/2020 17:25

@Paperdaisychain Sainsbury’s sent out an email this morning announcing that they were starting a queueing system today so that only a certain number of people can be in at any one time.

fussychica · 26/03/2020 17:26

On Tuesday when I last went it was 1 person only and 1in 1 out in Waitrose but no restriction in Lidl. Obviously that may have changed by the time I go next. Felt very odd as we usually shop together and discuss what we fancy for dinner etc but as there isn't much on the shelves it's a bit Hobson's choice anyway.

TheGreatWave · 26/03/2020 17:26

On Facebook if you go to Tesco Ireland they have a photo that says one person one trolley.

sunglasses123 · 26/03/2020 17:30

DS (who works in a supermarket) says a Mum with two kids one of which had a scooter stopped from coming in (what is wrong with people!). She was told the leave the scooter with security and then to quickly go in and out with the kids. Apparently she was about to argue but the security guard said it was for the safety of not just them but the other people in the shop so she sensibly decided to say nothing....

Some people really are as thick as anything

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 26/03/2020 17:32

That's what all of our supermarkets are doing, plus no children. Also.limiting how many people are allowed in at anyone time. Once the limit is reached its one out,one in.

TheGreatWave · 26/03/2020 17:36

Well it seems it isn't official advice at present so let them all go and have a party down Tesco.

bellinisurge · 26/03/2020 17:39

It's enforceable in so far as the supermarket is private property and they can choose how they like to organise their business.

NastyOldBag · 26/03/2020 17:40

I think it’s specific to individual shops, they all have different layouts and some are busier/ quieter than others so will vary rules depending on that I guess. We’re not allowed to choose which supermarket we go to anymore, my dm was stopped by police this morning going to Lidl (about a 15 minute drive) and told she had to go to Sainsbury’s instead if she wanted to do a big shop (about 5-10 minutes away). Not so much an issue for my dm but could cause massive problems for people who are on a really tight budget.

LemonScentedStickyBat · 26/03/2020 17:41

I think I saw it on Morrison’s twitter, in reply to a query- not seen it as a government issued requirement

sunglasses123 · 26/03/2020 17:41

If at all possible no children please. If they do come in you better keep a very tight control on them otherwise you are endangering others. Having seen some appalling parenting (and these people still need to eat!) you will be called out on it, quite rightly so!

To the oldies who love to wander around together. Please dont. It wont be for ever but this virus hits you harder than other groups of people.

STAY HOME!

ProfYaffle · 26/03/2020 18:01

I got an e-mail from Tesco yesterday which said "Try to shop with no more than one other person, which will help to reduce the number of people in-store at any one time."

Anecdotally I've heard local stores are turning people in groups away.

If you dm me op I'm happy to forward the e-mail to you.
