Is everyone washing their groceries?

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 26/03/2020 14:01

Not sure if I'm being paranoid or sensible but for the past week of so, I've been washing (with a dilute bleach solution) everything that comes into or leaves the house.
Any groceries are also washed in bleach, with loose fruit and veg being washed in washing up liquid and thoroughly rinsed.
I'm also regularly bleaching door handles and surfaces.
Obviously, we're all still washing our hands thoroughly and constantly.

Just wondered what other people were doing?

Its American but here's a youtube clip of how to wash your groceries if anyone is interested

lilgreen · 27/03/2020 08:40

No. I wash fruit and veg (pesticides) but other than that I wash my hands.

DrinkSangriaInThePark · 27/03/2020 08:42

No way. Life is literally too short.

Let's face it, the vast, vast majority of people who are getting this virus have been sitting in close contact for more than 15 mins with someone who had the virus. Not from their post. Or their bread packet.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 27/03/2020 08:44

No, I’m not washing my groceries.

bengalcat · 27/03/2020 08:45

No . I don’t wash fruit and veg in normal circumstances although I get some people do to remove pesticides . Majority of veg is either / or both peeled and cooked .

Onceateacher · 27/03/2020 13:47

I've left most of the shopping I got today in the car to quarantine itself Blush

BoingBoingyBoing · 27/03/2020 13:54

Who in their right mind thinks getting bleach near food is in any way a good idea?

I despair.

TheUnquestionedAnswer · 27/03/2020 13:57

I've been spraying kitchen roll with dettol surface spray and wiping the plastic with that. Not obsessively though.

RogueV · 27/03/2020 13:58

No

raysoflight · 27/03/2020 14:07

When we get our weekly shopping delivery we place everything down on sheet of cardboard then wipe down everything n out the cardboard back in garage ready for following week. We take everything out of wrappers. In going to start washing everything after unwrapping from now on!

KittyKatty123 · 27/03/2020 14:50

20 hours on cardboard

dementedpixie · 27/03/2020 15:25

This was the graphic I had seen. Not much difference in details

Is everyone washing their groceries?
Hannah021 · 27/03/2020 15:30

Yes i wash the things i will be using within the next three days.

Anything more than that i put locked away for 3 days so i dont touch them accidentally...

MyBlueMoonbeam · 27/03/2020 15:39

OCD sufferer here - I 've been wiping our shopping with cloth or wipes and anti bac soap for years so nothing has changed in our house (except people no longer think I'm as loopy)

I see too many people sneezing on things in shops - emptying rubbish bins without washing hands - dirty finger nails - grubby conveyor belts trolleys baskets etc. and that's without the added worry of covid 19

Wingedharpy · 27/03/2020 15:41

No, no and thrice times no......and I'm shielding.

IIRC there have been no reported cases of anyone becoming infected by ingesting this virus.

Common sense would indicate, that you are more likely to pick something up by all the unnecessary

handling and wafting stuff about as you turn it over to wipe or rip assunder to discard early, packaging.

Wash your hands after unpacking should be enough.

By the time you come to open the box of shreddies, it's probably been in the cupboard for longer than 24 hours and any viral traces will have died off.

Now light switches, TV remotes, tablets, phones and toilet flush buttons are a different kettle of fish!😉

MiracletoCome · 27/03/2020 15:45

No, most definitely not

willdoitinaminute · 27/03/2020 15:58

I just wash my hands after handling anything. I’m trained in infection control and surface cleaning is quite complicated. If your using bleach you would need to have the correct concentration and leave it for 10 mins minimum before rinsing then drying.
I’m not sure that washing up liquid is suitable as a soap. They stopped us using it some years ago.
I have hospital/clinical strength disinfectant wipes I use to clean anything I may handle outside of the house - purse, credit cards, car keys and hand bag.
I Also use clinical gloves but avoid touching my face when wearing them.
Also wipe all handles and doors when everything is put away.

Noflora · 27/03/2020 16:01

I get ours delivered into our garage, wipe down the fresh stuff I want to use with disinfectant and quarantine the rest where it is for 72 hours.

willdoitinaminute · 27/03/2020 16:04

Don’t use normal gloves while shopping. Unless you bin them after use or wash them. Although you would still need to wash your hands after taking them off.
If your wearing a FFP3 make sure you are clean shaven ( obviously male) saw loads of men with fitted masks today. Total waste of time because they will not seal over a beard.
So many people out there are too focused on the obvious when it’s the every day that will transmit the virus.

willdoitinaminute · 27/03/2020 16:10

Absolute MUST. Ditch the finger nails. Cut them as short as possible. Finger nails don’t get cleaned by handwashing and all manner of nasties live under them for weeks.

jasjas1973 · 27/03/2020 16:15

Today in my local village, whilst waiting to pay, a woman handled most items in the fruit and veg shelves before deciding to take one lemon....

People are idiots.

1forsorrow · 27/03/2020 16:23

I put things away and wash my hands. If I get things out I unwrap them throw away wrapping and wash my hands. My hands are getting rough, dry and a bit sore.

1forsorrow · 27/03/2020 16:26

Now light switches, TV remotes, tablets, phones and toilet flush buttons are a different kettle of fish I had a big session cleaning all that sort of stuff. I was ashamed of the TV remotes. I dread to think what a scientist could have grown from it, a large monster I would guess.

EasyTarget · 27/03/2020 16:28

I've left my shopping in the bags since Sunday 23rd.

Do you think it'll be safe to touch without washing now?😁😷😁
