Is everyone washing their groceries?

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 26/03/2020 14:01

Not sure if I'm being paranoid or sensible but for the past week of so, I've been washing (with a dilute bleach solution) everything that comes into or leaves the house.
Any groceries are also washed in bleach, with loose fruit and veg being washed in washing up liquid and thoroughly rinsed.
I'm also regularly bleaching door handles and surfaces.
Obviously, we're all still washing our hands thoroughly and constantly.

Just wondered what other people were doing?

Yes, spraying groceries with a diluted bleach, washing all fruit veg. Removing packaging when I can.

Cleaning surfaces, washing hands.

DixieFlatline · 26/03/2020 14:04

Christ, no.

woodencoffeetable · 26/03/2020 14:05

no. but we leave them outside on the balcony for an hour before packing them away.

cookielove · 26/03/2020 14:06

Nope, and also only hand washing inside if needed.

Of course we hand wash if we have been out and using hand sanitiser when out. But only hand washing after using the loo or about to eat.

None of us have symptoms in the house.

TulipsInAVase · 26/03/2020 14:07

Nope

TellItLikeItReallyIs · 26/03/2020 14:07

Washing in soapy water is what you need not bleach.

Lifesavesocialdistance · 26/03/2020 14:07

Yes.

An hour is no good. Corona can live on surfaces at least 3 days and in cruise ship they found it 17 days after people on board had left.

Washing fruit and veg with soap, taking stuff out of packages

Lifesavesocialdistance · 26/03/2020 14:10

Sorry that was to wooden.

Anyone anywhere could have it. Also post, lots of postmen going ill. All our post goes into quarantine

Jollitwiglet · 26/03/2020 14:12

Nope. Just taking stuff out of packaging, packaging goes in the bin and I wash my hands.

Fresh produce not in packaging I run under the tap as I normally would

middleager · 26/03/2020 14:15

Postie came with a parcel. We were both happy for him to throw in porch! It will stay there in the sun for 24 hours. Is that right or should I open it, chuck packaging away and wash hands?

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 26/03/2020 14:15

Washing in soapy water is what you need not bleach.

Why not bleach?

Yep, same approach here.

OP, that's a lot of bleach you're sloshing around the place. Soap is fine (better, even) and much less noxious.

WhateverHappenedToBathPearls · 26/03/2020 14:17

Why not bleach?

Because soap works perfectly well at killing coronavirus and inhaling lots of bleach fumes is bad for you.

EarringsandLipstick · 26/03/2020 14:18

There's no indication that this is necessary. It was covered on several Irish radio programmes by public health experts.

The virus exists in a very weak form on surfaces like this. Yes, it could be transmitted but much much greater chance is via droplets/touch.

EarringsandLipstick · 26/03/2020 14:20

Lifesaves the surfaces referred to are hard surfaces eg hard plastic & metal.

You are over-thinking this in relation to food items.

EarringsandLipstick · 26/03/2020 14:21

Middleager open it, throw away package, wash hands

woodencoffeetable · 26/03/2020 14:21

supermarkets here (not uk) make everyone use disinfectant on hands on entering the store.
I think the risk is quite small.

EarringsandLipstick · 26/03/2020 14:23

Yes wooden disinfectant & hand sanitiser outside most grocery stores here too

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 26/03/2020 14:24

This is very useful thank you! I was aware that I was getting anxious about everything that came into the house.

I think I will switch to washing with soap and water, rather than bleaching everything. Washing up liquid or the original Stardrops would count as soap, right?

dementedpixie · 26/03/2020 14:24

No I am not going to those extremes. What a waste of bleach too.

middleager · 26/03/2020 14:24

Thanks Earring

I must admit that I developed a cough (not CV Hmm) several weeks ago from ingesting too many chemicals, so will be using disinfectant and soap from now on.

PumpkinP · 26/03/2020 14:27

I was wondering this too but it seems extreme

maddy68 · 26/03/2020 14:27

Only unwrapped fruit and veg

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 26/03/2020 14:28

Its 24 hours on cardboard isnt it. 3 days plastic and metla so thats plastic bags, plastic pavkaging, tin cans.

Elsehwere it says 9 days and the crusie ship still had it didnt it!

We're trying to work out how to do this.
We will have lots of bags on our doorstep and door opens to street.

Last order we didnt have any fresh amd just put in the shed for 9 days....

Im missing fresh stuff though.

Certainly the deliverybdrivers will rouch everyghing and the packers and we know it lives surfaces.

Not sure how soapy soapy water needs to be to work. We were going to use dilute bleach in the garden.

Im also are of disturbing it andnit being in the air.

Im high risk so terrified.

Ideally id have a small weekly shop to minkmise amount to handle but only managed to get one delivery slot.

viccat · 26/03/2020 14:30

No. There is no evidence it is being spread on packaging or parcels. Being detectable on surfaces under lab conditions is completely different from actually catching the virus from a tin of beans.
