My local supermarkets well stocked this week. No crazy queues. Have people calmed down?

Family member today said they had an online delivery and there were two people doing the delivery as one was training. And stores are recruiting a lot more staff so I guess more people are starting to work to keep restocking.

Sparklingbrook · 25/03/2020 19:44

a lot of supermarkets are limiting the amount of customers going in at any one time. The queues could mean that they are waiting to get a trolley.

Morrisons have those plastic screens to protect cashiers and are requesting card payment wherever possible.

Pasta, eggs and crisps seem to be depleted in a store I was in but loo roll back to normal and fruit and veg looked as if stock levels were better.

awkwardbuttons · 25/03/2020 19:45

Toilet roll, tins and bread are back in stock where we are.

Zoey92 · 25/03/2020 20:01

@fedup21 i went mid afternoon

anyoldname76 · 25/03/2020 20:13

I went to my local corner shop earlier, yes slightly higher prices, but well stocked. I think I will be re-evaluating how I shop in the future, so many small businesses trying to keep going, and keeping their community fed. I understand it's not the supermarkets fault people were panic buying but a lot of the problem is that people forgot how to shop local. So many independents have closed down due to supermarkets opening up. This has all bought home to me how valued our local grocers, butchers etc are, and how much food I don't actually need but pick up when supermarket shopping

StealthPolarBear · 25/03/2020 20:18

Let's all descend on awkwardbuttons local!

Troels · 25/03/2020 20:20

I went to Aldi and Asda this morning, all very organised and Aldi was doing the marks on the floor, stay two lines back and a one way system with no backtracking. Letting the next person in when the one ahead moved on. So calm, and the only think I didn't find was Rice.
Asda had let a set number in, and let another in when someone came out. They even had Paracetamol and lots of it. And more improtanly, hair dye, and nice non essentail item I needed.

awkwardbuttons · 25/03/2020 20:23

I saw a woman walking down the road with Andrex and barely dared to dream it was true Stealth!

stickerqueen · 25/03/2020 20:36

I'm going to attempt to go food shopping tomorrow I feel like ive spent all this week logging into the supermarkets to try and get a delivery slot but no luck.

MortyFide · 25/03/2020 20:39

Still no chicken in our Asda.

StealthPolarBear · 25/03/2020 20:42

That was stupid of her, walking with it on show like that.

SuperlativeScrubs · 25/03/2020 20:42

I went tonight, about and hour and a half ago. Fully stocked. It was nice to have that moment of calm when it is still chaos around us.

Pinkypaws8 · 25/03/2020 20:46

I walked home today with a 9 pack of loo roll. Was on the lookout for potential muggers all the way!!!

supercee · 25/03/2020 20:56

My local Waitrose was backed to being nearly fully stocked today. Still being manned at the doors. No chicken though.

SuperlativeScrubs · 25/03/2020 21:00

@Troels My ALDI was the same. Everyone was calm and respectful of the distancing too, and talking to each other across the space. Moreso than normal.

Think it is just the sane people coming out after the ignorant hoarders had their fill.

IceKitten · 25/03/2020 21:03

Yes, it's much better here. Shelves only a bit emptier than normal.

PickAChew · 25/03/2020 21:11

The only thing I wanted that I couldn't get in markses, this morning were leeks (only wanted for soup, can live without) and flour.

VivaLeBeaver · 25/03/2020 21:11

I can’t get marmite. Morrisons delivery is any minute with morrisons own brand yeast extract. Dh is not happy.

TitsInAbsentia · 25/03/2020 21:15

I'm going to have to brave it at some point in the next few days, trying to only go every two weeks. Not overjoyed at the thought of a one way system - even with a list I'm rubbish at forgetting things Confused

Tigresswoods · 25/03/2020 21:19

I hope it's subsided. I've been using the small co-op the last week. There's literally no point battling around the big supermarkets.

There were fruit & veg today, even eggs!!! Still no tinned tomatoes, pasta & paracetamol but I can wait.

It was very reassuring that things were starting to calm down.

TheLinerunner · 25/03/2020 21:26

The supermarkets will restock, but so very many people can't go out and actually buy the stuff.

I got a 9-pack of loo roll for a very elderly near-neighbour today (door step handover) but I've got to start looking after my own health too.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 25/03/2020 21:33

I went early today , it was weird , I was very aware things were rationed and I felt I had to choose really carefully .
(eg, only 3 bakery items , 2 milk )
There was big gaps in the shelves still.

Hopefully everyone is being more considerate . But it's still a case of only shopping when needed and what we need not "want"

I got out before it got busy though .

Troels · 25/03/2020 21:51

@SuperlativeScrubs I thought it was really good. Much more pleasant than my normal shop in Aldi each week. I even heard some other people say to the man on the till that they should keep it like this, much more civilized and calm. Lots of smiling friendly people too.

mineofuselessinformation · 25/03/2020 22:03

It's been very interesting to watch the cycles here. First loo roll, hand wash, milk and bread.
Then, pasta, fresh foods and medicines (I kid you not, I watched people scooping handfuls of Hall's lozenges off the shelves!)
After that it was the frozen stuff and alcohol.
I started to think early on that if I didn't panic, as people stocked up on what they were worrying about, it would eventually re-appear.
So far it seems to be working for me.
I hope it carries on, but haven't been down to the supermarket since we've been in lockdown.

SnoozyLou · 25/03/2020 22:05

Not according to tesco online. Hardly any meat, no eggs, barely any milk, and no flour. What's the betting half of it ends up in the bin 🙄
