How many in supermarket at once?

I haven't been to the supermarket in a while. Are they restricting how many go in at once and how many you have in your party? My local one is Morrisons.

I will go myself if I need to but I would be faster with DD pushing the trolley and me getting what we need. Is single and slower better than double and faster? Or not? Just musing here.

My Tesco are only letting one person per family, everyone else has to wait outside.
They are also doing self distancing and only allowing a certain amount of customers in at a time.

It depends on the shop, look online to see their policies. Aldi is still limiting to 4 items I think.

SueEllenMishke · 25/03/2020 11:03

In asda everything is restricted - i tried to buy 2 bottles of red and two bottles of rose and was told I could only buy 3 bottles of wine in total.

Bloodymary · 25/03/2020 11:07

No vehicle right now, and I need my (much stronger) teenager to help me carry it home.
She can of course wait outside.

SmileyClare · 25/03/2020 11:07

LizzieM Anyone disabled or incapacitated can have a member of their household assisting. That is still inline with social distancing. Expect to be standing queuing for much longer than usual; particularly when waiting to enter the shop. I don't know if it's practical but you could consider taking a small fold up chair to sit on then fit in trolley if you're not able to stand for long periods?

we’re currently shopping at our local co-op as it isn’t as busy as supermarkets and it’s closer. they’re only allowing five people in at a time and everyone else has to queue outside - they have tape on the ground at intervals so people can spread out.

A couple of people have posted on Facebook that Sainsbury's and Asda are only letting 150 people in at a time. I've not seen any specific from either retailer tho. If it's true that very reassuring for both customers and staff.

My local shop is Morrisons too. 7-8am NHS workers. From 8am, people (already started queuing before then) are let in the shops, while some of the NHS people are still there (but it doesn't matter, I suppose). After a certain number of people are let in (Don't know how many or if they even count), they start asking others to wait for some to leave before they let in 1 more or a few more at a time (It depends on how many leaves at one time).

There are two people manning the makeshift coming in and going out doors (which were both entrance doors before), so they can deal with the numbers.

As far as I can tell, they don't bother about couples (I saw many elderly ones and some younger ones too but they still had to walk in a single file...one had the trolley and the other didn't) or two people or if you have a young child with you. Once inside the shop, they walk together and some maintain a bit of distance.

I saw a couple pushing a trolley and they had 2 children (looked about 9yrs) sat in the trolley covered with a blanket (I was hoping they could breathe). I assumed it was their idea but seeing as some shops don't allow children (ridiculous though for single parents with young kids), I'm wondering perhaps it was suggested to them.

I think it also depends on how big/small the shop is, re: The couple/2 person thing.

Thanks @SmileyClare

Been to my big Asda today, there doesn't seem to be any restrictions at all about how many are allowed in the shop. There's security people near the door but their job seem to be checking peoples bags when the alarms go off. The shop was pretty busy but much more well stocked. No toilet rolls/cleaning products, no rice, there was a little past but not many tins of branded beans unless they contained sausages. The thing is, if they aren't limiting the number of people inside then you can't keep a safe distance at all times, there only so much you can do as a shopper. I was trying to keep away from people but obviously I have no control over people that choose to walk close to me, if I'm on an Isle next to a fridge with a trolly I can't really get out of the way. They only seem to be using the distance rule at the checkout but 50 people have already brushed past you by that point. Confused

I have been out this morning. Shops in our small town seem well stocked. Very empty and everyone doing distancing. I only needed a few essentials a d combined it with my daily walk. Co op limiting things to Item of each product which was fine but have my period and needed tampons. So got one pack and went to Iceland for another.

Apolloanddaphne · 25/03/2020 15:05

I went by myself. The shop was deserted and pretty well stocked. I also popped to Marks for a few things. Hardly any people around at all. I am now stocked up and won't need to go out again for a while. If we run out of things like bananas which I don't eat, DD or DH can go out and get them.
