Is no one even a little concerned about the intrusion and removal of freedoms?

I know needs must and we're in a real crisis situation but it does make me a little uneasy to see how easy it has been to remove all freedoms.

The real shocker for me today was the text messages. I've spent the last year or so working on GDPR stuff and all the "threats" associated with that. Who gave the government all our numbers?!

I know it's insignificant in the scheme of things now but is it right that it's so easy?

No, it's for a very good reason

angell84 · 24/03/2020 21:05

I think it is good to have independent thought, and question everything that is going on.

We have been told something is happening. There could be many reasons why they want us to stay at home.

If they wanted people to stay at home - wouldn't saying there is a virus - be a great way to control people? Why else would we stay at home - unless we thought it was for our own health

Aderyn19 · 24/03/2020 21:05

Not at all concerned. Wish he'd gone further and banned travel on public transport except for essential workers and this has to be proven before access is allowed. Wish he'd also banned people from travelling outside of their area except in emergencies. We should all have to shop at our nearest supermarkets and not go further unless genuine emergency. People at second homes/caravan parks etc should be made to return to their proper homes. And this should be properly enforced.

There are too many stupid/selfish twats out there who are going to kill us.

tallah · 24/03/2020 21:06

I'm glad they can access all our numbers! They're kind of important you know

DoubleAction · 24/03/2020 21:06

OK, I get it, I got the wrong end of the stick on the text messages Grin I still think in the usual course of events they can only be used for purposes we've signed up to though.

I share some of PPs concerns. In the circumstances they had to do it, we know "they" did it for a good reason but what happens next time when there is no good reason or the reason is fabricated? How much will actually go back to normal and how much will quietly remain until some future government decides they need to use it again? How can we be sure it won't be abused?

The govt has no need to lie to us about there being a virus ffs. Not only can we see it, but no govt wants to fuck their own economy.

TooTrueToBeGood · 24/03/2020 21:07

Isn't that the point though Dragons. What other reasons might be used to explain why the people deserve to have no freedom?

This is your idea of no freedom? Seriously? And seeing as there is an undertone of conspiracy theorizing going on here, how in the hell would you suggest they got every government, major NGOs, scientists and academics to collaborate?

No.

Blink102 · 24/03/2020 21:08

There is a virus. Stop being so fucking ridiculous.

HandBellender · 24/03/2020 21:08

Yes, I am concerned about this.

I am also concerned about the way in which MN (and other social media) has turned this into a much bigger deal than it needs to be.

It's a mild illness. The economic effects will be far worse than the illness. And the mental health crisis resulting from isolation/loneliness/anxiety will be a problem for years to come.

CendrillonSings · 24/03/2020 21:08

And this is why there’s no tin foil left in the supermarkets...

angell84 · 24/03/2020 21:08

@Aderyn19 oh yes - because the Government have never lied to us before!

If you think that people at the top have your best interests at heart , I do not think so.

They are human like me and you - none of them are perfect, and many of them have been corrupt before

DoubleAction · 24/03/2020 21:09

I'm not suggesting there's a conspiracy, I'm saying what would be different if there were?

@Blink102 says who? They could literally tell us anything they want.

SoleBizzz · 24/03/2020 21:10

No of course not.

Amboseli · 24/03/2020 21:10

No, it's for a very good valid reason. Are you aware of why this has been done?!

KittenVsBox · 24/03/2020 21:10

I'd rather spend the next month(s) with the kids under my feet than having a dozen family funerals to go to.

cologne4711 · 24/03/2020 21:11

As far as the two years is concerned, they know full well it won't last 2 years. They have Brexit in mind.

I was actually very very pleasantly surprised indeed that David Davis of all people was worried about the two years and that they agreed to a review after six months.

As for people accepting loss of freedoms, they were petitioning the government to take them away!

angell84 · 24/03/2020 21:12

I am generally amazed at people who will believe absolutely anything their Government tells them - when that Government had treated them badly many, many times before.

I suppose English people go along with thinking that the Royal family are somehow better than them aswell.

There is a very "follow the leader and do what he says" style in England.

No independent thought.

Well, we will see

cologne4711 · 24/03/2020 21:12

I agree. Sadly though it's not a mild illness for many people and the strain on the health service simply isn't tenable, even for a Tory government.

spacewitch99 · 24/03/2020 21:12

If it takes this to save lives, then so be it. In my opinion - we should be doing what is being done in Spain, Italy, France etc etc

zombieapocalypseisnigh · 24/03/2020 21:12

No. All the EU countries are doing the right thing, including ours. We all just need to get through it.

Shopgirl1 · 24/03/2020 21:12

Yes, I’m concerned about it.

I’m not a Trump fan, but I do agree with what he has said about not letting the cure be worse than the disease.

They reacted too slowly to this in Governments everywhere. I’ve been listening and reading about it non stop since January. Borders should have been closed weeks ago. They are continuing to let people in and now it is too late anyway and the only option left is to put these draconian measures in place and let the general public suffer.
