Is no one even a little concerned about the intrusion and removal of freedoms?

I know needs must and we're in a real crisis situation but it does make me a little uneasy to see how easy it has been to remove all freedoms.

The real shocker for me today was the text messages. I've spent the last year or so working on GDPR stuff and all the "threats" associated with that. Who gave the government all our numbers?!

I know it's insignificant in the scheme of things now but is it right that it's so easy?

angell84 I think you would get a better reception on youtube. Search corona virus, conspiracy and 5G. That should get you started. :)

Flixsfoilball · 24/03/2020 22:51

You should read this article by the NY Times about why South Korea was so successful in curbing the virus without the massive economic hit that a lockdown entails. Part of the reason was the public's willingness to give up some of their liberties for a much greater, more important cause. I'd take a text message over job losses and economic meltdown any day!

Sadly we have a lot of entitled selfish fuckwits in this Country, we should have done more sooner

angell84 · 24/03/2020 22:52

@LastTrainEast I am quite happy here, thank you very much.

Okay, leaving alone the conspiracy theories.

I think that the control has been incredibly extreme

mochajoes · 24/03/2020 22:53

what is that conspiracy theory? I've heard the one about killing off the elderly but clearly we are not doing that otherwise we wouldn't have shut down the economy.

angell84 · 24/03/2020 22:54

3 deaths in Ireland.

Less deaths than from nearly everything else.

And yet we will be on lockdown for five weeks.

It does not make sense

SidekickSally · 24/03/2020 22:55

No, most understand why they’ve been asked to limit their freedom and don’t question it. In fact a lot are asking why didn’t it happen sooner.

Leflic · 24/03/2020 22:56

I don’t gave a phone. I gave an iPad for messaging on social media and email.

It’s intrusive as you allow it.

angell84 · 24/03/2020 22:57

@mochajoes there is loads! Loads of different ideas that we obviously can't prove one way or another. But it all boils down to:

Lots of people think that there is something going on, that we are not being told.

I got this online:
"Although there are many Coronavirus conspiracy theories, the belief that powers are pursuing a secret plan is widespread"

BeijingBikini · 24/03/2020 22:57

If someone is vulnerable and scared of catching it, they should isolate. Take responsibility for your own health. Why get angry about someone else taking a walk? Of course someone else that doesn't know you probably won't care about you, just like you probably don't care about kids with malaria, or cholera, or the 6 year olds that mine cobalt for electric cars. People that have happily bought cheap clothing and not given a shit about a lot of others suffering worldwide are now suddenly expecting everyone to care about them to the point of house arrest....

AutumnRose1 · 24/03/2020 22:57

Yes, OP, very worried

Though the text didn’t worry me! But generally yes, I think it’s alarming how fast they could do this and if they go further, I’ll be really worried.

What happened to herd immunity? It got pulled off the table very fast indeed.

AutumnRose1 · 24/03/2020 22:58

BejingBikini excellent post.

resipsa · 24/03/2020 23:01

*Yes I am OP. This lockdown may well be merited due to the severity of the situation but I’m amazed there hasn’t been more public questioning of quickly how our liberties have been stripped from us, or of how long we are willing to sacrifice them for.

I’m not so bothered by the text messages and don’t think our government has sinister motives in this case, but it’s an interesting study in how authoritarianism feeds on fear. I’m sure some of the world’s less scrupulous governments are taking note.*

I agree ☝️. No one else I have spoken to in real life thinks the same, however. When we know how the doctor who sought to share the problem with the works was treated, it's concerning how quickly our collective mindset can be affected.

alloutoffucks · 24/03/2020 23:02

Herd immunity was Cummings idea. It got pulled off the table once multiple scientists said he was talking bollocks. They are now pretending herd immunity was never discussed.

Inkpaperstars · 24/03/2020 23:05

If someone is vulnerable and scared of catching it, they should isolate

Ok, but who will pay them? How will they get food? What if all medics, all the people who keep the water and the electrics on, all the transport workers, all the teachers, all the supermarket workers etc etc decided to isolate? How so things work? Believe me they are all vulnerable, if you think this is something that only hospitalises and kills the old or frail you are in for a shock.

alloutoffucks · 24/03/2020 23:06

OP I support drastic measures to tackle this crises. But yes democracy can be over turned very quickly which many people do not realise. And I am worried we will have a fight on our hands to get these protections back.

CoffeeHere · 24/03/2020 23:09

No.

VirtualHugsAllRound · 24/03/2020 23:10

I thought the new laws were time limited? I'm sure I read somewhere it was two years but reviewed every 6 months.

Mind you, now I've written that, even that sounds chilling.

AutumnRose1 · 24/03/2020 23:10

Re Cummings and herd immunity

I mostly read about it from science, didn’t think Cummings view had any medical validity

Interesting read here

Six months!

Wilmalovescake · 24/03/2020 23:15

I tell you what really screws up your liberty:

Pneumonia
Lung scarring
Brain damage from oxygen deprivation
Death.

Fuxake.

Hippydoodledoo8 · 24/03/2020 23:17

Agree with a PP about being more protected. I had terrible anxiety about it all yesterday and breathed a sigh of relief when Boris announced lockdown. I immediately felt safer.

I can’t believe there are posters on this thread complaining about it! Do you really want the alternative? Do you know what you’d be asking for? It beggars belief!

Backtothenewme · 24/03/2020 23:17

I am concerned with how easily and quickly new restrictions were legislated. I am compliant but feel vulnerable to state control on such a significant level. Liberty lost

PapsofJura · 24/03/2020 23:19

This thread has reminded me that I need to get some tin foil when out on my essential shopping trip!

AutumnRose1 · 24/03/2020 23:20

“ Do you really want the alternative? Do you know what you’d be asking for?”

Yes and yes.

There was a great thread earlier which sadly MN took down, but it really saved my state of mind tonight so if the poster who started it is reading this - thank you.
