I've been to Aldi (won't need to go back til Friday now, possibly longer).

Everyone had to queue to get in, at least 6ft apart. Security guard was letting one person in as one came out (only single shoppers allowed, no children/couples etc). I had to wait quite a long time as you'd expect, which was of course fine and actually reassuring. The mood in the queue was quite sombre and low key but everyone was friendly and understanding of the measures. A couple of arses tried to skip the queue and took offence when told to get to the back of it though. Guard was letting older/disabled people to the front of the queue.

Inside the shelves were well stocked - no dried pasta or toilet roll but everything else. Scored my first tinned tomatoes in weeks. Fruit and veg fully stocked. And wine! Thank goodness Wine

There were only about 30 customers in what's quite a large store so it was actually all very relaxed. Everyone observing social distancing and no panic buying or anything silly. All in all v impressive.

What are the supermarkets like where you are?

I don't know really, last time I went it was mayhem so did not attempt again, shopped in my local shop and it had not much, but got some bread and sausages and other little bits to cook up a meal. DP venturing at some point of the weekend...

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 24/03/2020 17:25

I haven’t been near any shops for a few days and hope to be able to totally isolate for the next 12 weeks. I will be asking anyone who has offered to help (been very lucky as I have some wonderful friends and clients) to throw a loaf into a box on the drive every now and again, but only if they’re already out as it’s not essential. I’m addicted to bread, but may have to get over it. 😭

RadioRodeo · 24/03/2020 17:28

I hope I won't need to visit a supermarket for at least 10 days.

I have run out of tonic but I know it's not essential

PlomBear · 24/03/2020 17:29

Big Sainsbury was really quiet. Got bread, hand-wash, cheese, bacon and Easter eggs. There was little fresh meat - no pork joints or chicken at all.

Meredithgrey1 · 24/03/2020 17:30

What were Aldi doing about children too young to be left alone?

Figgygal · 24/03/2020 17:30

My husband went to our local co-op today
Came home with meat milk fresh bread and toilet roll
All very civilised I understand

emmathedilemma · 24/03/2020 17:31

Went to Sainsburys at lunchtime having not done a food shop other than a couple of bits I picked up on foot since a week last Friday and was pleasantly surprised. Made a list - mostly meat, fish and veg - and got everything I wanted which will keep me going for at least a week, probably 10 days if I use stuff in the freezer.
Don’t think they had any loo rolls or pasta and the alcohol section was almost bare but you could get enough to make meals. I didn’t really browse, just went in, got what I needed and left ASAP!

Lllot5 · 24/03/2020 17:31

Lidl was ok near me. Plenty of fruit veg salad. They had cheese eggs milk yoghurt no pasta not many tins. But people were being sensible didn’t see any one over loading.

Chista · 24/03/2020 17:31

I went to our big local Sainsburys, no queues to get in, shelves generally stocked well, no mayhem whatsoever. People going about their own business, being polite, no panic buying, queue at tills minimal and people keeping a good distance. Stark comparison to last week when I went where it was total bedlam

TheWayOfTheWorld · 24/03/2020 17:32

My husband is a key worker (doctor) and working all hours already. I have two DC that I can't leave alone - how am I meant to get any shopping if I can't bring them with me?

PicsInRed · 24/03/2020 17:33

What are people with dependant children supposed to do?

AshenQueen · 24/03/2020 17:33

DP went to co-op, got stopped by the police. There was tape on the floor to show where to stand. Hardly any food but he did manage to get a few things including toilet roll!

Emeeno1 · 24/03/2020 17:33

Visited Aldi this afternoon. Very quiet, fully stocked apart from flour and oats. Lots of everything, even loo roll.

UncomfortableSilence · 24/03/2020 17:35

Went to Sainsbury’s after work ( work in a school before I get lynched) very quiet, floor was all marked with the correct distance to stand, you had to wait for the person in front to finish completely then load the belt from the end then walk to the other end to limit contact.

Little fresh meat, no cleaning products, no pasta and tins, small amount of toilet roll and hand soap. Got most of what I need so hopefully won't have to go for a week now.

thequeenbeyondthewall · 24/03/2020 17:35

I went to Asda. I had to go round a cordon type thing to go in but there was no queuing it was pretty quiet.

They had everything except eggs.

It was just horrible though. No one was speaking. No please or thank you when letting people past etc.

sanityisamyth · 24/03/2020 17:36

Went to Asda today. Was lovely. Very few people there. Even a fellow shopper said how quiet it was. Most of what I needed was there, including loo roll and pasta. Was also shopping for a vulnerable neighbour so we had two trollies (my DS was pushing their trolley) and the staff were really helpful.

Nsmum14 · 24/03/2020 17:38

Things seem to be calming down here too. Pretty quiet in tesco and they had everything I needed. Maybe people have realised there is no need to stockpile, maybe people already have stuffed fridges, freezers and cupboards.

defthand · 24/03/2020 17:39

Is self-checkout disabled?

Blackopal · 24/03/2020 17:40

That's interesting, I haven't been shopping since all of this started as managed to get deliveries.

Concerned about no children rule. Single mother with two young children. When I inevitably need to shop they will have to come?

ErrolTheDragon · 24/03/2020 17:41

Local businesses who normally supply pubs etc are trying to get deliveries going. Yesterday we got a veg box, with milk and eggs and he can do bread too.

Today DH ordered £50 of meat - the minimum order.

And some soap and hand gel.

I went to Aldi at lunchtime. Staff member outside asking you to read guidance stuck on the window before entering. Hardly anyone in there, fully stocked other than baking items and toilet roll

Extra tolls open so no one queuing. It was lovely!!

Cinammoncake · 24/03/2020 17:44

Can I ask whether people in supermarkets were generally queueing close together or spaced apart? and did people have masks or gloves on or things like that? (just out of interest, not judging, just wondering what to expect) thanks

thequeenbeyondthewall · 24/03/2020 17:49

Queuing far apart and I didn't see face masks or gloves on anyone.

Cinammoncake · 24/03/2020 17:50

Thanks thequeenbeyondthewall

Talulahbeige · 24/03/2020 17:52

Morrison’s today. Queued to get in, 6ft apparat, it was one in one out.
Quite a few people inside but not overly busy.
Fruit, veg, milk, bread was plentiful. Most of their bakery bread was reduced.
Lots of empty shelves for stuff like pasta, tins, flour etc.
No queue for checkouts.
Quite a pleasant experience.

I felt sorry (not really) for the man who asked why there was a queue outside, all he wanted was a packet of fags!
